That is an unverified asking price—not a confirmed sale or an independently checked listing. Before paying, make sure the shop can remove the previous owner’s Apple Account and demonstrate that the Mac can be erased and activated in front of you.
What the $550 report does—and does not—tell buyers
The Reddit post describes a 13-inch M5 MacBook Air at a pawn shop, but the shop and individual computer have not been independently identified. The reported $550 is not a verified transaction or a confirmed valuation. The report does not establish the Mac’s exact configuration, condition, ownership, management status, repair history, or whether it was ultimately sold.

The discussion also mentions an association with another person’s account and includes disagreement about whether it had been removed. Those comments are anecdotal: they do not establish the unit’s final state or prove that it was stolen. No reliable market statistic in the available sources establishes typical pawn-shop MacBook prices, theft prevalence, or an expected discount.
Why Activation Lock is the first issue to resolve
Activation Lock can prevent a new buyer from erasing or activating a Mac without the credentials or passcode required by the previous owner’s account. Apple Support explains: “With Activation Lock, your Apple Account password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your Mac or reactivate and use your Mac.” Read Apple’s Activation Lock for Mac guidance.

A setup or Hello screen alone is not conclusive proof that every account or management restriction has been cleared. The practical test is whether the seller can remove the prior account and the Mac completes erasure and activation while connected to the internet.
What to require before handing over payment
- Ask the shop to remove the previous owner’s account. The prior owner or authorized seller should sign out of the Apple Account or turn off Find My. Apple’s instructions for turning off Find My on Mac explain the process.
- Keep the Mac online. Ask the shop to connect it to the internet so activation can be tested rather than inferred from an offline screen.
- Have the shop erase it and let you proceed through setup. Confirm it can be activated without requesting credentials from the prior account. Do not pay on the promise that a lock can be removed later.
- Walk away if the shop cannot complete the check. Apple says the relevant account password or device passcode is required for the protected actions; do not assume a restriction can be bypassed.
Check the machine itself, not just its price
The report does not verify this Mac’s specifications or condition. Confirm the exact chip and screen size, memory, and storage on the device, and inspect it in person for physical damage and signs of repair. Check battery condition and ask about repair history, warranty or service coverage, and what return protection the shop offers. Apple’s repair and coverage page provides service and coverage entry points, but device-specific status requires information about the actual Mac.

Also ask whether the device is subject to management enrollment or other organizational restrictions. The available account-lock guidance does not establish the management status of this unit, so successful account removal should not substitute for asking the shop what it can verify and what protections apply if setup later reveals a restriction.

A June 8, 2026 9to5Toys report described an Amazon offer for a different machine: a 15-inch M5 MacBook Air with 24 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage for $1,149.99, then framed as $549 off. The report says that offer expired. It is historical context, not a current price and not a like-for-like valuation of an unidentified 13-inch pawn-shop unit. See the June 8 deal report.

A meaningful comparison would require matching screen size, memory, and storage, as well as knowing the used Mac’s condition, account and management status, coverage, and return protections. Those details are not established for the reported unit, so the $550 figure alone cannot show whether it is a bargain.
