Hybrid malware classifiers that combine static and dynamic evidence with gradient boosting can be highly accurate on curated benchmarks, but their reliability depends on how features are selected and how the model is validated. Studies published in 2026 report 100% accuracy on the MALIMG image dataset, 98.10% and 98.40% on combined malware-image datasets, and 99.30% test accuracy for a genetic-algorithm-selected XGBoost model. Those numbers demonstrate strong closed-set classification, not guaranteed detection of previously unseen families, heavily obfuscated samples, or adversarially modified malware.
What the hybrid gradient-boosting method does
The method represents malware with heterogeneous features, then uses a gradient-boosting classifier—typically XGBoost—to assign a family or type label. Static features are extracted without running the sample. Depending on the platform, they can include byte or opcode statistics, imported APIs, headers, permissions, strings, wavelet coefficients, image statistics, gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture measurements, and shape descriptors. Dynamic features come from controlled execution, such as process activity, file-system changes, registry operations, API calls, and network behavior.

The exact-title Scientific Reports study converts malware samples into benchmark image representations and combines wavelet and other statistical descriptors with gradient boosting. It evaluates the MelVis and MALIMG datasets. Its abstract reports “100%” accuracy on MALIMG and 98.10% and 98.40% on combined datasets. These are dataset-specific results under the study’s labels and split protocol.
A related GA–XGBoost approach first selects nine handcrafted features from statistical, GLCM-texture, and shape groups. The genetic-algorithm selection is performed only on the training data, avoiding a common form of test-set leakage. With a stratified 80:20 train/test split, it reports 99.30% test accuracy, 99.32% precision, 99.30% recall, 99.30% F1, and a Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.9918.

Why combine static and dynamic features?
Static analysis is fast but can be concealed
Static extraction does not require executing a suspicious file, so it is suitable for triage, large-scale scanning, and environments where detonation is unsafe or expensive. Packing, encryption, polymorphism, and other obfuscation techniques can hide the very structures on which a static model depends, however.
Dynamic analysis exposes behavior
Sandbox execution can reveal actions that are difficult to disguise in a file alone: child processes, persistence, dropped files, configuration changes, and command-and-control traffic. It requires isolation, increases processing cost, and can miss behavior that activates only after a delay, on a particular host, or when the sandbox is detected.

Fusion can improve coverage and speed
A lightweight fusion study using 5,000 benign and malicious samples reported 97.3% accuracy, average inference below 12 milliseconds per sample, and a 38% reduction in feature dimensionality compared with its full-feature baseline. The result suggests that a carefully engineered hybrid vector need not be prohibitively large or slow, but the timing figure belongs to that study’s hardware and feature pipeline rather than every deployment.

How to build and validate the classifier
- Define the prediction task. Decide whether the label is benign versus malicious, malware family, platform, or a multi-label combination. Family labels and platform coverage must be recorded because a model trained on one taxonomy cannot automatically classify another.
- Separate samples before feature work. Create training, validation, and held-out test partitions at the appropriate unit. If near-duplicate files or variants from one family can occur in multiple partitions, group them or use a family-separated split to prevent inflated scores.
- Extract static features consistently. Record the extractor version, missing-value policy, file format, and normalization. For image-based methods, preserve the same byte-to-image conversion and image dimensions used during training.
- Collect dynamic evidence safely. Execute samples only in an isolated, instrumented environment. Log the observation window, sandbox configuration, network policy, and handling of samples that fail to detonate.
- Fuse and select features inside the training fold. Concatenate or otherwise combine modalities, then perform genetic-algorithm selection, scaling, or any other reduction using training data only. Applying selection to the entire dataset before splitting leaks information from the test set.
- Train gradient boosting and tune thresholds. XGBoost handles mixed, nonlinear feature relationships and provides feature-importance tools. Tune hyperparameters and the decision threshold on validation data, not on the final test set.
- Report more than accuracy. Include macro and per-family precision, recall, F1, MCC, confusion matrices, false-positive rate, false-negative rate, calibration, and inference latency. Accuracy can conceal poor performance on a small but important family.
- Run deployment-oriented tests. Keep a temporal holdout, a family-separated holdout, or both. Test packed and obfuscated samples, samples from new campaigns, and benign software that resembles malware. Preserve the original closed-set benchmark result separately from these harder evaluations.
What the published numbers do—and do not—prove
The 100% MALIMG result and the 98.10%/98.40% combined-dataset results show that the chosen representations separate the reported benchmark classes under the study conditions. They do not establish performance against malware families absent from those datasets, future samples, adversarially manipulated images, or production telemetry with missing dynamic events.

Likewise, the 99.30% GA–XGBoost result is persuasive partly because feature selection was confined to the training data. Reusing the same protocol on a different corpus may produce a different score because class balance, duplicate content, labeling quality, and family composition change.

Packing and encryption
Obfuscation can remove or distort static signals. Dynamic traces may recover useful behavior, but only if the sandbox triggers the relevant code path. A robust system should retain modality-specific scores so analysts can see when static and dynamic evidence disagree.

New families and temporal drift
The available reports are benchmark evaluations; they do not establish time-separated novel-family performance for the exact method. Malware developers change loaders, APIs, infrastructure, and packing choices, so retraining and drift monitoring are necessary. A temporal test set should remain untouched until final evaluation.

Adversarial manipulation
Attackers can add benign-looking content, alter image layouts, or change execution behavior without changing the payload’s objective. Feature importance should therefore support investigation, not serve as a security guarantee. Thresholds should be calibrated against the cost of missed malware and the analyst workload created by false alarms.

Practical decision guide
- Use static-only classification when latency, scale, or safety prevents execution, while accepting greater exposure to packing and encryption.
- Add dynamic features when behavioral visibility justifies sandbox cost and the platform permits reliable detonation.
- Keep heterogeneous features when validation shows that reduction harms recall; in the Android evaluation, PCA reduced XGBoost accuracy from 0.9747 to 0.9164 and F1 from 0.9716 to 0.8988.
- Prefer a compact selected vector when it preserves per-family recall and materially lowers extraction or inference cost, as in the reported 38% dimensionality reduction study.
- Do not treat benchmark accuracy as a production service-level objective. Establish separate targets for false negatives, false positives, latency, drift, and analyst review capacity.
Bottom line for practitioners
Hybrid static–dynamic features paired with XGBoost are a credible, GPU-free route to fast and interpretable malware classification. The strongest evidence supports excellent performance on the named benchmark datasets and, in other evaluations, roughly 95%–97% accuracy on mixed real-world-style corpora. Reliability in a live defense system still depends on leakage-controlled splits, temporal and family-separated testing, safe dynamic collection, calibrated thresholds, and ongoing monitoring for obfuscation and drift.
