Yes, you can carry a Linux desktop on a USB drive and boot it on other computers—but “the same on any PC” is too broad. A standard live USB can run Linux without changing the computer’s internal drive. A persistent live USB can retain supported files, packages and settings. A full installation on external storage behaves more like a normal desktop. In every case, firmware mode, processor architecture, graphics and Wi-Fi drivers, Secure Boot policy and USB-boot support determine whether the experience transfers cleanly.
What a portable Linux desktop actually is
A bootable USB contains a Linux image that the computer loads instead of its installed operating system. Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop documentation describes this as a way to “Test out the Ubuntu Desktop experience without touching your PC configuration” and to “Boot into Ubuntu on a borrowed machine.” The host’s internal installation can remain unchanged while you use the USB session.

| Approach | What it does | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard live USB | Boots an ISO and leaves the host installation alone | Testing, recovery and borrowed computers | Changes normally disappear after reboot unless persistence is added |
| Persistent live USB | Adds a persistence file or partition for supported live images | Portable settings, packages and files | Distro-specific support and overlay limits |
| Full Linux installation on external USB | Installs a conventional system to removable storage | A more complete desktop with normal package management | More sensitive to firmware, bootloader, drivers and flash wear |
| Ventoy multi-ISO USB | Stores several ISO files and presents a boot menu; persistence can be mapped for supported images | A rescue toolkit or several distributions on one drive | Compatibility and persistence vary by ISO |
Persistence is what makes the drive feel like your computer
A normal live image is not automatically a saved desktop. Without a persistence layer, installed applications, changed settings and files in the live environment generally vanish when you restart.

For a persistent live USB, the distribution must support persistence and the drive must be configured with a persistence file or partition. Ventoy’s documentation says that, for supported Linux live ISOs, persistence can retain installed packages, Wi-Fi profiles and files across reboots. That support is image-specific; an ISO that boots in live mode may not support every persistence feature, and the overlay can have practical size limits.
A full external installation avoids the live-overlay model. It gives you a regular Linux filesystem, normal updates and package management, but it also installs a bootloader and is more exposed to differences between computers. It can be the better choice when you need a long-lived working environment rather than a portable test or recovery tool.

Capacity, speed and durability decisions
Capacity
Canonical lists an 8GB USB stick or larger as the minimum for its Ubuntu Desktop boot media. That minimum is for creating the installer, not a comfortable persistent workstation. The ISO, persistence area, updates and personal files all compete for space, so choose substantially more capacity when you expect to save packages and data.

There is no authoritative, general cross-PC speed or lifespan figure for USB Linux desktops. In practice, a persistent session writes more often than a read-only live session, while a full installation can generate still more writes through updates, caches and logs. Use a reputable, high-capacity drive, keep important files backed up and treat the removable device as expendable.

Encryption
A portable drive can be lost or copied. A live image, persistence area or external installation should not be assumed to be encrypted merely because Linux is running. If the distribution and installation method offer encryption, enable it during setup and protect the passphrase separately. Test recovery before storing irreplaceable data.
How to build a persistent Linux USB
- Choose the drive. Start with a reputable USB drive. Ubuntu’s documented minimum is 8GB; a persistent desktop needs additional headroom for the operating system, persistence data and updates.
- Download the ISO. Get the image from the distribution’s official download page. Verify its checksum when the project publishes one so a damaged or altered download is not written to the drive.
- Write the image. Use Ubuntu’s Disks utility, Rufus on Windows, balenaEtcher or another supported image writer. Select the correct removable drive. The Ubuntu documentation warns: “Back up your files on the USB stick. This process will overwrite and destroy all data stored there.”
- Configure persistence. Use an ISO and method that document persistence. Create or assign the persistence file or partition, then allocate enough space for the packages, profiles and files you intend to keep. Ventoy can map persistence for supported Linux live ISOs; follow its per-ISO configuration rather than assuming every image works identically.
- Set the boot target. Shut down the computer, insert the USB and open the one-time boot menu—often
F12, though the key varies by manufacturer. Select the USB device. Ubuntu’s documentation notes that Ventoy displays the image files stored on the drive so you can choose one at startup. - Verify the saved state. In the first session, create a test file, change a setting and, if supported, install a small package. Reboot from the USB and confirm what survived before relying on the drive.
- Test every intended computer. Check boot mode, graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, suspend, display scaling and external monitors on each machine. Keep a backup elsewhere.
Why one USB does not boot identically everywhere
Firmware mode
Computers may boot removable media in UEFI mode or legacy/CSM mode. A system installed or prepared for one mode may not start correctly when the firmware is set to the other. Some machines also hide USB boot until it is enabled or selected in the firmware setup.

Processor architecture
Ubuntu documents support for PC hardware and older Intel Macs. Apple Silicon Macs are a separate case: they require the Ubuntu Asahi community project, and support depends on the specific Mac model. Therefore the defensible promise is “portable across compatible x86-64 PCs,” not “identical on every PC.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSecure Boot
One computer may accept the distribution’s signed bootloader while another has a different Secure Boot policy or refuses an unsigned component. If the USB fails before Linux starts, check the firmware’s Secure Boot and USB-boot settings rather than repeatedly rewriting the image. Do not disable security controls on a managed computer without the owner’s permission.

Hardware drivers
The same desktop can load different graphics, wireless, touchpad and audio drivers on different machines. A proprietary graphics driver installed for one computer can reduce portability to another. Test the basic functions you need instead of assuming that a successful boot means every device works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ventoy versus a single-image USB
A single-image USB is simpler when you always use one distribution. Ventoy is useful when one physical drive must hold several ISO files: at boot, it presents a menu and lets you select an image. Persistence can be added for supported images, but the mapping and compatibility are not universal. A multi-ISO rescue drive therefore improves recovery flexibility, while a dedicated persistent installation can be easier to maintain as a daily environment.
Troubleshooting common failures
- The computer ignores the USB: reopen the one-time boot menu, confirm USB boot is enabled, try another port and check whether the firmware is in the expected UEFI or legacy mode.
- It boots but changes disappear: you likely created a standard live USB, or persistence is unsupported or misconfigured. Rebuild it with a documented persistence method and verify with a test file.
- Graphics are broken or the display is blank: try the distribution’s safe or basic graphics option, then test the drive on another machine. A driver that works on one GPU may not work on another.
- Wi-Fi or audio is missing: use temporary wired networking or another adapter if available, install only drivers appropriate to that hardware and retest before moving the drive between machines.
- The drive becomes unreliable: copy off important data immediately, recreate the media from a verified ISO and replace the USB if errors return. Removable flash storage is easy to lose, overwrite or damage.
The practical promise
A USB Linux desktop is an excellent way to test Linux, repair computers, carry a prepared workspace or keep several recovery images together. The reliable expectation is portability across compatible machines, with a short compatibility check on each PC—not a guarantee that one installation will look and behave identically everywhere. Canonical’s Ubuntu page was updated on October 13, 2026; its 8GB requirement and overwrite warning apply to the documented Ubuntu boot-media process.
