A fossilized tyrannosaurid foot bone bears 16 tooth marks that researchers interpret as evidence that a smaller tyrannosaurid fed on a much larger one. The most cautious explanation is scavenging after the larger animal had died—not a record of a juvenile killing it. Cannibalism is possible if both animals belonged to the same species, but the fossil does not settle that question.
What the fossil shows
The evidence comes from BDM 124, a partial left second metatarsal—a bone in the foot—found in Montana’s Judith River Formation. In a 2026 paper in Evolving Earth, Josephine Nielsen, Denver Fowler, Taia Wyenberg-Henzler, Aase Roland Jacobsen, and Christof Pearce describe 16 distinct tooth marks on the bone. Their analysis combines a Category-Modifier classification system, high-resolution 3D surface scanning, and measurements of the marks’ shapes and spacing. The authors conclude that the traces are consistent with feeding by a small tyrannosaurid on a significantly larger one. [c001]

This is trace-fossil evidence: the bone preserves marks attributed to feeding, not a scene of the two animals together. The study supports an interpretation of what happened to the carcass, but it does not show how the larger animal died or identify its killer.
Was it a baby T. rex?
“Baby” is an attention-grabbing shorthand, not an established age for the animal associated with BDM 124. The source material does not provide a precise age for it, and the study’s conclusion is framed around a smaller tyrannosaurid—not a newly hatched animal.

A 2026 discussion in the Journal of Paleontology estimates the smaller animal at about 5.8 metres long and the larger adult at 10–12 metres. These are estimated lengths reported in that discussion, not direct measurements of living animals. They suggest a substantial size difference, but they do not establish that the smaller animal was a baby. [c002]
The evidence also does not establish that either animal was Tyrannosaurus rex. “Tyrannosaurid” refers to the broader family; the paper allows that the animals could have been the same species or closely related tyrannosaurids.

Why researchers favor scavenging over a kill
Tooth marks can be evidence of feeding, but they do not automatically mean an animal was attacked and killed by the tooth-maker. For BDM 124, the authors interpret the mark placement and morphology, along with the lack of healing, as consistent with feeding after the larger animal had died. They consider scavenging the most likely explanation. [c001] [c002]

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Feeding rather than an injury: The researchers identify the traces as tooth marks and analyze their form and arrangement as feeding evidence.
- Scavenging rather than a demonstrated kill: The marks are interpreted as late-stage carcass feeding; they do not preserve the moment of death.
- Smaller feeder, larger carcass: Mark dimensions and spacing support the inference that the feeder was smaller than the animal whose foot bone was marked.
How tooth marks can identify a feeder
Scientists compare the dimensions and spacing of fossil marks with tooth patterns and use surface measurements to characterize their shapes. In the BDM 124 study, 3D scanning and morphometric analysis helped researchers evaluate the marks’ geometry; the authors say the size and spacing fit a small tyrannosaurid. That is an inference from preserved traces, not a direct identification of an individual animal.

Attribution can remain uncertain even when marks are clearly related to feeding. The 2026 Journal of Paleontology discussion considers a different fossil, TMP 2022.007.0040, whose tooth-mark maker cannot be identified with certainty. If its maker were Albertosaurus, the feeding would count as cannibalism, but other possible makers are considered. [c002]
Does this count as cannibalism?
Only if the feeder and the animal it ate belonged to the same species. The BDM 124 interpretation is compatible with a smaller tyrannosaurid scavenging a larger member of its own species, but it also allows a closely related taxon. “Possible cannibalistic scavenging” is therefore more accurate than saying the fossil proves cannibalism.

Other studies have documented tyrannosaur feeding traces, but they involve different fossils and do not add marks to BDM 124.

- 2010: A PLOS ONE study described tooth marks on four Tyrannosaurus specimens and attributed them to other Tyrannosaurus. The authors interpreted the traces as feeding and argued that opportunistic scavenging was likely. They discussed whether smaller marks came from juvenile or subadult animals, while also considering whether they could have been left by smaller teeth farther back in the jaw of a large individual. [c004]
- 2019: A separate study compared marks on a vertebra with tooth dimensions and spacing across Tyrannosaurus growth stages, attributing them to a juvenile T. rex. Its comparison included the specimen “Jane,” estimated histologically at 11–12 years old; that age belongs to Jane, not the animal associated with BDM 124. [c005]
