After her death in 1991, a relative had it appraised; news reports later put its estimated value at around €1 million—roughly $1.1 million in one report. That figure is an estimate, not a confirmed sale price.
What was the doorstop?
The stone was amber reportedly found in a stream bed near Colți, in southeastern Romania. The woman used it as a doorstop for decades, apparently unaware of its significance. Reporting identifies the specimen as rumanite, a form of Romanian amber.

Coverage places its geological age at roughly 38–70 million years. NDTV gives the lower bound more precisely as 38.5 million years; these are reported dating estimates, not a newly established measurement.
How was it recognized?
The woman died in 1991. A relative who inherited the property noticed the unusually heavy stone and arranged for it to be appraised. Polish specialists at the Museum of History in Kraków reportedly confirmed that it was genuine amber and estimated its age. Reports say Romanian authorities acquired the specimen, but do not establish the exact transaction details or date.

Was it really worth $1 million?
News coverage has cited an estimated value of around €1 million, which NDTV rendered as approximately $1.1 million. Neither figure is a verified sale or auction result. The dollar amount is an approximate conversion of the euro estimate, and the reports do not establish that anyone paid that amount.
Its significance is not just financial. Buzău County Museum director Daniel Costache, in a statement Euronews attributed to an interview with El País, said: “Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level.” A later report described the specimen’s scientific and cultural value as incalculable.

Where is the amber now?
The specimen is reported to be held by Buzău County Museum and classified as a protected Romanian national treasure. Euronews reported that the museum planned further scientific analyses. As of Futura-Sciences’ October 3, 2026 account, a full analysis of the amber’s internal inclusions had not been published.

Why ordinary amber is not a fair comparison
Amber is also used in jewelry, but ordinary amber jewelry is not comparable to this unusually large, museum-held specimen. Its reported estimate should not be treated as a guide to the value of a piece of jewelry or another amber object.
