The Halloween survival-horror release that most closely matches this headline was Outbreak: The New Nightmare, not a new Silent Hill game. In an August 26, 2020 PlayStation.Blog announcement, Dead Drop Studios said the Outbreak series was coming to PS4, beginning the next day with The New Nightmare. The post invoked Silent Hill as a comparison for its retro style; it did not announce a Silent Hill title.
What was Outbreak: The New Nightmare?
Dead Drop Studios presented The New Nightmare as a retro-style survival-horror game built around conventions associated with 1990s titles. The announcement describes fixed camera views, strict inventory management and optional tank controls, and lists 16 scenarios across Campaign, Onslaught Mode and Experiments Mode. These are the developer’s descriptions in the official PlayStation.Blog announcement, rather than independent review findings.

The post compared its approach to 1990s classics including Resident Evil and Silent Hill. That is a stylistic comparison, not evidence of an official connection, equivalent gameplay, or a new entry in either franchise.

How do its survival mechanics work?
The announcement describes scenarios in which players search for supplies, conserve ammunition and use maps to plan routes. Written logs and environmental clues can help solve puzzles. Survivors have different starting equipment and abilities, and can gain additional abilities as they progress.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.
- Reimagined Story – Resident Evil 4 dials up the original release’s key feelings of loneliness and the fear of enemies blinded by zealotry, while providing more nuanced depictions of the character motivations and relationships that defined the 2005 survival horror icon.
Each scenario was described as having a single life: if the player dies, they return to the beginning of that scenario. That makes careful resource use and route planning central to the experience as described by the studio.
