A New York woman identified as Ella, or @ellainnyc, says a television, two bottles of scotch and her ID were missing after a move, while items and trash remained in her apartment. The account comes from a report by The Nerd Stash published October 2, 2026; it does not independently establish what happened to the belongings or whether anyone stole them.
What Ella says happened
The Nerd Stash reported that Ella posted a video introduced with the words, “HOW PIECE OF CAKE MOVING LEFT MY APARTMENT:” The video showed items and mess left behind, according to the report. In comments, she wrote: “A TV, 2 bottles of scotch, and my ID are mysteriously missing.”

The report identifies the mover as Piece of Cake Moving & Storage and says Ella later reported that the company offered a refund and to return to pack the remaining items. It does not establish whether that offer was completed, whether she filed a formal claim, or how the dispute ended. The reported missing items are her allegation, not an independently verified finding of theft.

Start by sending the moving company a written loss-or-damage claim as soon as possible. New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) guidance says a mover must acknowledge a written claim within 30 days and resolve it within 120 days. Keep a copy of the claim and proof that you sent it. These deadlines describe the state guidance for moves wholly within New York; check the rules and complaint route that apply to your move.

Gather documents and item details
- Keep the estimate or order for service, bill of lading, inventory, payment records, and all written communication with the mover.
- Make a separate list of each missing or damaged item, with a clear description and any available proof of ownership or value.
- Save photographs of the condition of the apartment and belongings, if available. Records help document a claim but do not by themselves prove what happened or guarantee reimbursement.
- Review the move documents for valuation or coverage limits. The New York Attorney General advises consumers to understand those terms, and to list valuable articles separately when appropriate.
- Where possible, note missing items or apparent damage on the final bill of lading, then submit the written claim promptly.
NYSDOT’s consumer guidance says: “If you suffered loss or damage as a result of your move, notify your moving company in writing as soon as possible.”
Which New York complaint route applies?
A claim to the mover, an agency complaint, and court action serve different purposes. The right agency also depends on whether the move stayed within New York or crossed state lines.

Confirm whether the move was intrastate or interstate before choosing an agency. For an in-state loss or damage claim, an agency complaint is not a substitute for submitting the written claim to the mover.
