That does not establish that it is universally more private or more powerful than Notion, OneNote, or Obsidian. The practical difference is deployment: with self-hosting, you take on responsibility for operating the service, while a hosted setup leaves more of that work to a provider.
Why AppFlowy fits this Notion-alternative question
AppFlowy describes itself as an AI workspace for projects, wikis, teams, documents, and databases. Its documentation calls it “an open-source alternative to Notion” and says users are in charge of their data and customizations. That makes it a plausible option for people seeking a workspace they can run or customize, rather than simply another hosted notes app.
Those are AppFlowy’s own product statements, not independent security audits or comparative tests. They support a case for considering its deployment choices; they do not prove that every feature is stronger than Notion’s or that every setup is more secure.
What “more private” means in practice
AppFlowy says it can be deployed on your infrastructure, in your cloud, or in an air-gapped environment, and that you control where data is stored and processed. Those options can matter if your requirements include choosing the infrastructure or limiting network exposure. The actual privacy outcome depends on the deployment, configuration, access controls, and who can administer the environment.

Self-hosting shifts operational responsibility as well as control. Someone must maintain hosting, apply updates, manage accounts and permissions, make backups, and plan recovery if the service or its storage fails. If nobody can reliably do that work, a self-hosted service may be a worse practical fit than a managed workspace.
For a hosted deployment, ask where data is stored and processed and what controls the provider offers. For self-hosting, decide who owns maintenance and recovery before migrating important work. The right choice depends on your threat model and operating capacity, not just the word “private.”

Is AppFlowy more powerful than Notion, OneNote, or Obsidian?
The available product information does not support a feature-by-feature verdict against Notion, OneNote, or Obsidian. AppFlowy’s stated scope—projects, wikis, teams, documents, and databases—suggests a broad workspace rather than a narrow notes-only tool, but that is not evidence that it outperforms those products for a particular workflow.
Compare the tasks you actually depend on: shared editing, database structures, linked information, offline access, customization, and how your team handles permissions. Verify those workflows in the version and deployment you plan to use. A feature that exists in a product may still differ by platform or hosting arrangement.

Platforms and collaboration
AppFlowy’s official site lists macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, and web availability, and says it syncs across devices. Treat this as vendor-published availability: check the current app and feature support for the exact platforms your team uses before choosing a deployment.
If collaboration is central, test the real workflow with colleagues rather than assuming that an available app or database feature behaves identically across clients. Check editing, access permissions, sharing, and how changes appear on the devices people use.

How to assess a move from Notion
Notion says users can export a page, database, or entire workspace at any time. Its documented formats include PDF, CSV, and HTML. An export gives you material to evaluate; it is not a promise that another tool will reconstruct every relation, layout, or collaboration feature.

- Export representative content from Notion. Use Notion’s export guidance at Export your content. Include examples of the pages, files, and databases your team actually relies on.
- Try the material in the intended AppFlowy setup. Test it in the hosted or self-managed deployment you expect to use. Do not assume that an export format alone establishes import compatibility.
- Check what matters before committing. Inspect formatting, files, database relationships, and the collaboration workflows you need. Record what transferred cleanly and what would need to be rebuilt.
- Plan ongoing operations if self-hosting. Assign owners for updates, backups, access controls, and recovery before putting important work there.
- Ask about migration help if needed. AppFlowy’s site says it offers migration assistance and will not touch customer data during that migration. Confirm the current terms directly with AppFlowy before relying on that service.
Who should consider AppFlowy?
- Consider it if choosing the hosting environment, customizing an open-source workspace, or keeping deployment under your own operational control is important to you.
- Be cautious about self-hosting if no one can take responsibility for maintaining the service, its backups, and its recovery plan.
- Test before switching if your work depends on complex databases, particular formatting, or team collaboration that must survive migration.
- Keep the comparison task-specific: the available evidence does not establish a general winner over Notion, OneNote, or Obsidian.
