The claim that scientists found a strange chemical signal in dinosaur teeth—and traced it to the deep sea—cannot be confirmed from the available evidence. The study behind the headline has not been identified, so the signal, its proposed origin, and the researchers’ reasoning remain unknown.
What is known about the dinosaur-teeth claim?
No primary study or reliable original report matching the claim has been identified. Without a source naming the researchers and describing their samples and methods, it is not possible to say what the chemical signal was or why a deep-sea origin was proposed. The headline should therefore be treated as unverified, not as an established scientific finding.

What deep-sea fossil result might be confused with it?
A 2023 study examined rare-earth elements in conodont fossils—small, tooth-like structures from extinct marine animals—found in Triassic deep-sea pelagic rocks. The authors reported that the fossils’ rare-earth-element signatures were acquired from surrounding siliceous material during diagenesis, the chemical and physical changes that occur as sediment becomes rock. The study concerns conodonts, not dinosaurs; it cannot verify the dinosaur-teeth headline.

Fossil chemistry can reflect more than an animal’s original biology. After burial, minerals and other substances in surrounding sediment may alter or contribute to a fossil’s chemical signature. The conodont example shows why researchers need to distinguish a fossil’s original composition from changes acquired during preservation. It does not establish that dinosaur teeth experienced the same process or that a particular dinosaur-tooth signal came from the deep sea.

What can chemical imaging tell us—and what can’t it establish alone?
Chemical imaging methods can map compounds and help characterize preservation, trace elements, isotopes, and biomarkers in fossils. But methods have limits, and the resulting maps or measurements require careful interpretation. A review of chemical imaging in paleontology discusses these techniques and their methodological constraints; it offers general context, not evidence for the unidentified dinosaur-tooth study. Read the review.
Is there another tooth study that explains the headline?
A separate 2020 study used modern and fossil shark teeth to investigate seawater calcium-isotope composition and strontium across geological time. Shark teeth are from marine vertebrates, not dinosaurs, and that study is not evidence for the claim about dinosaur teeth. See the shark-tooth study.

What would verify the deep-sea explanation?
A credible account needs to identify the original paper or a reliable report that describes it. In particular, readers need to know which dinosaur teeth were analyzed, what chemical signal was measured, how the samples were tested, and what evidence links the signal to a deep-sea setting. The source should also explain how the authors considered alternatives such as post-burial alteration or contamination, if those possibilities were examined. Until those details are available, neither the signal nor its proposed origin can be responsibly described as a finding.
