A Solana wallet sent a $10 test transfer to a lookalike address, saw that it arrived, and then sent the rest of its payment there: 30,749.80 USDT, reported as $30,750. The test proved only that the copied address could receive funds—not that it was the intended Gate.io deposit address. The incident, reported by Bitquery for November 17, 2025, shows why checking the destination against a trusted original source matters more than checking whether a transfer succeeds.
How the $30,750 loss happened
Bitquery’s account of the November 17, 2025 incident describes a wallet intending to send USDT to its Gate.io exchange deposit address. After a legitimate interaction, a similar-looking address sent the wallet a tiny transfer. The wallet later copied that lookalike from its transaction history and sent it $10 as a test. When the test arrived, the wallet sent the remaining payment to the same address: 30,749.80 USDT, which Bitquery reported as $30,750.

The test was not a check of the recipient’s identity. It established only that the address used for the test could receive a transfer. Because both the test and the larger payment went to the lookalike, the test gave no assurance that the wallet had the correct deposit destination. Bitquery’s incident report describes the sequence.

Why a tiny transfer can be a warning sign
Address poisoning relies on a user copying a deceptive address from transaction history instead of retrieving the intended destination from a trusted source. The attacker sends a small transfer from an address designed to resemble one the user has interacted with. Later, the lookalike may appear familiar in the wallet’s history, making it easier to select by mistake.

The dust transfer is bait for a copy-and-paste error. It does not, by itself, show that the sender has the wallet’s seed phrase or control of the wallet. Solscan’s explainer describes the technique and its reliance on misleading transaction history: Address Poisoning on Solana.
How to verify a Solana transfer before signing
- Retrieve the destination from its trusted original source. For an exchange deposit, use the address shown in the exchange’s deposit flow or another verified channel. Do not select a destination just because it appears in recent activity.
- Compare the full address. Check the destination presented for the transaction against the trusted source before signing. Matching only the first and last few characters is not enough: a lookalike can imitate visible fragments.
- Confirm the asset and account type. Make sure you are sending the intended token to the appropriate destination, not simply an address that looks familiar. Solana’s documentation advises checking token-account details, including whether the account matches the expected mint. It also cautions that SOL sent to a token-program-owned account rather than a token account is outside the sender’s control. See Solana’s address-verification guidance.
- If you use a test transfer, send it to the independently verified address. A small transfer can help confirm that a correctly checked destination receives funds. It cannot validate an address copied from possibly poisoned history.
What Bitquery’s figures say—and what they do not
Bitquery’s 2026 on-chain analysis estimates that 4.5 million Solana wallets were poisoned between October 30, 2025, and October 7, 2026, with about 42,000 poisoned wallets on the median day in that period. These are figures from Bitquery’s analysis, not a universal count of all address-poisoning activity.

For wallets poisoned through July 9, 2026, each of which had a three-month observation window, Bitquery identified 1,104 wallets that later paid a lookalike, totaling $940,106. The median payment was $50, and 64% of payments were under $100. Twelve payments of at least $10,000 accounted for 62% of the stolen amount in that analysis. Those cohort limits matter: the loss figures describe the specified observed group, not every wallet that was poisoned. The methodology and figures are in Bitquery’s analysis.

If a suspicious tiny transfer appears in your history
- Do not use the unfamiliar transfer’s sender address as a destination for a later payment.
- Open the intended recipient through its trusted original source and compare the full address before approving a transfer.
- Check the asset and destination account type as well as the address text.
- Do not infer that the sender has access to your wallet merely because it sent a small amount.
