Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A microphone picks up the sounds outside, BirdNET-Go works out which species are singing, and Fugleramme shows a matching historical bird illustration on a screen, most commonly a 13.3-inch Pimoroni Inky Impression e-ink panel driven by a Raspberry Pi 5. The project describes itself as early development, so expect rough edges.
How the frame decides which bird to show
The chain has three parts: a microphone, a detector, and the frame software. Each one does a separate job, which matters when something goes wrong.

- The microphone captures ambient sound. The project’s hardware list requires one. Its job is to pick up bird calls from the surroundings; it does not record images.
- BirdNET-Go identifies the species. It analyses the audio and reports which birds it detects. This is a separate component that the Fugleramme setup installs alongside the frame software.
- Fugleramme polls the detector’s API. It asks BirdNET-Go what it has heard. If BirdNET-Go is already running on the same computer or elsewhere on your network, the project documentation says Fugleramme can use that existing instance.
- Each species is matched to an illustration. The software looks up the bird in its artwork collection.
- A page is composed and drawn. The screen is redrawn when the set of detected birds changes, so the picture follows what is singing outside.
Audio, not a camera
The title’s phrase “identifies the birds outside your window” is accurate only in a specific sense. Fugleramme recognises birds from their calls in the surrounding soundscape, then displays a picture that corresponds to the species it heard. It does not photograph a feeder, run image recognition on a live camera feed, or confirm that a bird is visible.
That distinction matters for expectations. A bird that is calling from behind a hedge can appear on the frame, and a silent bird sitting in plain view will not. Camera-based Raspberry Pi bird projects exist and work differently; their results should not be assumed for Fugleramme.

What you need to build it
Fugleramme is a build, not a finished product you can buy off a shelf. The table below separates what the project names from what a second published source reports.
| Component | What is established | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 | Named as the project’s recommended computer in the project README. Tom’s Guide’s reported parts list specifies a 2GB model (Tom’s Guide, 16 September 2026). | Choose the Pi 5 the project names; a different memory configuration is not covered by the source. |
| Pimoroni Inky Impression 13.3-inch Spectra 6 | Named in the project README as the colour e-ink panel for the frame look. | This is the defining display, but it is optional. The software can run web-only on another screen. |
| Microphone | Required by the project’s hardware list. Tom’s Guide’s list includes one. | No particular microphone model is tested or endorsed by the project. Pick one that works with your Pi’s audio input setup. |
| microSD card | Tom’s Guide’s reported list specifies 32GB or more. Cornell’s separate BirdNET-Pi guide recommends a fast SD card for that related project. | Treat 32GB as the reported build figure, not a verified project minimum. Speed matters for a system that writes continuously. |
| USB audio adapter | Included in Tom’s Guide’s reported parts list. | No specific adapter model is required by the project; not stated. |
| A4 picture frame | Included in the project README and Tom’s Guide’s list. | Check the frame’s inner dimensions against the 13.3-inch panel before buying. |
The Fugleramme README discloses that its creator is affiliated with Pimoroni, and says purchases through the creator’s links or checkout code support the project. Check current stock and pricing with the retailer directly.

Choosing a display: e-ink frame or any screen
The e-ink panel is the intended picture-frame treatment, but it is not the only option. The same software can run web-only on a television, an HDMI monitor, another device on the network, or as a desktop wallpaper or screensaver.

|---|---|---|
| Dedicated e-ink frame (Inky Impression 13.3-inch) | A framed object on a wall that looks like art and sits in one place. | Requires buying the panel and fitting it into a frame; the project’s display hardware is specific, and availability can change. |
| Web-only on an existing screen | A quick setup using a display you already own. | Not a picture-frame look; a screen running continuously has its own power and placement considerations. |
Compare the options on three questions: whether you want a dedicated framed display, what the display hardware costs and how easily you can get it, and how comfortable you are configuring a DIY system. The sources do not give comparable prices or power-consumption figures, so no numerical comparison is offered here.

Where the pictures come from
The illustrations are historic bird plates from natural-history works, not generated bird art. The project README says the cutouts were curated by hand, and reports more than 1,000 cutouts covering more than 500 species. These are the maintainer’s collection totals as stated in the README, accessed in 2026; they are not an independent count and do not measure how often the software picks the right picture.
Regional coverage
Coverage is uneven, and the project says so. According to the README, coverage is strongest across Europe and northern Asia, good in North America, and thinner in the tropics and the southern hemisphere. Before building around a particular garden or local species, check the supported-species list for your location. If your region is in the thinner group, a bird you hear regularly may not have an illustration.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
How mature the project is
- The repository labels Fugleramme early development and says bugs and unfinished edges should be expected.
- Hardware fit, the availability of the named display, software setup steps, and regional illustration coverage can all change between releases.
- Tom’s Guide, in a 16 September 2026 article, described the project as a DIY build and explained the audio-based approach.
Licensing if you plan to reuse or sell it
Licensing is split across several parts, and they should not be treated as one blanket licence:
- Fugleramme code is MIT licensed, according to the README.
- BirdNET-Go, the detection component installed separately, is licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 and is non-commercial only.
- Artwork and data carry their own terms. Check them before any commercial use or redistribution.
A personal build for your own window falls under the non-commercial terms of the detector. Any product, kit, or paid service built on this stack needs a proper licence review first.

What is and is not established about accuracy
No quantified identification accuracy figure for Fugleramme was found in the project documentation, Tom’s Guide’s article, or Cornell’s BirdNET-Pi onboarding guide. Cornell’s guide is an official source for a related Raspberry Pi bird-audio station, but it is a different project. The existence of BirdNET-Go and the size of the illustration library do not, on their own, establish how often a bird is correctly identified. Judge the frame by trying it in your own location.
Fugleramme project repository (primary source for workflow, hardware, screen options, artwork, coverage, maturity and licences). Tom’s Guide article, 16 September 2026 (secondary report on the parts list and the DIY status). Cornell Lab BirdNET-Pi onboarding guide (adjacent official guidance for a separate project).
Bottom line for a reader: Fugleramme is a worthwhile weekend-scale project if you have a Raspberry Pi 5, a microphone, and a tolerance for early-stage software, and if your local birds are covered by its illustration set. It is not a camera, not a finished consumer product, and not a verified accuracy tool.
