In 2011, researchers demonstrated a pocket-sized solar-powered torch that combined 16 organic solar cells, printed circuitry, a flexible battery and a white LED. It was a working illustration of what polymer photovoltaics could do—not evidence of a currently available product or a guide to today’s solar flashlights.
How the pocket-sized solar torch worked
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) described a flashlight designed to show that organic, or polymer, solar cells could be integrated into an operational portable device. Its 16 solar cells were connected in series to charge a battery, which then powered a white LED. The battery meant the lamp could run after charging rather than relying on sunlight at the moment it was switched on.

The RSC account described organic and polymer solar cells as reaching a point where commercial manufacturing with roll-to-roll methods was possible. The torch brought that technology together with printed electronics in a compact lamp.

Production involved 35 steps, according to the RSC. Those steps combined the polymer solar cell with printed circuitry and flexible lithium-polymer batteries. The report presented the assembly as a complex device-production achievement, rather than simply a solar cell attached to a light.

The RSC said that 10,000 units had been made by the time of its 10 August 2011 report, describing this as a first for a complex device commercialised at that scale. The account also says examples were handed out at the Large area Organic and Printed Electronics Conference (LOPE-C).
What the reported performance figures mean
The RSC reported an “89 per cent yield” and said the torch operated for hours at a time. It did not define yield in the accessible account or provide an exact runtime, test conditions, or a brightness rating. The 89 per cent figure therefore should not be read as solar-cell conversion efficiency, and neither figure is a directly comparable product specification.

The RSC says tests examined lamp efficiency and the effects of humidity and design, but its blog account does not give enough detail to interpret those results as standardized performance measurements. These numbers belong to the 2011 report of this demonstrator; they do not describe solar flashlights generally.

The durability question
The report identified longer operating life as an outstanding challenge. Frederik Krebs and his team were working on polymer solar cells intended to last outdoors for years. That concern matters because a demonstration that works for hours is not, by itself, evidence that its photovoltaic materials will withstand years of sunlight and weather.

The RSC quoted Krebs, of the Technical University of Denmark, Roskilde: “Even if the flashlight is far from solving the world’s energy problem, it clearly demonstrates that polymer solar cells are capable of fairing outside the laboratory and can be made available to the public in an operational device.” The wording, including “fairing,” is reproduced as it appears in the RSC account.
John Reynolds, identified by the RSC as an expert in conducting polymers at the University of Florida, emphasized the wider relevance of the manufacturing methods: “While the OPV powered lamp demonstrated in this work shows how this technology can be used in regions of the world where direct access to electricity by conventional sources is difficult, the methods developed will have a broader impact in the field of printable organic electronics in general,”

What the 2011 story does—and does not—establish
The torch is a historical example of organic photovoltaic technology integrated into a working light. The RSC report does not establish whether this particular demonstrator is sold today, nor does it provide current models, prices, brightness, charging times, battery capacities, warranties, or comparative performance. A modern solar-powered flashlight should not be assumed to use the same polymer-cell construction.
