Richard Browning reached 85.06 mph (136.891 km/h) at Brighton Pier in East Sussex on 14 November 2019, setting Guinness World Records’ fastest speed in a body-controlled jet-engine-powered suit. “Iron Man jet pack” is a useful shorthand, but the machine is a wearable suit with distributed turbine engines—not a conventional backpack-only jetpack.
That 2019 result is the headline achievement. The evidence available here does not establish whether Guinness has since ratified a faster attempt, so it should not be presented as the current 2026 record without checking the latest listing.

What record did the Iron Man-style suit break?
The verified mark was a peak-speed record, not a distance race or a claim that the suit is commercially available to consumers. Guinness recorded Browning’s 85.06 mph (136.891 km/h) run at Brighton Pier on 14 November 2019 under the category “fastest speed in a body-controlled jet-engine-powered suit.”

Browning had previously set the same category’s mark at 32.02 mph (51.53 km/h) at Lagoona Park in Reading on 9 November 2017. Guinness said the speed was verified over at least 100 metres and that Browning achieved it on his third and final timed attempt. The 2019 result was more than twice that earlier figure.

How the suit differs from a conventional jetpack
The pilot controls thrust with body position and hand controls while wearing engines on the suit. Guinness’s 2017 account described six kerosene-fuelled micro gas turbines, each producing 22 kg of thrust. That historical description should not be treated as a guaranteed specification for the 2019 run or for the company’s current hardware.
Gravity Industries’ resource pack describes a different configuration with five turbines, flight time of “up to 8 minutes,” and speed “typically in excess of 60km/h.” The pack’s publication date is unclear in the available material, and turbine counts, fuel loads and performance can change between prototypes. These figures are therefore company-published specifications, not independently verified details of the Brighton record.

Why the numbers are easy to misread
Peak speed versus 100-metre time
An 85.06-mph peak and a 7.69-second 100-metre run measure different things. The first is maximum speed in the 2019 category; the second is elapsed time over a fixed distance in 2021. Neither converts automatically into the other without knowing acceleration, speed profile and timing conditions.

The 2019 and 2021 figures are Guinness results. The approximately 80-mph figure reported from the 2024 Dubai event was attributed to Gravity Industries by the Associated Press. A company’s stated capability is not equivalent to a newly adjudicated world record.

Changing configurations
The six-turbine, 22-kg-per-engine description comes from Guinness’s 2017 report, while the five-turbine and eight-minute figures come from Gravity’s resource pack. Combining them into one definitive model specification would be misleading.
What happened at the 2024 Dubai race?
The Associated Press reported that Gravity’s pilots used engines controlled from their hands and backs, and that one pilot crashed into the water during the event. The report attributed an approximately 80-mph (128-km/h) capability to the company at that time. That episode illustrates both the performance and the hazards of low-level human flight; it does not change the Guinness status of Browning’s 2019 result.

Is the suit available to buy or book?
Gravity Industries describes entertainment and commercial programs operating worldwide, and says defence, military and medical-response organisations have shown interest. Those statements establish company programs and interest, not routine operational deployment, proven rescue capability, public booking terms or consumer ownership.

This is a specialist experimental aircraft worn by its pilot, not a practical replacement for a helicopter, aircraft or personal transport. Its short flight duration, fuel-burning turbines, demanding control system and serious crash risk limit where and how it can be used. The achievement is best understood as a milestone in human-flight engineering and piloting rather than proof of an everyday Iron Man suit.
