Researchers have identified an unusual rice resistance gene, Ptr, that detects the rice-blast fungus’s effector protein AVR-Pita. The finding, published in Nature Plants on 4 June 2024 by scientists at INRAE, CIRAD, the University of Montpellier and partner institutions, corrects a long-standing assumption that the nearby Pi-ta gene made that recognition.
Ptr is promising for breeding, but it is not a universal cure or guaranteed immunity. Protection depends on which Ptr allele a rice variety carries and whether a local fungal strain produces an AVR-Pita variant that allele can recognize.

What fungus is threatening food security?
The pathogen is Magnaporthe oryzae, also called Pyricularia oryzae. It causes blast disease in rice and can also infect wheat. In rice, lesions on leaves, stems and panicles can reduce grain formation and yield.

A 2024 estimate reported in Communications Biology calculated that preventing rice-blast losses could provide enough food for about 60 million people each year. That figure describes the potential scale of avoided losses, not an amount that the new gene will immediately recover.

The wider “food supply” problem is larger than rice blast alone. A review in Nature Food identifies intensive monoculture, globalized trade, climate change and fungicide resistance as factors that help fungal and oomycete pathogens emerge and spread. The Australian National University reported in 2025 that fungal diseases cost farmers roughly 10–23% of crops each year. Those figures cover fungal disease broadly, not just M. oryzae.
How the Ptr discovery works
M. oryzae secretes AVR-Pita, a virulence effector that helps the fungus invade rice when the plant lacks a matching recognition system. Plant breeders had generally associated AVR-Pita recognition with Pi-ta, a nearby nucleotide-binding leucine-rich-repeat (NLR) resistance gene.
The 2024 team tested that assumption with gene-silencing experiments and CRISPR/Cas9 knockout rice lines. Removing or reducing Ptr abolished the relevant AVR-Pita recognition, demonstrating that Ptr—not Pi-ta—is the required detector in these genetic backgrounds.

Ptr encodes a membrane protein with a cytoplasmic armadillo-repeat domain. That structure differs from the conventional NLR architecture usually associated with plant immune receptors. Earlier experiments had already shown that disrupting Ptr could turn blast-resistant rice susceptible; the new work identifies the molecular recognition event behind that observation.
CIRAD’s 4 June 2024 research release said, “The presence of this Ptr gene makes rice immune to strains of M. oryzae that secrete AVR-Pita virulence factor.” In practical terms, the demonstrated protection is conditional: the pathogen must secrete a recognized AVR-Pita sequence, and the rice must carry a compatible Ptr allele.
How broad is the protection?
The study found that Ptr alleles do not provide identical coverage. The plant allele and the fungal effector variant form a matching pair.

A single polymorphism in AVR-Pita can allow a fungal strain to evade PtrB-mediated detection. Consequently, the result should not be presented as broad-spectrum resistance against every rice-blast strain. Local pathogen surveillance and testing against the alleles present in a breeding program remain important.
What breeders can do with the finding
The immediate application is genetic improvement, not a spray or a seed product that farmers can buy today. Breeding programs could:
- Screen rice germplasm for PtrA, PtrB and other useful Ptr variants.
- Use molecular markers to select seedlings carrying a desired allele.
- Introgress those alleles into locally adapted varieties while retaining yield, quality and climate-adaptation traits.
- Combine Ptr-mediated recognition with other blast-resistance genes so that a pathogen escaping one detector is less likely to overcome the whole variety.
- Pair resistant genetics with field sanitation, agronomic practices and carefully managed disease-control programs.
The study’s authors and the CIRAD release describe the result as opening a route to investigate additional resistance mechanisms and use them in crop protection. Moving from a laboratory finding to a released variety requires multiyear crossing, field testing, regulatory review where applicable and evaluation against the pathogen populations in each production region.

Can the discovery protect wheat?
Not on the evidence currently reported. The same species causes blast disease in wheat, but the Ptr work identified recognition in rice. It does not show that transferring Ptr into wheat will protect wheat plants, nor that existing wheat varieties carrying an equivalent gene are protected.
Other research illustrates why wheat needs its own defenses. USDA Agricultural Research Service reporting says Fusarium head blight causes more than $1 billion in annual losses in wheat and barley and contaminates grain with mycotoxins. Its 2025 research news described FgTPP1, a fungal molecule that suppresses wheat defenses. That pathogen and mechanism are different from rice blast.

A 2025 study from the Australian National University and ANSTO examined NUDIX hydrolase enzymes used by many fungal pathogens as virulence weapons. Understanding those enzymes could eventually support engineering of more resilient rice, corn and other crops. It is a research direction, not a released treatment or commercial crop technology.
Is there a product farmers can buy now?
No specific product follows from the Ptr publication. The evidence supports future resistant-seed and breeding work, diagnostic testing for pathogen variants and continued pathology research. It does not establish a universally effective fungicide, a finished Ptr-based seed line or guaranteed immunity in every rice variety.
For now, the practical conclusion is precise: Ptr reveals a new way rice can detect AVR-Pita, with PtrA offering the wider tested recognition range and PtrB offering narrower, allele-specific protection. Its value will depend on matching the right rice allele to the fungal populations farmers actually face and combining that resistance with broader disease-management strategies.
