Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that a three-year-old tigress identified as T138 was brought from Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve and released into the core zone of Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal. The outlet described the event as the state’s first tiger reintroduction and said it ended an eight-year absence. Those are the report’s characterizations; the article does not provide an official release record or a detailed population series.
Has the tiger returned to Buxa?
A tigress has been released in Buxa, but the release alone does not establish that the reserve has a resident tiger population again or that its population has recovered. Hindustan Times reported that T138 was released into the reserve’s core zone on October 2, 2026, in the presence of Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The report called it West Bengal’s first tiger reintroduction and framed it as the end of an eight-year absence. It does not publish the records needed to independently establish that history or show a post-release population trend. A successful conservation outcome will depend on what monitoring finds about the tigress’s health, movements, adaptation and behaviour.

Why had Buxa not had tigers for eight years?
An unnamed official cited by Hindustan Times attributed the decline to habitat degradation and fragmentation, land-use changes and declining prey availability. The report also says experts believed Buxa’s tigers had moved to Manas. These are explanations attributed to sources in the article, not a definitive account of a single cause.
The same report says Buxa is contiguous with Bhutan’s Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary and Assam’s Manas National Park, forming an international wildlife corridor. It also says Buxa was created in 1983. The article does not include underlying records to assess how tiger movements across this landscape relate to the reported absence.

What signs of tiger presence had been reported before the release?
Hindustan Times says camera traps recorded tigers in Buxa in 2021, 2023 and 2026. It reports that the tiger photographed in 2023 was matched with one from Manas Tiger Reserve. These are reported detections, not a population estimate or proof of a resident breeding population; the article does not link to the monitoring data behind them.

How will the tigress be tracked?
According to Hindustan Times, the planned monitoring uses telemetry, camera trapping and field observation to track T138’s movement, adaptation, health and behaviour. The report describes these as methods for following the animal; it does not report findings from that monitoring or say that she has established a territory.
Are more tigers being released in Buxa?
Adhikari told Hindustan Times that three more tigers “will be released in the BTR in the next two months.” That is an announced plan as of the October 2, 2026 report, not confirmation that the releases have happened.

The report describes a proposal to identify land; it does not establish that the project has been approved or built. This is a separate development from T138’s release.
