NASA’s Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) lists a CME first seen on October 6, 2026, associated with active region 14549 and an M1.4 flare that peaked at 06:10 UTC. The event record describes a full-halo CME in SOHO LASCO and GOES CCOR-1 imagery; STEREO A imagery first showed it toward the northeast. When could the CME reach Earth?
CCMC displays multiple research-model runs placing a possible arrival around October 9. The estimates are not identical: some pair the arrival with Kp 3.0–4.0, others with Kp 4.0–6.0 or 5.0–6.0. These are modeled predictions, not observed geomagnetic readings or one settled operational forecast. Why an arrival would not guarantee brighter northern lights
A CME can interact with Earth’s magnetic environment, but its arrival alone does not establish that a strong geomagnetic storm will follow. The model runs differ on expected activity, and the available information does not support a specific prediction for where the aurora will be visible.
NOAA’s 27-day outlook issued October 5—before this eruption—forecast active conditions on October 6 and unsettled conditions on October 7, attributing those expectations to recurrent coronal-hole high-speed streams. Will the northern lights be visible where I live?
That cannot be determined from the CME’s arrival estimates alone. Aurora visibility depends on the evolving space-weather conditions as well as whether it is dark and clear at your location. NOAA notes that auroras are not visible during daylight and can often be seen in the hours after sunset or before sunrise. A forecast is not a guarantee of a local sighting. Use NOAA’s Aurora – 30 Minute Forecast for its short-range estimate of aurora location and intensity. It is different from a days-ahead CME arrival model: the CME scoreboard compares research-model runs, while NOAA’s aurora product estimates near-term conditions using solar-wind velocity and interplanetary magnetic-field measurements from L1, roughly 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) upstream from Earth. If those measurements are unavailable or contaminated, NOAA may use a Kp-driven alternative that can have no lead time.
