Verifact Markets is trying a different question: can a market help settle disputed claims about events that have already happened? The idea is novel, but its central challenge is trust: traders do not decide the answer, and the company’s method for evaluating evidence has not been made public in detail.
How is Verifact different from a conventional prediction market?
In a conventional prediction market, traders take positions on a specified future event, with a contract typically resolved against an outcome defined in advance. Verifact’s proposed niche is a true-or-false market about disputed past events. Because the event has already happened, the hard part is not forecasting the outcome; it is deciding what counts as sufficient evidence and who gets to judge it.

WIRED reported on October 5, 2026, that Verifact was launching with the origins of Covid-19 as its featured beta market. The story also named initial topics including whether Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide and whether State Farm intentionally delayed claims related to the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. Those were examples in the report, not confirmation that the listings remain open or available.
Who decides whether a disputed claim is true?
Verifact says it will weigh market prices alongside documentation submitted by users. The company, rather than a trader vote or the market price alone, makes the final decision about whether the evidence is sufficient. A price can show what participants are willing to trade at; it does not establish that a claim is true.

That makes the resolution process the product’s defining feature—and its biggest unresolved question. WIRED said the company had revealed few details about how it would determine truth. CEO and cofounder Rodrigo Aquino described a planned system that analyzes “a multitude of data points,” calling it “very mathematical, very quantitative” and “very secretive.” The report did not lay out public rules, validation, or a reproducible method that would let readers evaluate the system independently.
What if Verifact cannot reach a decision?
According to WIRED, the company plans to expire a market if it cannot decide the claim and pay users based on its calculation of the odds at that time. That fallback still relies on the platform’s own calculation; it is not a neutral finding that the claim is true or false.

What did the Covid-origin market price show?
WIRED reported a time-specific snapshot of 76 cents for “true” and 32 cents for “false” on the Covid-origin market as of the article’s writing. Those figures add up to more than a dollar, and the report does not provide enough context to explain why. They should not be treated as probabilities, a stable market state, or evidence for either position.

Backer Peter Wokwicz said, “I’m excited, because nobody’s done this before,” and said, “We’re not going to shy away from controversial markets.” His ambition that Verifact would “bring out truth—what is true and false” is a backer’s aspiration, not evidence that the platform can reliably resolve difficult questions.

Verifact is an attempt to apply market trading to disputed facts from the past, but the market is not the judge: the company is. Until its evidence rules and decision method are sufficiently transparent to assess, Verifact’s prices are best understood as trading signals, not historical findings. The concept may attract attention precisely because the questions are controversial; whether its process can earn trust is a separate matter.
