1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a portable air purifier by matching its clean-air delivery rate (CADR) to the room you will actually use it in, then check filtration type and noise at the fan speed you expect to run. A HEPA label describes particle filtration; it does not make an undersized purifier suitable for a larger space or mean the unit removes gases.
How to choose the right purifier size for your room
Measure the room’s length and width in feet, then multiply them to get its floor area. For an open-plan space, include the connected area you expect the purifier to clean rather than sizing it for only one corner. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) room-size chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling; for higher ceilings, choose greater capacity.

For rooms with 8-foot ceilings, EPA’s guide gives these minimum CADR estimates:
| Room area | Minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq ft | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq ft | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 390 cfm |
These are estimates for the stated ceiling height, not a guarantee of a particular result in every home. For wildfire cleaner-air rooms, EPA gives separate advice: choose a smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. Treat that as wildfire-room guidance, not as a replacement for the general room-size chart or a universal performance guarantee. See the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home and EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance.

What CADR tells you—and what it does not
CADR, or clean-air delivery rate, indicates how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air for specific particle categories. It is commonly listed in cubic feet per minute (cfm); a higher figure indicates more filtered particle air and is useful when comparing units for a room. The standard categories are tobacco smoke, dust, and pollen. EPA says tobacco-smoke CADR represents the smallest particles of those three, so it is the relevant figure to examine when comparing performance for smaller particles.
CADR is typically measured at the purifier’s highest fan speed. If you plan to run the unit more quietly on a lower setting, the top-speed CADR alone cannot tell you how much air it will clean at that setting. Check whether the manufacturer provides performance and noise information by speed, and consider whether the lower setting will suit your room and needs. EPA explains these measures in its consumer guide and its page on air cleaners and HVAC filters.
Is a HEPA filter enough?
HEPA describes particle filtration, not the purifier’s capacity for your room or its ability to remove gases. EPA says portable cleaners often achieve high CADR using HEPA filters. For reducing airborne virus particles, EPA recommends a correctly sized cleaner that meets at least one of these criteria:

This is selection guidance, not a promise that every HEPA unit performs identically or prevents infection. Room sizing still matters. EPA’s recommendations are detailed in Air Cleaners and HVAC Filters in Homes.
Particle filtration is not gas or odor removal
CADR measures particle cleaning; it is not a rating for gases, odors, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If those are your concern, look for activated carbon or another filter designed to adsorb gases. EPA notes that a large amount of activated carbon can be effective, but portable cleaners do not have a widely used gas-filter performance rating system. A purifier’s particle CADR therefore cannot substantiate a claim about VOC removal.
EPA also says research has not shown plasma, photocatalytic oxidation, or UV light to be effective at removing gases in portable residential cleaners. And if a musty smell comes from mold caused by moisture, a purifier is not remediation: address the moisture source and clean up the mold. Filtration may capture some airborne particles, but it does not fix the underlying problem. These distinctions are covered in the EPA guide.

How loud will it be on the setting you use?
Higher fan speeds generally move more air and improve cleaning performance, but they also increase noise and airflow. EPA says a noise rating around 50 dB is roughly comparable to the operating noise of a modern refrigerator; this is a reference point, not a universal comfort threshold. A published noise figure is useful only if you know the fan setting it describes.

If noise might keep you from running the purifier, compare noise at the speed you expect to use and weigh it against the cleaning capacity you need. A low noise rating at a quiet setting does not establish that the unit will deliver its highest CADR at that setting. EPA’s guidance is to consider a low published noise rating if noise might prevent regular use; see its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Placement, ozone, and filter upkeep
Place it where people spend time
Use the purifier in a room where people spend time, and keep its airflow unobstructed, including by curtains. If the airflow creates an uncomfortable draft, redirect it rather than blocking the intake or outlet.

When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Avoid ozone-generating cleaners
Do not buy a cleaner intended to produce ozone: EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant. It notes that some electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, UV lights without adequate lamp coatings, and plasma cleaners may have ozone-emission potential. EPA points to AHAM and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as organizations that maintain lists of cleaners tested to emit little or no ozone; that wording does not mean zero emissions. For a wildfire cleaner-air room, EPA specifically advises using a CARB-certified cleaner. See the EPA home guide, its ozone-generator guidance, and its cleaner-air-room guidance.
Plan for replacement filters
Filters need regular replacement, but EPA does not establish one universal replacement interval. Check the purifier’s instructions, identify the compatible replacement-filter model, and account for ongoing availability and cost before buying.
Compare purifiers on the details that affect your use
Use the same room and operating assumptions when comparing units. EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models, so these are selection criteria rather than an EPA product ranking.

- Noise by speed: Look for the setting associated with each noise rating, especially the one you expect to use most.
- Filter type: Confirm the description of the particle filter, including whether it is designated HEPA.
- Gas filtration: If odors or VOCs matter, check for activated carbon or another gas-adsorbent filter and look for supporting performance information; particle CADR does not rate gas removal.
- Ozone information: Check relevant ozone-emissions listings or certifications and avoid devices intended to generate ozone.
- Ownership: Verify the replacement-filter model and whether it is available for the purifier.
ENERGY STAR labeling on a portable purifier indicates energy efficiency, not air-cleaning effectiveness, according to the EPA guide.
When an HVAC filter may be a better complement
For a home’s central heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system, EPA recommends a filter rated at least MERV 13, or as high as the system can accommodate. Confirm compatibility with the system manufacturer or a qualified professional; installing a filter the system cannot handle is not a safe shortcut. HVAC filtration only occurs while the system runs, and extending runtime can increase energy costs and affect humidity control. A portable cleaner and a compatible HVAC filter address filtration in different ways, so choose according to where and when you need cleaner air.
