That makes it a practical alternative to buying a separate TV for some students—but USB-C alone does not guarantee video or charging, and the monitor’s wattage must suit your laptop.
Why a monitor may make more sense for a dorm desk
A monitor can serve as the larger screen for laptop work and compatible video playback, so one display may cover more than one desk use. That is a space-planning argument, not a proven promise of savings: there is no cited comparison establishing that monitors universally take less room or cost less than TVs, and dorm desks vary.

Think of this as choosing a desk display, not automatically replacing every TV function. If you want a screen for laptop-based viewing, check that your intended devices and services work with the monitor setup.
What USB-C and Power Delivery actually do
On a compatible setup, one USB-C cable can carry video from a laptop to a monitor while the monitor supplies power to the laptop. LG USA Support describes USB-C Power Delivery as enabling a monitor to power on and charge a connected laptop at the same time in supported setups; both devices still need the relevant capabilities. The USB-C connector shape by itself is not enough to establish compatibility. Verify that the laptop’s specific USB-C port supports video output and charging, and that the monitor’s USB-C port supports video input and Power Delivery output. BenQ’s USB-C charging FAQ, dated January 2, 2026, also advises checking device specifications and the cable if charging does not work.
Choose charging power for your laptop, not a slogan
Monitor charging output is measured in watts, and there is no single wattage that is right for every laptop. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guidance suggests at least 65W for many smaller laptops and considering 90W or more for future higher-demand machines. Treat that as a starting point, then check the power requirement for your own laptop and whether it can charge over USB-C.

For a concrete example, Samsung’s Canadian business product page lists its LS24A400UJNXZA as a 24-inch monitor with 65W USB-C charging. That specification is a product example, not evidence that 65W is enough for every laptop or a hands-on recommendation. Check these details before you buy
- Confirm video from the laptop. Look up the exact laptop model and port specifications; make sure the USB-C port you plan to use supports display output.
- Confirm monitor input and charging output. The monitor must accept video over USB-C and provide Power Delivery if you want the one-cable setup. Note its maximum output in watts.
- Match the power to the laptop. Compare the monitor’s USB-C output with the laptop maker’s charging requirements. A lower output may not meet the laptop’s needs, even if video works.
- Check the cable and any adapter requirements. Use a cable and adapter rated for the features and power involved. If charging fails, check the cable and both devices’ specifications before assuming the monitor is defective.
- Measure the desk and check placement. Consider the display’s dimensions, stand footprint, and whether the desk can support any monitor arm you might want to use. Do not assume a dorm desk is compatible with a particular mount.
When a portable USB-C monitor is the better fit
A portable monitor is a separate option if portability or a second display matters more than a full-size desk screen. ASUS describes its 16-inch ZenScreen OLED MQ16FC as supporting USB-C video and power input, along with power pass-through. The product page says an adapter of up to 90W is needed for maximum 65W laptop delivery, so the adapter’s capacity matters to that setup. It is not the same form factor as a fixed desk monitor. Make the call based on your setup
For a laptop-centered dorm desk, prioritize a monitor with USB-C video and enough Power Delivery for your computer. Before paying for the convenience of one cable, confirm the laptop port, monitor output, cable, and physical fit. If your laptop cannot send video over USB-C or the monitor cannot supply the power it needs, the advertised connector will not deliver the setup you want.
