A Hebrew University of Jerusalem experiment shows that one superconducting vortex can hold a classical bit while switching at roughly five times Landauer’s theoretical minimum energy. The device is a laboratory proof of principle at about 4 kelvin, not a room-temperature memory replacement.

What the “magnetic whirlpool” actually is

The whirlpool is a superconducting vortex: a tiny, quantized circulation of magnetic field that forms inside a superconductor when it is cooled and placed under suitable magnetic conditions. In the Hebrew University experiment, researchers confined one vortex to two stable positions. One position represented binary 0 and the other represented binary 1.

That makes the device a one-bit memory element. The information is encoded in the vortex’s location, rather than in the charge stored in a conventional transistor or the orientation of a magnetic layer.

The underlying study, “Approaching Landauer’s limit in a single superconducting vortex memory bit,” was published in Nature Communications in 2026. Read the paper and DOI record.

How the vortex stores and switches a bit

Two positions provide the binary states

The experiment creates a double-well-like situation in which the vortex can remain in either of two energetically stable locations. Moving it from one location to the other changes the stored bit. Because the object is a single vortex, the experiment isolates the energy associated with one microscopic memory operation rather than averaging over a large array.

A SQUID-on-tip microscope detects the motion

A vortex is too small and delicate to monitor with ordinary magnetic probes. The team used an ultrasensitive SQUID-on-tip microscope to track the vortex’s magnetic response. From the response during motion, the researchers inferred the very small amount of energy dissipated during switching.

Co-lead researcher Nofar Fridman described measuring that dissipation as a major challenge because “a vortex is an exceptionally small and delicate object.” Study leader Yonathan Anahory said the measured operation ran at approximately five times Landauer’s limit.

How close is it to Landauer’s limit?

Landauer’s limit is the minimum energy that physics requires, in principle, to erase one bit of information at a specified temperature. It is a thermodynamic floor, not the typical energy consumption of a commercial memory chip. The vortex experiment measured a switching cost of approximately five times that limit.

The university’s release places the result in context by saying that a modern computer uses more than a million times more energy for a comparable operation. That is the release’s contextual comparison, not a universal benchmark for every processor, memory technology or workload.

Being within a small multiple of the limit is significant because it leaves little room for improvement through ordinary efficiency tweaks: further gains would require reducing losses in the vortex motion, its control fields and the measurement or read-write circuitry around it.

Why the device must be cooled to about 4 kelvin

The prototype operates at approximately 4 kelvin—about −269 °C or −452 °F. At that temperature, the material can sustain superconductivity, allowing a well-defined vortex to exist and move with extremely low dissipation.

This requirement is the central practical limitation. A 4 K memory element needs a cryogenic system, thermal shielding and wiring designed to function between room temperature and the cold stage. The energy used by that supporting refrigeration system is not the same as the energy dissipated in the vortex switch, so the five-times-Landauer figure should not be interpreted as the total wall-plug energy of a complete computer.

Could it be useful in quantum computers?

The most plausible near-term setting is specialized cryogenic electronics, including systems built next to quantum-computing hardware. Many quantum processors already operate at temperatures near 4 K or below, reducing the temperature mismatch between the memory element and its environment.

That is a proposed future use, not a demonstrated product. The experiment shows one controllable bit under laboratory conditions; it does not show a memory array, a manufacturable addressing scheme, long-term data retention in a system, or a complete cryogenic computer built from these elements.

Is superconducting-vortex memory practical yet?

No. The result is explicitly a proof of principle, and the researchers say more work is needed before scaling to practical memory devices. Important engineering questions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How many vortices can be placed in a dense, repeatable array without unwanted interactions?
  • How can individual bits be written and read quickly while preserving the two stable states?
  • Can fabrication tolerances produce identical switching behavior across a large device?
  • How will control and readout wiring be integrated without adding losses that overwhelm the vortex’s thermodynamic advantage?
  • Will the state remain reliable when the device is operated repeatedly in a real cryogenic system?

Until those questions are answered, the result should be viewed as a measurement of an exceptionally efficient physical switching mechanism, not as evidence that consumer computers are about to adopt vortex memory.

How it differs from skyrmion memory

A superconducting vortex is not a magnetic skyrmion. Both can look like nanoscale whirlpools in simplified illustrations, but they are different physical objects and belong to different device platforms.

Approach Information carrier Demonstrated setting What the reported result establishes
Superconducting-vortex memory Position of a single vortex in a superconductor Approximately 4 K One-bit operation measured at approximately five times Landauer’s limit; laboratory proof of principle
Skyrmion memory Magnetic skyrmion in a magnetic device 2024 magnetic-tunnel-junction result A separate magnetic-device approach; it is not the superconducting-vortex experiment described here

The distinction matters when comparing energy, read/write methods, stable states and scaling. Results from the 2024 skyrmion magnetic-tunnel-junction work should not be merged with the 2026 superconducting-vortex measurement.

What this result means

The experiment demonstrates that a single superconducting vortex can function as a classical bit and switch at an energy remarkably close to the thermodynamic minimum. Its immediate importance is scientific: it gives researchers a way to study near-limit information processing in a controlled cryogenic system.

Its practical meaning is narrower. The bit currently requires 4 K refrigeration and has only been demonstrated individually. For now, superconducting-vortex memory is best understood as a promising research direction for cryogenic and quantum-computing hardware rather than an alternative to everyday computer memory.
