Galway GAA chairperson Paul Bellew paid tribute to him as “a stalwart of Galway hurling and Kiltormer” and “a man of firsts.”
Galway’s 1972 breakthrough
Fenton played centre-forward when Galway beat Dublin 2-9 to 1-10 in the 1972 All-Ireland under-21 final, according to GalwayBayFM and the Irish Examiner. The Irish Examiner described it as Galway’s first underage All-Ireland title.
Recalling the achievement in Game of My Life – Galway, as quoted by the Irish Examiner, Fenton said: “After the final whistle it didn’t take us long to realise how special that win actually was because we were the first team to bring back an All-Ireland hurling title to Galway in nearly 50 years.” He also joked about the years since the final: “I know I still have my jersey at home, even if it is gone a shade of pink now after all the years!”
From underage foundations to the senior team
Fenton’s account of Galway’s progress began before the 1972 final. GalwayBayFM reproduced his recollection that a concerted effort to strengthen underage hurling took shape in the mid-1960s with the creation of the juvenile hurling board, Coiste Iomána na nÓg. He remembered Fr Jack Solan bringing hurleys to his school: “I can still recall Fr Jack Solan, who was a big driver of that, coming to our school, opening the bonnet of the car and dropping off an armful of hurleys.”

Fenton went on to play senior hurling for Galway through the 1970s. He started at corner-back in the 1979 All-Ireland senior final against Kilkenny. That team context continued beyond his playing years: Galway won the National League in 1975, reached senior All-Ireland finals in 1975 and 1979, and claimed the senior All-Ireland title in 1980, according to the Irish Examiner.
Kiltormer’s rise through the grades
Fenton’s club career reflected the same period of momentum. Kiltormer won the Galway intermediate championship in 1975, then the senior championship in 1976 and 1977. The Irish Examiner describes Fenton as central to the club’s success in that transition.

The club later won further Galway senior titles in 1982, 1991 and 1992, and the All-Ireland club title in 1992, the Irish Examiner reported. Those later honours belong to Kiltormer’s wider history and should not be read as a claim that Fenton played in each campaign.

Bellew, as reported by the Irish Examiner, said Fenton was “at the core of that group who were the trailblazers for all of that, both in Galway and Kiltormer.” The phrase speaks to the two strands of his sporting life: the county side that broke new ground in 1972 and the club that moved from intermediate to senior champions in successive seasons.
