The discovery led to a rescue excavation that recorded 20 burials and six supposed cremations; contemporary reports counted 26 people. A 2026 study of the surviving bones now identifies at least 17 individuals and places the cemetery in the Late Iron Age and Early Roman period.
The study argues that Highsted was a Deal-rite cemetery and, on the surviving reported count, the third-largest known example after Mill Hill and Thanet Earth. That ranking is necessarily provisional: quarrying destroyed the site, while excavation records and human remains were scattered or mixed.

How the cemetery was discovered
The skull that exposed the graves
Highsted Chalk Quarry was being worked near Rodmersham Green when quarry worker Archie Pack saw a human skull tumble down the quarry bank in 1955. Frederick George Winter subsequently uncovered more skeletons and pottery. The find triggered a rescue excavation before further chalk extraction removed the archaeological ground.
Why the numbers do not match
The excavation record described 20 inhumations and six features interpreted as cremations. Contemporary reporting therefore referred to 26 individuals. Because the quarry was later destroyed and the paperwork, objects and bones became dispersed or commingled, no modern researcher can reconstruct the cemetery’s complete plan or verify that every reported burial survives as a separate individual.

What the 2026 reanalysis established
Scientific methods applied to a damaged collection
Michael Legge and colleagues revisited material held at Maidstone Museum for a study published in the Oxford Journal of Archaeology in 2026. They combined radiocarbon dating, osteological examination, isotope analysis and ancient DNA. Despite severe fragmentation and mixing, the surviving collection represents at least 17 people.
- At least seven individuals are probably male.
- At least three are probably female.
- Some remains belonged to juveniles.
These are minimum counts, not a complete demographic profile. A fragment can establish that a person was present without allowing every bone to be assigned to a single skeleton.
A cemetery used across the Roman conquest
Radiocarbon dates place the burials in the Late Iron Age and Early Roman period. One individual may date to the second century AD. Highsted therefore records activity spanning the transition into Roman rule rather than one short-lived burial episode. The dates support continuity in the local population alongside changes in ritual and diet.

Why Highsted is called the third-largest Deal-rite cemetery
Deal-rite is the name given to a burial tradition first recognised at Mill Hill near Deal. Its most recognisable feature is a cemetery arranged in neat north–south rows. The reported Highsted burials fit that pattern. Legge and colleagues describe the site as the third-largest known Deal-rite cemetery, after Mill Hill and Thanet Earth, using the 26-person contemporary count.
“Third-largest” is a ranking within known Deal-rite cemeteries, not an exact count of everyone ever buried at Highsted. The quarry removed part of the evidence, and the surviving assemblage contains at least 17 people rather than a complete set of 26 individually identifiable skeletons.
| Comparison point | Highsted | Mill Hill | Thanet Earth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burial count used in the 2026 ranking | 26 reported burials; at least 17 people represented by surviving remains | Not stated in the 2026 reanalysis summary | Not stated in the 2026 reanalysis summary |
| Deal-rite association | North–south rows reported; classified as Deal-rite | Named site from which the tradition takes its name | Included among the larger known Deal-rite cemeteries |
| Site survival and records | Quarried away; records and finds fragmented | Not stated in the 2026 reanalysis summary | Not stated in the 2026 reanalysis summary |
| Scientific evidence discussed in the reanalysis | Radiocarbon, osteology, isotopes and ancient DNA | Not stated in the 2026 reanalysis summary | Not stated in the 2026 reanalysis summary |
The comparison is consequently strongest for Highsted’s reported size and cultural classification. The 2026 publication does not supply a new, like-for-like dataset for every characteristic of the other two cemeteries.

What the burial rites may reveal
Inhumations in ordered rows
The north–south arrangement is important because it links Highsted to the Deal-rite tradition rather than treating the graves as an unrelated cluster. The arrangement also shows why the lost site plan matters: once quarrying erased the rows, researchers could no longer study spacing, orientation and relationships between graves directly.
Six possible cremations—and a provisional bustum interpretation
Six features were recorded as cremations in 1955. The new study suggests they may instead have been bustum burials: a pyre built directly over an open grave, with the body dropping into the grave as the pyre burned down. This could explain cremated remains associated with pits, but it remains a hypothesis. The original excavation context is gone, so the reanalysis cannot test the interpretation against undisturbed layers, pyre debris or grave architecture.
Where the people came from and what they ate
Mostly local childhood origins
Isotope results indicate that the buried people generally grew up locally. Ancient DNA broadly matches Iron Age southern Britain. Two individuals stand out: one has an affinity with France or Switzerland, and another with Scotland. Those signals suggest movement into the community without replacing the predominantly local population.

Diet at a cultural turning point
Carbon and nitrogen isotope patterns fall between typical local Iron Age and Roman dietary signatures. A small seafood or imported-food signal points to changing food access or preferences as Roman influence expanded. The evidence does not justify describing the entire cemetery as either wholly “Iron Age” or wholly “Roman”; its dates and diets span the transition.

Osteological examination identified several conditions and injuries, although commingling prevents every observation from being assigned to a named individual:

Ancient DNA also indicates that one man and one woman were related at third degree or more distantly. The result demonstrates a biological connection within the cemetery but does not establish a complete family tree.

Why the lost remains still matter
Highsted is unusual because a site treated as badly lost still yielded substantial information. The quarry destroyed the cemetery itself, and the collection’s fragmentation limits what can be said about individual graves, sex ratios and the possible cremations. Yet radiocarbon measurements provide a multi-period chronology; isotopes reveal broadly local childhood origins and changing diets; DNA identifies regional affinities and a distant relationship; and osteology records disease, injury and everyday dental stress.
The 2026 reanalysis therefore changes the central question. Highsted is not simply a 1955 quarry accident or an unverified “Iron Age cemetery.” It is a damaged but scientifically valuable record of a local community burying its dead through the Late Iron Age and into the Roman period, using rites that connect it to the Deal-rite tradition.
