A 2026 laboratory study reports a way to freeze red blood cells without glycerol, using a short peptide motif derived from a tardigrade protein together with the sugar trehalose. In the authors’ tests, the method recovered 89.0 ± 0.6% of cells after thawing. That is a promising result for an experimental cryopreservation method, but the work so far covers isolated cells and anemic mice. It does not show that hospitals or blood banks can use the method on people.
What the study reports
The headline figures come from the study authors and from a news release issued by the American Chemical Society (ACS) on October 8, 2026. Each one carries a condition that matters when you read it.

| Measure | Reported value | Who reported it and under what conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Post-thaw red blood cell recovery, experimental formulation | 89.0 ± 0.6% | Study authors, 2026; laboratory measurement on cells frozen with the CAHS-derived motif and trehalose |
| Blood compatibility, experimental formulation | 99.0 ± 0.7% | Study authors, 2026; the assay behind this figure is not described in the coverage used for this article |
| Post-thaw recovery, conventional glycerol freezing (comparison) | About 82% | ACS news release, October 8, 2026; comparison as described in that release, not a new head-to-head test in this article |
These numbers describe what happened in the study’s experiments. They are not a guarantee of how the cells would behave in routine blood-bank storage, which involves different volumes, handling, transport and quality-control rules.
How the method works
The tardigrade contribution is a conserved, shorter fragment derived from CAHS proteins, the protein family that full-length tardigrade proteins belong to. The researchers used this short motif rather than the full-length proteins. The motif is combined with trehalose, a sugar that some organisms use to tolerate drying and cold.

According to the published abstract, red blood cells were co-incubated with the motif and trehalose at 4 °C before freezing. The authors propose two effects that would explain the protection:
- Greater intracellular trehalose accumulation. More trehalose inside the cell may help stabilize it during freezing.
- Suppression of ice-associated damage. The formulation is proposed to reduce harm caused by ice formation.
These are the authors’ proposed mechanisms. The sources used here describe them, but do not establish them as proven in every detail.

Why removing glycerol matters
Glycerol is the standard cryoprotectant for freezing red blood cells at high concentration. Before a glycerol-frozen unit can be transfused, the glycerol has to be removed in a process called deglycerolization. The published abstract describes this step as laborious and says it can cause hemolysis, meaning the rupture of red blood cells.
The experimental approach aims to avoid that problem. According to the ACS release, the motif and trehalose can be washed away after thawing by centrifugation. This is the reported experimental workflow. It has not been validated as a clinical procedure.

What was tested
The study includes two kinds of evidence.
Laboratory measurements on thawed cells
The work reports in vitro measurements on post-thaw red blood cells, including cell morphology, cell volume and functional activity. These tests show how the cells looked and behaved after freezing and thawing in the lab.
Transfusion into anemic mice
The ACS release also describes transfusing frozen, thawed and washed cells into anemic mice. Blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels improved, and the release states that no inflammatory response was detected. This is animal evidence. It is encouraging for the biology, but mouse blood physiology and human transfusion medicine are different, and the study does not stand in for a human trial.

- Effectiveness in patients. Mouse hemoglobin and cell-count improvements do not show clinical benefit in people.
- Blood-bank readiness. Nothing in the reporting shows that transfusion services can adopt the method, or what regulatory pathway it would need.
- Cost and operations. The reporting does not address cost, staffing or throughput at blood-bank scale.
- Long-term storage at scale. The reported recovery figures come from the study’s conditions; storage performance over long periods and in large volumes is not reported.
In short, the study answers a laboratory question: can a tardigrade-derived motif with trehalose protect red blood cells through freezing without glycerol? It does not answer the clinical question of whether patients can safely receive those cells.

Background on tardigrades
Tardigrades, also called water bears, are microscopic animals known for surviving extreme drying, freezing and radiation. The National Science Foundation published a 2022 explainer on research into trehalose and tardigrade proteins in desiccation tolerance. That work supplies the biological inspiration for this study, but it is not evidence that the approach works for human blood.
Reading the glycerol comparison
The fair way to compare the two approaches is on the axes the study itself addresses:
| Axis | Glycerol-based freezing (conventional) | Glycerol-free motif and trehalose (experimental) |
|---|---|---|
| Post-thaw recovery | About 82%, per the ACS release | 89.0 ± 0.6%, per the study authors |
| Blood compatibility | Not stated in the sources used here | 99.0 ± 0.7%, per the study authors |
| Removing the cryoprotectant before transfusion | Deglycerolization, described in the abstract as laborious and a cause of hemolysis | Washing away the motif and trehalose by centrifugation, as reported experimentally |
| Evidence level | Established clinical practice | Laboratory measurements and an animal model; no human clinical trial reported |
| Cost and blood-bank scale | Not stated in the sources used here | Not stated in the sources used here |
The recovery comparison is the most direct one in the reporting, but it compares figures from different settings. It should be read as a reason for further testing, not as proof that the experimental method is superior in practice.

- The study concerns red blood cells, not whole blood in general.
- The method combines a tardigrade-derived CAHS motif with trehalose and skips glycerol.
- The reported post-thaw recovery is 89.0 ± 0.6%, compared with about 82% for glycerol freezing as cited by the ACS.
- The animal results are from anemic mice, and no human trial is reported.
Quoted from the study team
Leming Sun, one of the corresponding authors, said: “This study was our first attempt to translate a lesson from an extraordinarily resilient organism into a practical cell-preservation strategy.” The phrase “first attempt” is a useful reminder that this is an early step in the development process.
