Yes, the story was real—but the headline is misleading. In 2019, adult-VR company BaDoinkVR marketed Porn in a Box, a standard 32GB Oculus Go bundled with custom software and reported preloaded adult videos. Oculus did not manufacture or officially sell a porn-focused Go, and adult content was not part of the normal Oculus package.
What Oculus officially launched
Oculus launched the Go on May 1, 2018, as a general-purpose standalone headset. It started at $199 and did not require a gaming PC or smartphone for normal operation. Oculus promoted more than 1,000 apps, games and experiences in its launch announcement, not an adult-content edition. See the official Oculus Go announcement.

What “Porn in a Box” actually was
BaDoinkVR’s product used a commercially available 32GB Oculus Go, according to contemporary reports. The company added a custom launcher or app and adult VR content so a buyer could begin viewing without finding compatible services, downloading files or configuring software independently.

That makes it a third-party bundle or configured retail unit—not a new Oculus model, special optical system or factory adult edition. Reporting does not establish the exact number of included videos, their licensing terms, whether every title was stored locally, or whether access depended on an account or website.

How much did it cost?
| Product | Reported price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Oculus Go | $199 starting price | Oculus’s U.S. launch price in May 2018 |
| BaDoinkVR Porn in a Box | $299.99 | Reported U.S. price in 2019; not a current verified price |
| Difference | About $100 | Premium for configuration and bundled content, not upgraded hardware |
The $299.99 figure comes from contemporary secondary coverage rather than a currently verifiable official product page. SexTechGuide’s report described the package and its premium over the ordinary Go.
What buyers were paying for
- Less setup: the headset was configured for adult VR rather than requiring the buyer to search for players or downloads.
- Standalone use: no gaming computer, cables or phone-based viewer was needed.
- Bundled access: adult videos and software were reported to be included, although the long-term access terms are unclear.
The underlying Go was already capable of displaying compatible VR video. Contemporary guides described streaming or downloading content and using browser-based or third-party video tools. Compatibility depended on the file’s resolution, codec, 180-degree or 360-degree layout, monoscopic or stereoscopic format, player support and available storage. A standard Go owner did not need this bundle simply to attempt the use case.

Why it was outside the Oculus Store
Contemporary coverage reported that pornographic apps were not accepted in the official Oculus Store. That distinction matters: hardware compatibility is not the same as manufacturer approval. Adult services could instead use websites, browsers, downloads, unofficial applications or other distribution methods. Réalité-Virtuelle.com’s coverage discusses the reported store restriction and BaDoinkVR bundle.
Privacy and security questions
No source provides a complete security audit of Porn in a Box, but a preconfigured adult-content device deserved the same caution as any unofficial software package.

- Check whether software came from a trusted provider and whether the device can be factory-reset.
- Assume browser history, downloaded files, subscriptions and payment records may reveal sensitive activity.
- Do not enter payment details into unknown sideloaded apps or unverified websites.
- Before using a second-hand unit, remove accounts and downloads and perform a factory reset.
A reset or software change could remove local videos or the custom launcher. Preloading should never be interpreted as a promise of lifetime streaming, future downloads or continuing account access.
Was it legal?
The available reporting describes an adult product marketed to adults; it does not establish legality everywhere. Rules vary by country and region and can cover age, consent, licensing, obscenity, importing, resale and redistribution. Buyers also remain subject to the content provider’s terms. Check local law and those terms rather than treating the bundle as universally legal.

Why the story mattered—and why it is historical
The product illustrated two 2019 market realities: standalone VR had become accessible without a PC, and platform policies left room for specialist distributors. BaDoinkVR’s differentiator was convenience and packaging, not exclusive Oculus technology.
Oculus Go is now a discontinued, obsolete platform compared with newer standalone headsets. App availability, account services and the bundled provider may no longer work as they did at launch. Current availability and support should be verified independently; this historical bundle should not be treated as a current Oculus recommendation.

Bottom line
Porn in a Box was real, but “Oculus released a new Go that comes with VR porn” is inaccurate. BaDoinkVR reportedly sold a regular 32GB Oculus Go with custom software and adult content for $299.99 in 2019—roughly $100 above the Go’s original $199 starting price. The premium bought convenience, not a special Oculus headset or an official adult-content edition.
