On 22 December 1938, a fishing trawler brought an unusual fish ashore in South Africa. East London Museum curator Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer recognized its vivid blue coloring and fleshy, lobed fins as something extraordinary. The fish was a coelacanth: a living member of a group then known only from fossils, whose youngest known fossil was about 66 million years old.
What is a coelacanth?
A coelacanth is a large lobe-finned fish. Unlike the thin, ray-supported fins of most familiar fish, its paired fins have fleshy bases and internal bones. The 1938 specimen’s unusual fins and appearance prompted Courtenay-Latimer to seek an expert identification.

There are two known living species: the African coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, and the Indonesian coelacanth, Latimeria menadoensis. The African species occurs in the western Indian Ocean; the Indonesian species is found in Indonesian waters. Scientists continue to discuss the coelacanth’s exact position in the evolutionary tree. Coelacanths are not direct human ancestors, and they are not the closest living relatives of land vertebrates; lungfish hold that distinction. Smithsonian Ocean explains the coelacanth’s anatomy, species and evolutionary context.
“Living fossil” is a familiar shorthand for an animal from an ancient lineage that survives today, but it can give the wrong impression. The modern coelacanth is a living species, not a fossil species brought back unchanged. The phrase also does not mean that its evolution stopped.

Why was the coelacanth thought to be extinct?
Before 1938, coelacanths were known to science through fossils, and no younger fossils were known. Smithsonian Ocean describes the group as having been thought extinct for approximately 65 million years. The Natural History Museum in London gives the youngest known fossil’s age as about 66 million years, while its account also uses a broader estimate of about 70 million years for the apparent disappearance.
Those figures are rounded descriptions of the fossil record, not a precise date when every coelacanth died out. They also do not describe the age of the 1938 fish. The specimen was a recently caught animal from a living population; the gap was between the youngest known fossils and its rediscovery.

How was the coelacanth rediscovered?
Courtenay-Latimer recognized an unusual catch
On 22 December 1938, Courtenay-Latimer was looking over fish from a trawler catch at the East London docks in South Africa. She noticed a striking blue fish with fleshy fins and took it to the museum. Unable to identify it, she made a sketch and contacted ichthyologist J. L. B. Smith.

Smith confirmed its identity
Smith examined the specimen in February 1939 and recognized it as a coelacanth. He named the species Latimeria chalumnae: Latimeria honored Courtenay-Latimer, and chalumnae referred to the nearby Chalumna River area. Courtenay-Latimer made the discovery; Smith supplied the scientific identification and name.

Smith later recalled his first look at the fish in his 1956 book Old Fourlegs: “I stood as if stricken to stone. Yes, there was not a shadow of a doubt, scale by scale, bone by bone, fin by fin, it was a true Coelacanth.” The Natural History Museum reproduces the recollection and details the discovery in its account of the coelacanth that ‘outdid’ the Loch Ness Monster.
Was 1938 the first time people had seen a coelacanth?
No. The discovery was a rediscovery for Western science, not the first human encounter with the fish. The Natural History Museum notes that Comorian fishers knew it as gombessa and caught coelacanths during night fishing before the South African specimen entered the scientific record. Recognizing that distinction gives the story its full context: scientific knowledge arrived later than local knowledge.

Where do coelacanths live today?
The 1938 catch came from South African waters, and a documented population was later found near the Comoros. Coelacanths are now known from western Indian Ocean waters as well as Indonesia. Indonesian captures documented in 1997 and 1998 led to the description of the second living species, Latimeria menadoensis, in 1999.
The two species should not be treated as interchangeable in claims about range or conservation. NOAA’s material, for example, addresses the African coelacanth and a distinct population segment in Tanzania, rather than establishing identical status for every coelacanth population. NOAA describes that Tanzanian segment as likely small and identifies bycatch and habitat destruction as threats. It also reports CITES Appendix I protection for the African coelacanth throughout its range. See NOAA Fisheries’ African coelacanth resources for its species and protection details.

What the discovery changed—and what it did not
The coelacanth’s survival showed that the absence of young fossils did not prove that the group had vanished everywhere. It did not prove that a fossil species had returned, that coelacanths had remained unchanged, or that they were a missing link between fish and humans. The discovery instead connected a living fish to a lineage that had previously been known to scientists from fossils.
The fish’s blue appearance helped make the catch memorable, but color descriptions depend on lighting and context. NOAA describes the African coelacanth as brown with pale blotches under natural light, so the vivid blue reported for the 1938 specimen should not be taken as a universal appearance in every setting. The Australian Museum provides further background on the African coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae.
