A team led by Osaka University has demonstrated a gold-nanogap chip that reads electrical signals from individual amino-acid molecules and uses machine learning to tell their left- and right-handed forms apart. That distinction matters because Earth life overwhelmingly uses L-amino acids, while nonbiological chemistry more often produces a more even L/D mixture.
The result is a promising way to look for a chemical biosignature in a collected sample—not a remote alien-life detector. The first experiments reached more than 80% accuracy for individual L/D identifications, but the system still needs sample preparation, broader training and validation on unknown mixtures before it could be considered for a planetary rover.

What the chip actually measures
The device contains a microscopic gap between two gold electrodes. When an amino-acid molecule passes through that gap, electrons can cross by quantum tunneling. Each crossing produces a brief current spike whose shape depends on the molecule.
Software analyzes those spikes and classifies both molecular identity and chirality. Because the measurement is electrical and occurs at the single-molecule level, the platform can build a signal from many individual molecular events rather than relying on a bulk optical response.

The system is custom-built, not a general-purpose life scanner. It was trained to recognize a targeted set of amino acids, and its performance depends on the molecule being measured and the surrounding sample matrix.
Why amino-acid “handedness” can be a biosignature
Chirality in plain language
Many amino acids exist as two mirror-image versions, called enantiomers. The L and D forms contain the same atoms and chemical bonds, but their three-dimensional arrangements are reversed. Ordinary chemistry can make both forms, whereas terrestrial proteins overwhelmingly use L-amino acids.
What scientists look for
A sample with a strong excess of L-amino acids can therefore be consistent with biological processing. An abiotic source commonly tends toward a more balanced mixture, although geology, radiation, contamination and other chemical processes can also alter the ratio. Chirality is consequently a potential biosignature, not proof of life by itself. A convincing interpretation would require the pattern across multiple compounds, contamination controls and independent chemical measurements.

What the first test showed
The peer-reviewed study was published in Nature Communications on 5 October 2026. The team flowed amino-acid solutions through the gold nanogap, recorded the tunneling-current spikes and applied machine learning to identify molecules and their handedness.

The authors also found that confidence filtering removed ambiguous events. That can improve the reliability of accepted calls, but it does not make uncertain or unrecognized molecules disappear; a field instrument would need a way to flag those cases rather than force every signal into a known category.
Did it really test a meteorite?
Yes, but the experiment did not detect extraterrestrial organisms. The researchers analyzed extracts from the Murchison meteorite, a meteorite that fell in Australia, and soil samples from Chile’s Atacama Desert. They compared the targeted amino-acid measurements with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Murchison material is valuable because meteorites can preserve organic compounds formed without biology. Atacama soils provide a demanding terrestrial matrix in which environmental chemistry and possible contamination must be considered. Both samples were collected and prepared on Earth; neither represents a sample taken from Mars, an icy moon or another world.

A current spike that is easy to interpret in a clean solution can overlap with signals from other compounds in a chemically complex extract.
How the nanogap method compares with LC-MS
LC-MS remains the reference method used in this study. It separates compounds chromatographically and identifies them by mass-to-charge measurements. The nanogap approach trades that established breadth for compact, single-molecule electrical sensing.

“Compact” does not mean ready to fly. A rover payload must also include fluid handling, contamination control, calibration materials, power and thermal management, and a strategy for disposing of or reusing prepared samples.

Build reference materials that match real samples
The team identifies matrix-matched reference materials as a priority. Standards prepared in clean solvent do not fully represent meteorite powders, mineral-rich soil or other samples in which interfering compounds can change the signal.
Collect more molecular events
Larger event statistics should make concentration and L/D estimates more stable. A rover cannot assume that a short run will produce the same confidence as a carefully controlled laboratory measurement.

Add open-set recognition
The present classifier is targeted: it recognizes compounds represented in its training data. Open-set recognition would let the system identify when a signal belongs to a molecule outside that set instead of assigning a misleading known label.
Validate unknown mixtures and contamination controls
Future tests need blind, chemically complex samples with independently verified composition, along with procedural blanks and controls for terrestrial amino-acid contamination. The key question is not whether the chip can classify a prepared standard, but whether an unexpected L/D pattern survives every alternative explanation.
What this result means now
The first test establishes a useful analytical capability: a small electrical sensor can distinguish amino-acid mirror images at the single-molecule level and can extract chirality information from mixtures. That is a meaningful step toward instruments that are smaller than conventional laboratory systems.
