The public evidence is enough to identify its construction and variants, but not enough to declare it supportive, durable or good value from independent testing: CHOICE withholds the model’s expert scores and detailed results from its public page. If you are considering old stock or a used unit, treat the exact size, feel, age, condition, sale terms and warranty as more important than the historical retail claims.
What the Conforma Essence is
The Conforma Essence was sold as an A.H. Beard King Koil mattress made in Australia. CHOICE’s public product record classifies it as an instore-retail spring mattress and identifies a queen model with a claimed firm feel. That record now marks the model as discontinued, so a listing you find today is most likely old inventory, a private resale or a page that has not been removed rather than evidence of normal current production.

A.H. Beard’s current King Koil collection page provides context about the broader collection and names retailers that carry King Koil products, but it does not establish that the Essence remains in that range. Do not assume that a retailer carrying another King Koil model can order an Essence, or that a current King Koil guarantee automatically applies to this older model.
This is an evidence-limited review. No physical test was performed for this article, and no named expert quotation about the Essence was located. Product descriptions from Harvey Norman and an archived Bedbuyer page are useful for identifying the advertised build and options, but they are not a substitute for laboratory measurements or a current inspection.

Documented specifications
The clearest model-level figures come from CHOICE’s public listing for the queen version. The table separates those recorded specifications from claims made in historical retail copy.

The specification set is therefore useful for checking whether a found mattress is the same model, but it should not be read as a performance ranking. A 28 cm height or a stated spring density cannot, by itself, tell you whether two people will feel each other’s movement, whether edges will hold up or whether the surface will suit your body.
Firm, medium and other variants
Historical Harvey Norman material describes four feel choices: plush, medium, firm and super firm. It also lists single, king single, double, queen and king sizes. Bedbuyer’s archived review concerns the Firm version and identifies a queen recommended retail price, while CHOICE’s public record is specifically for a queen with a claimed firm feel. Those references do not prove that every size was offered in every feel, or that the materials were identical across the range.

- Read the law label and sewn tags. Look for the model name, size and any firmness designation rather than relying on a seller’s memory.
- Ask for a photograph of the label. A clear image can reveal whether “firm” refers to the mattress model, a retailer option or a seller’s description.
- Measure the mattress. The queen listing is 28 cm high, but a cover, topper or long-term compression can change the measurement you see.
- Match the support unit and cover. If the label is missing, ask for the original receipt or delivery paperwork; otherwise treat the model and feel as unverified.
Do not infer that the Firm version will feel the same as the Medium, Plush or Super Firm version. Comfort layers and quilting can change the initial feel even when the underlying pocket-coil system is related.

What the pocket-spring construction tells you
Individually pocketed coils are designed as separate spring units rather than one continuous interconnected wire system. In principle, that construction can allow neighboring coils to compress more independently. For this mattress, however, the public material does not provide the information needed to predict a result for your bedroom: there is no published coil-gauge specification, zoning map, perimeter reinforcement detail, foam density schedule or independent motion-transfer measurement.
“AeroComfort” and “quilting comfort foam” are names used in the historical retailer description. They identify advertised comfort components, but they do not establish foam density, chemical composition, expected service life or a quantified breathability result. The 11-layer count likewise does not reveal how much of the profile is spring, foam, fabric or other material.
Those omissions matter when comparing an old Essence with another mattress. Two products can both have pocket springs while differing substantially in coil height, wire thickness, edge support and upholstery. Use the documented figures as identity checks, not as a shortcut to a comfort verdict.
Independent testing: what is and is not public
CHOICE’s public page lists the model, selected physical specifications, historical price fields and its availability status. The page does not expose the CHOICE Expert Rating or the individual results for support, stability, sagging resistance, breathability, wear and related measures without member access. Because those results are not visible, it is not responsible to say that the Essence passed or failed any of those tests.

This is an important distinction from a retailer description. A statement that a mattress has pocket coils or comfort foam explains what a seller says was built into it. It does not measure spinal support, edge collapse, heat retention or durability under repeated loading. Likewise, Bedbuyer’s archived Firm review, last updated in March 2019, records the reviewer’s subjective impressions of that version. Those impressions may help you understand how one reviewer experienced the surface, but they are not a universal finding and are not a laboratory score.
Historical prices and what they mean now
There are two dated price references, and they should not be merged. CHOICE’s mattress-sale investigation records an AUD 1,299 list price and AUD 614 paid price for the Conforma Essence in its historical table. CHOICE says the mattresses in that investigation were purchased from Australian retailers in May and June 2017. Bedbuyer’s archived Firm review gives an AUD 799 recommended retail price for a queen and was last updated in March 2019.
Neither figure is a 2026 price, a fair-price estimate or evidence that the same discount is available. A seller asking a high amount for old stock is not validated by the AUD 1,299 list figure, and a low second-hand price is not automatically a bargain if the mattress has unknown hygiene, moisture or support history. Ask for a dated receipt and compare the requested amount with the condition and remaining usable life rather than with a historic ticket price.

Harvey Norman’s historical copy states a 10-year guarantee, and Bedbuyer’s archived Firm review also mentions a 10-year warranty. Those statements describe the terms presented at the time; they do not establish that a warranty transfers to a second owner, survives a change of retailer, covers a clearance unit or remains valid after the manufacturer’s model is withdrawn.

Before paying, request the warranty document that applies to the exact mattress and sale channel. Check the start date, proof-of-purchase requirement, permitted base type, exclusions for stains or commercial use, inspection fees, transport responsibility and whether remedies are repair, replacement or a proportional credit. A verbal promise that “the 10-year warranty still applies” is not equivalent to written confirmation from the seller or manufacturer.
Buying old stock or a used Conforma Essence
Because the model is no longer shown as a current product in the available catalogue evidence, buying requires more verification than ordering a current mattress. Use this sequence before committing:
- Confirm identity. Obtain photographs of every label, the top and side panels, and the base. Make sure the name says Conforma Essence rather than another Conforma model; A.H. Beard’s Conforma Aspect is a different product and its specifications must not be substituted.
- Confirm size and feel in writing. Record single, king single, double, queen or king, plus Plush, Medium, Firm or Super Firm if stated. Ask the seller to put those details on the invoice.
- Establish age. Request the production date, delivery date and original receipt. A recent listing date on a marketplace is not the manufacturing date.
- Inspect hygiene and damage. Reject units with stains, odour, mould, pest evidence, torn quilting, exposed foam, bent edges or signs of storage in damp conditions. A protector can prevent new contamination but cannot make an already compromised mattress hygienic.
- Check support without overclaiming a test. Lie on the mattress for long enough to assess your normal sleeping positions, and have both partners move, sit on the edge and change position. This is a personal suitability check, not a replacement for CHOICE testing.
- Verify delivery and returns. Clarify who carries the mattress upstairs, whether old-mattress removal is included, the delivery area, the inspection period and the cost of returning a bulky item.
- Get the warranty terms. Keep the receipt, written model description and all promised remedies together.
For a used mattress, seller assurances about “barely used” do not answer the key questions. Ask whether it was ever exposed to pets, smoking, water, storage without ventilation or a non-compliant base. If the seller cannot provide a label or provenance, price it as an unverified mattress rather than as a confirmed Conforma Essence.

Who should consider it?
The evidence does not support a model-specific recommendation for a particular body weight, sleeping position or medical condition. The queen listing’s claimed Firm feel may appeal to someone deliberately seeking a firmer surface, but the claim is not a standardized firmness score and cannot predict whether the mattress will feel firm to you. Side sleepers, combination sleepers and couples should make their decision from an in-person trial or a clearly written return policy, because the public record does not supply pressure-relief, motion-transfer or edge-support results.

Likewise, the 28 cm profile can affect fitted-sheet depth and the height of your bed, but it does not guarantee a comfortable alignment with an existing base. Measure the base, check its support requirements and confirm that the seller will accept responsibility if the mattress is incompatible.
How to compare it with another mattress
A fair comparison needs the same information for both products. Put the Essence and the alternative into a common checklist rather than declaring a winner from spring count alone.

If an alternative has published test scores while the Essence does not, present that as an evidence advantage rather than claiming that the alternative must feel better. The most defensible conclusion is about certainty: one product may be easier to evaluate before purchase even when comfort remains personal.
Where availability claims can go wrong
Search results can keep old retailer pages visible for years. A page showing a photograph, a firmness menu or a “10-year” statement may be an archive, not a live offer. Ask the retailer to confirm stock physically exists, identify the exact model on the invoice and state whether it is new, showroom, clearance or returned stock. If the seller cannot answer those questions, do not treat the page as proof that the mattress is currently manufactured.
A.H. Beard’s current King Koil collection can help you locate retailers for current King Koil products, but that relationship alone says nothing about the Essence’s remaining inventory. A seller offering another Conforma model should identify it by its own name and specifications; do not use the Conforma Aspect’s materials, dimensions, endorsements or guarantee as evidence about the Essence.
Bottom line for a prospective buyer
The Conforma Essence is identifiable as an Australian-made King Koil pocket-spring mattress with a queen record showing 219 springs per square metre, 11 layers, 37 kg and a 28 cm height. Historical retailer material adds four advertised feels, five sizes, AeroComfort, quilting comfort foam and a 10-year guarantee statement. Those details explain what was sold, not how a particular old unit will perform today.
Buy only when the seller can document the exact variant, age, condition, delivery and written warranty terms. Treat the 2017 CHOICE prices and 2019 Bedbuyer price as historical reference points, and do not infer support, durability or value from the unavailable CHOICE scores. If those checks cannot be completed, a current mattress with transparent testing and enforceable returns is the lower-risk purchase.
