A local language model reportedly handled about 90% of one XDA writer’s former Claude and ChatGPT prompts during a month-long trial on an iPhone 16. That is a personal estimate, not a benchmark showing that phone-based models generally match cloud assistants. The reported wins were mostly everyday tasks—such as rewording email, explaining unfamiliar words, and doing quick calculations—while more demanding questions could still benefit from a cloud model.
What the reported 90% does—and does not—mean
The figure comes from a summary of an XDA Developers article surfaced by TheOutpost.AI in 2026. The original article was not accessible for independent verification, and the summary does not provide the prompt list, denominator, scoring rules, or a breakdown by task. So “90%” should be read as the writer’s estimate of how often local models were sufficient for that writer’s own former prompts, not as a measured success rate for other people or phones.

It also does not establish that the local models produced answers equal in quality to Claude or ChatGPT. A prompt can be “handled” because a short, usable answer was enough; that is different from a controlled comparison of accuracy, reasoning, or completeness. The report is useful as an account of one person’s workflow, not as proof of general equivalence.

Which tasks reportedly worked well locally
The surfaced summary describes the strongest fit as routine tasks that do not require extensive reasoning or live information:
#1 Best Overall
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Rewording an email or other short text.
- Explaining an unfamiliar term.
- Answering quick factual questions.
- Converting units, splitting a bill, or calculating time-zone differences.
These examples are the secondary summary’s account of the XDA report; they are not independently checked prompt-by-prompt results. They nevertheless illustrate why a small on-device model can be useful: many everyday requests need a quick transformation or straightforward answer rather than a long chain of reasoning.
Phone and model configurations in the account
The summary identifies the test phone as a base-model iPhone 16 with 8 GB of unified memory. It says the writer used models in the 2-billion-to-4-billion-parameter range in quantized formats. Quantization reduces the model’s storage and memory demands, but a smaller model may be less capable on difficult tasks. Performance also depends on the phone, model build, context length, and app implementation; the account does not establish a universal minimum phone specification.

| Qwen 3.5 2B, Q4_0 | About 32 tokens per second on short prompts; above 20 tokens per second on longer inputs | Reported for the iPhone 16 trial in TheOutpost.AI’s 2026 summary of XDA Developers; no standardized test protocol is given. |
| Gemma 4 E2B | About 26 tokens per second | Reported for the same trial; prompt conditions and measurement method are not stated. |
| Qwen 3.5 4B, Q3_K_M | About 13 tokens per second | Reported for the same trial; the summary says the larger model reasoned more sharply but gives no standardized comparison. |
Tokens per second describe text generation, not whether an answer is correct or how long the app takes to load a model or process a request. A faster small model may feel better for quick tasks; a slower, larger one may be worth trying when answer quality matters more. The reported figures alone cannot tell you which will be better on your phone.

When a local model is a good fit—and when to switch
Try a local model when your request is self-contained and a concise response is enough: polishing a message, defining a term, or working through a simple conversion. For complex, multi-step reasoning, or questions that depend on current events, prices, policies, or other changing facts, use a cloud assistant or verify the answer with a current source. The account itself says complex queries can still benefit from cloud models; its summary does not report a controlled head-to-head test.
- Choose local first when offline access matters or the prompt is routine and does not need fresh information.
- Choose cloud or verify independently when the stakes are high, the answer must be current, or the task requires stronger reasoning than a small model can reliably provide.
- Compare on your own prompts rather than relying on a single percentage: note whether the answer is usable, whether it needs correction, and how long it takes on your device.
How Google AI Edge Gallery fits into the workflow
Google’s AI Edge Gallery project describes an experimental app for running supported AI models on a device. Its repository lists AI Chat, Ask Image, Audio Scribe, and Agent Skills, and lists Android 12+ and iOS 17+ as minimum operating-system versions. Those requirements and features can change, so check the project’s current instructions for your platform before installing.

The project guide describes an experimental Android app with model selection, chat, image questions, and prompt experimentation. It says local use can continue without an internet connection after a model has been loaded. Offline operation does not mean there is no setup: obtaining the app or downloading a model may require an internet connection, and the available models and features can depend on platform support. Do not assume every listed capability works offline in every configuration.

- Check the current Google AI Edge Gallery project instructions for your operating system and device compatibility.
- Install the app and download a supported model while you have a connection; model downloads are separate from later offline use.
- Try representative prompts from your own routine in AI Chat, and assess both answer quality and response time.
- Test any image, audio, or other feature you need separately; app-level support does not guarantee identical model or platform support.
- Once the model is loaded, test whether your chosen workflow continues to work with the device offline.
How to decide whether a local LLM is worth using
The practical question is not whether a phone model replaces every cloud assistant. It is whether it is good enough for the particular requests you want to handle locally. Use a small set of real prompts and judge the trade-offs that matter to you:
Best Value
- Charger NOT Included, 6.7" Super AMOLED FHD+, 90Hz Refresh Rate, 385 ppi, 800 nits (HBM), 1080x2340px, 5000mAh Battery
- 128GB, 4GB RAM, microSDXC, Exynos 1330 (5nm), Octa-Core, Mali-G68 MP2 or Mali-G57 MC2 GPU
- Rear Camera: 50MP, f/1.8 (wide) + 5MP, f/2.2 (ultrawide) + 2MP, f/2.4 (macro), LED flash, panorama, HDR; Front Camera: 13MP, f/2.0, Android 14, up to 6 major Android upgrades, One UI 6.1
- 3G: HSDPA 850/900/1700(AWS)/1900/2100; 4G LTE: 1/2/3/4/5/7/12/13/14/20/25/26/28/29/30/38/39/40/41/48/66/71, 5G: 2/5/25/41/66/71/77/78 SA/NSA/Sub6/mmWave - Nano-SIM + eSIM
- US Model – Global Connectivity – Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.
- Task fit: Are your prompts mostly short transformations and simple questions, or do they demand detailed reasoning?
- Answer quality: Does the model give a usable answer without corrections, and can you verify important claims?
- Speed: Does generation feel responsive on your actual phone and chosen model?
- Device limits: Is the model supported, and does it run within your phone’s available memory and context capacity?
- Connectivity: Do you need answers while offline, or access to current web information?
- Input and workflow: Do you need text only, or image, audio, document, or agent-style features—and are those supported in your specific app setup?
The month-long account suggests that local models can cover a meaningful share of ordinary prompts for at least one user. It does not show what share they will cover for you. The most reliable way to find out is to test the tasks you actually perform and keep a cloud option for requests that require more capability or current information.
