Let’s Not Be Hangry is a small household decision aid: choose how much time you have, and it suggests something already marked fair game, where to find it, and how to eat it. Creator Tanya Mott built it for her boyfriend, who sometimes forgot to eat while busy. It is not a meal planner, grocery service, or nutrition app.
How the app works
The central question is simple: “How much time you got?” The user chooses one, five, or fifteen minutes. Gemma then picks from the household’s fair-game list, identifies where the food is stored, and explains how to eat it. Mott says the app prioritizes options that require no cooking.

The fair-game list addresses a specific household problem: someone may be willing to help but unsure which food they can take without asking. The suggestions are limited to food the household has explicitly made available; the app does not shop for food or prescribe what someone should eat.
Reminders, logging, and restocking
- “I ate!”: A readily accessible button lets the user record that they have eaten.
- Meal-window reminders: Mott says a reminder appears if no meal has been logged by the end of the selected lunch or dinner window. Its wording is generated fresh each time.
- Restock list: Marking a listed item finished adds it to a restock list.
Mott says the model is instructed to be warm, brief, and lightly funny, and not to mention calories, diets, or guilt. One example she gives is a suggestion for string cheese in the fridge door, paired with encouragement to take it.

Hosted Google AI Studio or local Ollama?
Mott describes two ways to run Gemma. The choice changes where inference happens and what setup is required; the source does not report comparative speed, measured cost, or benchmark results.

Mott describes the project as an Angular 22 frontend with a Node/Express server. The server serves the app and forwards /api/chat requests to Gemma. She says the server keeps the API key out of the browser and applies a simple rate limit. The fair-game list, restock list, and log are stored in browser localStorage.

Her account also describes recovery behavior for hosted requests: the server retries after a Google error, checks which Gemma models the key can use, and may fall back to another available Gemma model. If it cannot reach a model, a built-in demo-mode suggestion is used. These are implementation details reported by the creator, not independently audited guarantees.

What is known about privacy and reliability
The hosted and local options should not be treated as interchangeable privacy configurations. Mott’s “nothing leaves the house” description is specifically about local Ollama inference on her laptop. The project article does not provide a detailed data-flow inventory, retention policy, threat model, or external security review. It also does not establish what information, if any, is retained by the hosted service.

The localStorage lists and log are described as browser-stored data, while model requests are handled by the server. The article does not spell out a full data-flow map connecting these pieces, so it would be inaccurate to infer a complete privacy guarantee from either implementation detail.
The public demo is hosted on Render’s free plan, and Mott warns that it may take up to a minute to load after inactivity. That is a caveat about the demo’s hosting, not a stated measure of the app’s normal response time.

What the feedback does—and does not—show
Mott reports informal feedback from her boyfriend: he found it helpful for deciding what to eat given the available time, and said reminders helped. He also said it took a little while to figure out, though it then seemed self-explanatory. These comments are one person’s reaction reported by the creator; they do not establish broader usability, health, or behavior outcomes.
