A Guide to Hearthstone’s Expansions, Adventures, and Story Campaigns

Short answer: an Expansion is a large card-set release that defines a season’s setting, characters, and mechanics; an Adventure is a focused, encounter-based solo story (especially in Hearthstone’s 2014–2016 release model); and Journey is the current campaign framework in the Hearthstone Journal, combining weekly chapters, quests, rewards, events, and seasonal activities. They overlap in story, but they are not interchangeable formats.

What each Hearthstone story format means

Hearthstone has used several names for narrative content. The terms describe both how a release plays and how Blizzard distributes its story, so understanding the format is more useful than memorizing a simple list of names.

Expansions: the season-sized card ecosystem

An expansion is the large release that establishes a season’s setting, cast, visual identity, and gameplay mechanics. Its main product is a new card set, and its story can extend beyond a single launch. A narrative introduced in one expansion may continue in later releases rather than ending with one final encounter.

Blizzard’s 2017 Year of the Mammoth announcement described a move to three large expansions each year, with approximately 130 cards in each expansion. That replaced the earlier pattern of alternating expansions and Adventures. The card count is a historical planning figure from that announcement, not a promise that every later set has exactly the same size.

Adventures: concentrated solo storytelling

Adventures are focused, encounter-based pieces of solo content. They present a contained premise and let you experience a sequence of encounters rather than simply reading a story around a card release. In 2017, Hearthstone game director Dean Ayala described Adventures as content that “paint colorful and thematic stories about the Hearthstone universe.”

In practical terms, an Adventure is the format to associate with a compact, playable chapter: a defined cast, a sequence of bosses or encounters, and a conclusion that usually feels more self-contained than an expansion’s season-long arc. “Adventure” is also a historical release category, so the word does not describe every solo story mode that appears in the modern client.

Journey: the current living campaign layer

Journey is Blizzard’s newer way of delivering an active story during an expansion. It lives in the Hearthstone Journal and combines weekly chapters, Journey Quests, rewards, events, and seasonal experiences in one campaign. Blizzard describes it as a campaign that unfolds throughout an expansion rather than as a one-time solo release.

That distinction matters when you return to Hearthstone after a break. An older Adventure is a completed release from a past content model; a Journey campaign is a live seasonal track whose parts can arrive on a schedule and whose rewards are tied to participation in the current season.

Expansion, Adventure, or Journey? A direct comparison

Axis Expansion Adventure Journey
Content form Large card-set release with new mechanics and a setting Focused, encounter-based solo story Journal-based campaign combining chapters, quests, rewards, events, and seasonal experiences
Narrative scope Can establish a season-spanning arc that continues across releases Usually a concentrated, self-contained chapter Ongoing seasonal narrative that unfolds in scheduled parts
Availability model Current or historical card set; the 2026 Card Sets page marks Year of the Scarab as Standard & Wild Primarily historical content from the 2014–2016 Adventure cadence Current-season content delivered through the Hearthstone Journal
What you do Collect and play cards from the set; follow any story attached to the season Complete a sequence of solo encounters Complete weekly chapters and Journey Quests while collecting associated rewards
Best reason to play To participate in the season’s card-game ecosystem and mechanics To experience a concentrated piece of Hearthstone lore in solo play To follow the live narrative and earn progress-based seasonal rewards

The boundaries are not absolute. Expansions can contain substantial story, and an expansion’s themes may absorb the kind of colorful storytelling once associated with Adventures. The table is a guide to the dominant format and availability model, not a claim that every release fits only one category.

How Hearthstone’s release model changed

2014–2016: Adventures interleaved with expansions

Blizzard’s official Card Sets chronology lists Adventures in June 2014, April 2015, November 2015, and August 2016, with expansions released between them. This period is the clearest example of Adventures as a formal product category alongside card-set expansions.

For a player looking at that era, the release order is therefore alternating rather than a single uninterrupted expansion sequence. An Adventure may explain a setting or cast that appears around the same period, while the neighboring expansion broadens the card pool and introduces its own mechanics.

2017 onward: an expansion-led annual cadence

In the Year of the Mammoth announcement, Blizzard said the previous model alternated Expansions and Adventures and announced three approximately 130-card expansions per year instead. The same explanation said Adventures’ thematic storytelling could be brought into expansion stories.

This was a change in packaging, not an announcement that Hearthstone’s stories would stop. Narrative became more closely tied to the expansion cycle, with the card set, setting, characters, and story presented as parts of one season.

2025–2026: connected seasonal narratives

The recent releases show why a strict “expansion versus Adventure” choice can be misleading. Across the Timeways, released November 4, 2025, follows Chromie and the Heroes of Time as they confront Murozond across timelines. CATACLYSM, launched March 17, 2026, follows that thread with an alternate-timeline Deathwing invasion. The later Escape from Violet Hold, released July 7, 2026, changes premise to an outlaw prison break in Dalaran.

These releases demonstrate two different kinds of continuity. Across the Timeways and CATACLYSM are explicitly connected by an ongoing arc, while Escape from Violet Hold shifts to a new location and premise within the same broader seasonal schedule. A player should therefore read expansion stories as parts of a moving setting, not assume that every release is either a stand-alone chapter or a direct sequel.

The current 2026 structure: Year of the Scarab and Journey

Three expansion slots are listed for the year

Blizzard’s current Card Sets page lists the Year of the Scarab for 2026, with expansion slots in March, July, and October. The page marks the year as Standard & Wild. “Standard & Wild” describes the formats associated with the year’s card-set listing; it does not by itself mean that every older solo story is available through the same menu.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

The three-slot schedule gives the year a predictable seasonal rhythm, but the story attached to those releases can be serialized. A player who wants the narrative context should treat each expansion launch as a point in a larger calendar, then check the Journal for campaign chapters and quests connected to the active season.

The Road to Ny’alotha begins a seven-part Journey

Blizzard’s first announced Journey chapter, The Road to Ny’alotha, begins October 13, 2026. It unfolds in seven weekly parts. Completing each part awards one Reign of the Black Empire Pack, so the complete announced sequence offers one such pack for each completed weekly chapter.

This is materially different from opening a historical Adventure and finishing all of its encounters in one sitting. The Journey schedule spaces the campaign over seven weekly parts, and the reward is attached to completion of each part. If you begin after the first week, the available chapters and reward timing can depend on how Blizzard has configured the live season; consult the Journal’s current campaign display rather than assuming an old Adventure-style unlock order.

How to follow a Hearthstone story campaign now

  1. Identify the active season. Check the current Card Sets listing and note which expansion cycle is running. For 2026, the listed Year of the Scarab expansion slots are March, July, and October.
  2. Open the Hearthstone Journal. Journey content is delivered through the Journal, where Blizzard groups the campaign’s chapters, Journey Quests, rewards, events, and seasonal experiences.
  3. Read the campaign status before playing. The Journey view indicates which weekly chapter is active or completed. This is the reliable way to distinguish a live Journey from an older solo release.
  4. Complete the displayed chapter requirements. Follow the Journey Quest or chapter instructions shown in the client. Do not substitute a historical Adventure’s encounter requirements; the two formats use different progression systems.
  5. Claim or verify the reward. For The Road to Ny’alotha, Blizzard states that each completed weekly part awards one Reign of the Black Empire Pack. Confirm completion in the Journal so you know the part has registered.
  6. Return each week until the sequence is complete. The announced chapter has seven weekly parts. Record which part you finished if you take a break, because the campaign is designed to unfold over time rather than as a single uninterrupted run.

The exact buttons and quest text can change with the live client. The stable rule is that Journey progress is managed in the Journal; a card-collection screen or an old Solo Adventures menu is not a substitute for the active campaign view.

What order should you play Hearthstone’s story content?

If you want the historical release story

Use the official Card Sets chronology as your backbone. Start with the earliest listed Adventure in June 2014, then move through the intervening expansions, the April 2015 Adventure, the November 2015 Adventure, and the August 2016 Adventure. After that, follow the expansion-led cadence beginning with the 2017 model.

This approach preserves release context: you see Adventures when they were part of the annual schedule, then experience the shift toward stories embedded in expansions. It is more defensible than inventing a character-by-character order, because Blizzard’s chronology supplies release placement but not a complete encounter-by-encounter archive for every historical Adventure.

If you want the connected modern arc

Begin with Across the Timeways (November 4, 2025), continue to CATACLYSM (March 17, 2026), and then move to the current 2026 seasonal material. Treat Escape from Violet Hold (July 7, 2026) as a later premise focused on a Dalaran prison break rather than assuming it is a direct continuation of Deathwing’s invasion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you only care about what is live now

Start in the Hearthstone Journal and follow the active Journey. For the announced 2026 campaign, that means beginning with The Road to Ny’alotha and completing its seven weekly parts as they become available. This is the least confusing route for a returning player who wants current quests and rewards rather than an archive of older solo content.

If you are building a personal lore backlog

Separate your checklist into two columns: historical Adventures and expansion-era campaigns. Mark each item by release date and format. That prevents a common mistake—placing a modern Journey chapter in the same category as a 2015 Adventure simply because both contain story.

Which expansions belong to the same story?

The safest way to identify a shared story is to look for an explicit continuation in Blizzard’s expansion descriptions. The clearest current example is Across the Timeways leading into CATACLYSM: the first follows Chromie and the Heroes of Time against Murozond across timelines, while the second follows with an alternate-timeline Deathwing invasion.

Do not assume that every expansion in the same calendar year forms one uninterrupted plot. Escape from Violet Hold demonstrates the limitation: its outlaw prison-break premise in Dalaran is a distinct setup, even though it follows the earlier releases in the 2026 schedule. A shared year, card format, or Standard designation is not proof of a single narrative arc.

For older releases, the available chronology establishes when an Adventure or expansion launched, but it does not provide a complete, authoritative scene-by-scene order for every encounter. When the client or an official release description does not identify a sequel relationship, describe the releases as neighboring seasonal stories rather than claiming a direct continuation.

How availability differs between old Adventures and current campaigns

Historical Adventures

The Adventures listed from 2014 through 2016 belong to an earlier release model. Their historical placement is clear, but a chronology page alone does not establish a universal way to launch every encounter today. Availability can depend on the client version and Blizzard’s current menus, so do not promise that every old Adventure is accessible through the same path as a current Journey.

Expansion stories

Expansion card sets are tied to the game’s format rotation and collection systems. The 2026 Card Sets listing marks Year of the Scarab as Standard & Wild, while older sets may have different format status. Format status tells you where cards can be played; it does not automatically describe whether a related story campaign remains playable.

Journey campaigns

Journey is the current seasonal delivery layer. Its chapters, quests, events, and rewards are organized in the Journal and can be time-based. The Road to Ny’alotha’s seven weekly parts and one-pack-per-completed-part reward are examples of this live structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling every solo story an Adventure. Reserve the term for the historical Adventure category or use it descriptively for focused solo content; identify modern Journal campaigns as Journeys.
  • Expecting an expansion to have one final chapter. An expansion may establish an arc that continues into later releases, as shown by Across the Timeways and CATACLYSM.
  • Using release date as proof of a sequel. Calendar order is evidence of sequence, not automatically of plot continuity. Check the official description for an explicit connection.
  • Confusing card availability with story availability. Standard & Wild labels concern card formats. They do not guarantee access to an old Adventure or a completed campaign.
  • Trying to finish a Journey in one session. A Journey is designed to unfold through scheduled chapters. Track weekly completion in the Journal instead.
  • Assuming the old Adventure archive is complete. Blizzard’s chronology lists release dates, but it does not by itself provide every encounter, unlock condition, or current access method.

A practical decision guide

Your goal Start here Why
Learn Hearthstone’s historical release evolution Card Sets chronology from June 2014 onward It shows Adventures interleaved with expansions, then the 2017 expansion-led cadence
Play a compact, solo-focused story An available historical Adventure The format is built around a concentrated sequence of encounters
Follow the current live narrative Hearthstone Journal > Journey Current chapters, quests, events, and rewards are managed there
Follow the modern connected arc Across the Timeways → CATACLYSM Blizzard’s descriptions explicitly connect the timeways conflict to the alternate-timeline Deathwing invasion
Earn the announced 2026 Journey rewards The Road to Ny’alotha Seven weekly parts award one Reign of the Black Empire Pack for each completed part

Bottom line: think in three layers

Use Expansion for the large card-set and season framework, Adventure for the historical encounter-based solo format, and Journey for the current Journal campaign that unfolds through weekly chapters, quests, rewards, events, and seasonal experiences. For chronology, follow Blizzard’s release dates; for modern continuity, start with Across the Timeways and CATACLYSM; for what is active now, open the Journal and follow the current Journey rather than searching for an old Adventure menu.
