A Quantum Prediction from 1931 Comes to Life in an Ultracold Cesium Gas

Physicists have created and observed Bethe strings—multiparticle quantum states bound by particle interactions—in an ultracold cesium gas confined to one-dimensional tubes. The result, reported by the University of Innsbruck in September 2026, brings a long-standing theoretical prediction into a controllable atomic-gas setting. It does not mean the particles form ordinary molecules: their binding comes from quantum interactions, not chemical bonds.

What are Bethe strings?

Bethe strings are bound groups of particles associated with certain one-dimensional quantum systems. The particles remain together because of their interactions, rather than because they have formed chemical bonds. The university describes these states as existing only in one dimension.

Their name reflects a mathematical description of collective quantum behavior. The University of Innsbruck says the states were predicted in 1931 and remained primarily theoretical for decades. It also acknowledges earlier experimental observations in solid-state magnetic systems. The 2026 result is a realization in an ultracold atomic gas, not the first experimental observation of Bethe strings in any setting.

How did the team create them?

A team led by quantum physicist Hanns-Christoph Nägerl cooled cesium atoms to temperatures a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero, then divided the cloud among several thousand narrow tubes. Within each tube, the atoms could move essentially along one direction. The researchers tuned the interactions between atoms from repulsive to attractive, creating bound states of different sizes, including clusters of six or more particles.

  • WIDE APPLICATION: Suitable for use in schools, laboratories, and other educational settings, making it a versatile teaching aid.

This arrangement gives researchers a setting in which geometry and interactions can be controlled. The university also identifies particle density as a controllable feature of the platform, but its account does not provide detailed numerical measurements for these experimental conditions.

How did scientists tell that the particles were bound?

The researchers compared the atoms’ energy after two kinds of expansion. In one, the atoms remained confined to their one-dimensional tubes as they expanded. In the other, the confinement was removed, allowing them to expand in three dimensions.

  1. Keep the tubes in place: the Bethe strings collided and remained intact during the one-dimensional expansion.
  2. Remove the confinement: the strings broke apart during three-dimensional expansion. Because the states depend on one-dimensional confinement, their breakup converted binding energy into additional motion.

The difference between the two expansion measurements served as the reported signature of the bound states. For unbound particles in the repulsive regime, the university says the two measurements gave essentially the same energy. This contrast is the key to the experiment: it tests whether the apparent group remains bound under one-dimensional motion and reveals what happens when that defining confinement is removed.

What is new about this experiment?

The advance is the experimental setting. Bethe strings had also been observed in solid-state magnetic systems; the Innsbruck team reports creating and probing them in a tunable ultracold atomic gas. The university presents the gas platform as a way to study how these collective states form and interact, including their reported stability in collisions.

The university’s account supports a fundamental-physics result, not a claim of an immediate consumer technology or practical application. The experiment depends on specialist ultracold-atom laboratory conditions and is not something readers can reproduce with consumer equipment.

Why did a prediction from 1931 take so long to observe?

The available account does not establish why an ultracold-gas realization took until 2026, so a specific historical explanation would be speculation. It does describe what the new platform makes possible: researchers can confine atoms to near-one-dimensional motion, tune their interactions, and compare their behavior under different expansion conditions.
