A Keurig Coffee Maker Was Linked to 1TB of Network Traffic in 10 Days—but It Wasn’t Confirmed Internet Uploads

A UniFi network screenshot reportedly associated 1,008.45GB of upload traffic with a Keurig K-Supreme SMART coffee maker over 10 days and 9 hours. That figure is alarming, but it did not prove the brewer sent 1TB of data over the internet: the owner said most of the traffic appeared to stay on the local network. No packet capture established what the traffic contained or what caused it.

What the network report showed

Tom’s Hardware reported the incident on October 8, 2026, based on a device owner’s public post and follow-up. A UniFi screenshot showed 1,008.45GB uploaded and 9.94GB downloaded by a device identified as Keurig during 10 days and 9 hours. Tom’s Hardware’s account says the owner later concluded that the dashboard had not demonstrated a 1TB transfer to the internet; most of the traffic appeared to be local-network traffic.

That distinction matters. A router’s device-level traffic counter can record network activity without, by itself, showing whether the bytes went to a public internet destination or another device inside the home. The screenshot raised a question about an unusually large volume of traffic associated with the brewer; it was not proof of an internet upload of that size.

Which appliance was involved—and why it connects

The device was identified as a Keurig K-Supreme SMART with BrewID. The model includes connected functions: app control for remote brewing, remote on/off and scheduled brewing, plus Alexa and Google Home integration. BrewID uses Wi-Fi to recognize Keurig-made pods and apply recommended settings. These features explain why the coffee maker connects to a network, but the incident reporting does not show that any particular feature caused the spike.

Cybernews reports that the brewer uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and WPA2-PSK. Those are reported specifications, not an explanation for the traffic. Cybernews’ account covers the same underlying incident, so it is corroboration of the reporting rather than a separate measurement.

What caused the traffic—and what data was sent?

Neither the cause nor the contents of the traffic have been established. The owner suspected a bug, but did not capture packets for analysis. The available reporting does not show that the coffee maker was spying, hacked, mining cryptocurrency or sending personal information. A traffic-volume counter alone cannot identify the data’s contents.

The incident also does not establish a confirmed technical explanation from Keurig. Without packet-level evidence, it is not possible to tell whether the counter reflected a software problem, local-network activity, a measurement issue or something else.

How unusual is the reported amount?

Figures from other connected appliances provide context, not a direct baseline for this Keurig. The products, usage patterns and measurement methods differ, and the Keurig report’s local-versus-internet distinction remains unresolved.

The reported UniFi counter is far larger than these examples, but they cannot be compared as if they measured the same appliance, traffic destination or use conditions.

How to check whether a device is using your network

Start with your router’s or network controller’s management interface. The exact labels vary by system; look for a connected-device list, per-device usage or traffic history, and any view that separates local-network traffic from internet-bound traffic. Check the device identity carefully, since routers may use a manufacturer name, a user-assigned label or an unfamiliar device name.

  • Compare the device’s upload and download totals over a defined time window, rather than relying on a single snapshot.
  • Check whether the interface distinguishes local traffic from traffic sent to the internet. If it does not, a large upload counter does not reveal where the data went.
  • Look for repeated spikes and note when they occur, such as after a reboot or during app-controlled use. A pattern can help narrow the question, but it does not identify traffic contents.
  • If the router supports it, place smart appliances on a guest or IoT network separated from computers and phones. Network isolation can limit access between devices, but it does not diagnose or repair a traffic anomaly.

What the owner tried

In the reported case, the owner rebooted the coffee maker and moved it to a segregated VLAN. Tom’s Hardware says the traffic issue did not recur during the period described, while characterizing the result as temporary. This is one owner’s account, not a controlled test or proof that rebooting or VLAN separation will resolve the same issue elsewhere.
