A survey ahead of an underwater gas pipeline in 2023 led divers to a previously unknown shipwreck in Germany’s Bay of Greifswald. Tree-ring analysis places the felling of one timber between 1626 and 1639, making the vessel roughly four centuries old—but the evidence does not establish when it was built or sank.
How a pipeline survey led to the discovery
The wreck was found in the Bay of Greifswald, a sheltered lagoon on Germany’s Baltic coast. During preparations for an underwater gas pipeline, divers investigated anomalies on the seabed and encountered shoe soles, pulley blocks and an anchor. Those objects pointed to a shipwreck that had not previously been identified.
The remains lay about 7.5 metres below the surface in soft silt. With dredging imminent, five archaeologists documented and recovered material during 22 dives over just more than 12 days. The pipeline route was changed, and the wreck remains were covered with sandbags.
How old is the shipwreck?
Tree-ring analysis of one timber indicates that the tree used for it was felled between 1626 and 1639. That evidence supports a 17th-century date for the vessel, but it does not give the exact year the ship was built or the date it sank.

The find is described in a preliminary investigation by Michał Konrad Grabowski and colleagues, published in 2026 as “A 17th-Century AD Clinker-Built Vessel from the Bay of Greifswald, Germany: Preliminary Report on the Peenemündung, Fpl. 142 Shipwreck Investigation” in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. What archaeologists found
The surviving hull is fragmentary: a roughly 7.5-metre patch of outer planking, along with loose frames and timbers. The planks overlap in clinker construction and were fastened with iron nails. Gaps were sealed using tar and animal hair.

Archaeologists documented more than 60 objects. The finds include:
- Wooden stocks, rope and barrel staves.
- A hollowed oak trunk interpreted as a possible bilge pump.
- Carpentry tools, including a hand-drill handle.
- Two shoe soles and a stitched leather strap.
- Animal bones.
- A pierced clay brick held in a wooden block.
The tools may indicate that the ship’s crew could make repairs aboard, but the objects do not establish exactly how they were used. The brick’s proposed role as a sharpening tool is also tentative. Its unusual form puzzled Grabowski, who said: “I had no idea what it was, but I really wanted to solve the mystery.”

What is known—and unknown—about the sinking
The evidence has not identified the ship, its home port or its intended destination. Some timbers were charred, but fire is only one possible explanation for the sinking. Anchors and an associated buoy may suggest the vessel was anchored before it went down; they do not prove what happened next.
The report suggests that more of the wreck may lie east of the find spot, an area that reporting says had not yet been searched. Until additional material is found and assessed, the ship’s history remains uncertain. Grabowski put the caution plainly: “I try not to speculate. Otherwise, we risk creating an alternative history.”
