The installation, coordinated by medical-equipment distributor Medim, is designed to document operating-room workflow and share live status with perioperative teams—not to score individual surgeons or nurses.
What is being installed at the Gdańsk hospital?
Vetro is an institutional operating-room workflow system from London/US-European health-tech startup VitVio. UCK is described as the first Polish hospital to take the platform. The initial rollout covers selected rooms, with a possible expansion across the operating block later. No public source has yet reported performance results from the Gdańsk installation.

UCK is a large site, with 1,241 beds and 4,834 employees according to The Next Web’s 2026 report. Those figures indicate the scale of the environment in which the pilot is taking place, but they do not show how many rooms or cases will use Vetro at launch.
How Vetro’s AI cameras are intended to work
A live spatial model of the room
VitVio says Vetro combines multiple cameras, ambient sensing and 3D spatial intelligence to maintain a live geometric model of an operating theatre. The system interprets what is happening in the room rather than acting as a conventional security camera feed.

Its software is designed to recognise milestones such as wheels-in, induction, incision and closure. It also considers room and equipment context, so the timeline can show when a case starts, which phase it has reached and whether a delay is developing.
Status for the wider perioperative team
Vetro can flag delays and share case status with perioperative teams. VitVio’s product information says workflow data can be written to hospital systems including Epic and Cerner, allowing information gathered in the room to connect with existing electronic-record or perioperative workflows. Which systems UCK will connect, and whether every advertised integration will be enabled there, have not been publicly specified.

Is it monitoring surgeons?
VitVio presents Vetro as team-level workflow documentation. COO Maks Kozarzewski said: “Vetro records a timeline of each case: the same milestones nurses already log by hand, such as patient entry, incision and closure. It doesn’t score or rank individual staff.”
That distinction matters. A timestamp for incision can help a department understand room utilisation or locate a delay; a score attached to a named clinician would be a personnel-evaluation system. The company says Vetro’s outputs describe cases, phases and equipment, not individual performance. Whether a hospital keeps those boundaries in practice depends on its access controls, policies and how managers use the resulting data.

What happens to the video and patient privacy?
VitVio describes privacy-by-architecture: faces and personal identities are not required for the workflow model, and original footage is generally discarded soon after processing. Tech.eu reports that processing occurs on the hospital side, with pixelation and deletion of original footage. It says de-identified data is usually retained for seven days and that a small proportion of anonymised clips may be kept to verify detection.
Those retention and processing details are company-reported arrangements, not an independent audit. Public information remains incomplete on the exact hosting design, who can access outputs, how exceptions are handled, and the controls that prevent workflow data from being repurposed for staff evaluation. A hospital considering expansion would need those points documented in its own governance and procurement process.

What UCK is expected to gain
The immediate benefit is a consistent, automatically generated timeline of each case. Instead of relying only on handwritten milestones or retrospective reconstruction, perioperative staff could see whether a room is in induction, surgery, closure or turnover and receive an alert when the observed sequence suggests a delay.

VitVio has not published Gdańsk measurements for operating-room utilisation, turnaround time, patient safety, waiting lists or staffing efficiency. The company’s COO described its deployment approach this way: “We prove results in their own rooms and improve multiple challenges they face in the OR before asking them to scale.” That makes the Polish installation a local implementation and evidence-building exercise, not proof that the platform has already delivered a quantified improvement at UCK.

Why the company is pursuing hospitals now
The Next Web reported an EU-wide shortage of about 1.2 million doctors, nurses and midwives, while noting that the figure was contextual reporting rather than a cited primary statistic. Automation that reduces manual documentation or makes room status visible could therefore appeal to hospitals operating under staffing pressure. It does not replace clinical judgement, and the shortage figure should not be read as a measured justification for Vetro at UCK.
VitVio has reported $10 million in total funding, including an $8 million seed round closed in October 2025. Tech.eu independently reported the funding total in 2026. Financing indicates the startup’s ability to build and deploy the product; it is not evidence of clinical or operational effectiveness.
Regulation and the unresolved governance line
The central policy issue is whether a workflow system remains separate from employee surveillance. The Next Web reported that the EU AI Act category covering systems intended to monitor and evaluate workers’ performance was delayed until December 2027. That reported timetable does not by itself determine how UCK may deploy Vetro, what data it may retain or which internal approvals are required.

Hospitals also need a way to test detection accuracy in their own rooms and to correct a timeline when the system misreads an event.
What is known about the Polish rollout
| Item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Hospital | University Clinical Centre Gdańsk (UCK) |
| Initial scope | Selected operating rooms, with possible later expansion across the operating block |
| Installation coordinator | Medim, a Polish medical-equipment distributor |
| Workflow milestones cited | Wheels-in, induction, incision and closure |
| UCK scale | 1,241 beds and 4,834 employees, as reported by The Next Web in 2026 |
| VitVio funding | $10 million total, including an $8 million seed round closed in October 2025 |
The concrete outcome for Gdańsk will depend on what the hospital measures after installation. Until those results are published, Vetro should be understood as an AI-assisted workflow and documentation platform being piloted in Polish operating theatres, with privacy safeguards and non-surveillance claims that remain subject to local controls and verification.
