A Box from Ben

A Father of Three Was Told He Was “Too Young for Cancer” at 37. Months Later, His Diagnosis Was Terminal

Ben Williams was 37 when he was diagnosed with stage-four small-cell lung cancer. His wife, Anita, told The Independent that after he first sought help for persistent pain, she recalled being told he was “too young for cancer.” By the time a biopsy confirmed the disease in January 2021, the family was told it was terminal. Ben died aged 38 in July that year.

What happened before Ben Williams’s diagnosis?

In an account published by The Independent in September 2026, Anita Williams said her husband had been fit and healthy before developing nagging pain on one side above his hip in summer 2020. He visited his GP and had blood and urine tests. Anita recalled that clinicians could not identify the cause and that he was told, “You’re too young for cancer.” He was referred for physiotherapy, but it did not ease the symptoms.

Anita then arranged imaging through private healthcare available via a previous employer. She said an ultrasound showed something on Ben’s liver, which she was told was not thought worrying. A CT scan subsequently flagged something in his lung. A follow-up scan in January 2021 showed masses on his lung and liver, and a biopsy led to the diagnosis of small-cell lung cancer.

The consultations and comments in this account are Anita’s recollections as reported by The Independent; the report does not present Ben’s medical records or an independent review of those consultations. His story should not be taken to establish why a diagnosis occurred when it did or to assess the actions of any individual clinician.

What cancer was Ben diagnosed with, and what did the family hear?

Ben was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer. Anita said she asked what stage it was and was told stage four because cancer had been found in his liver and adrenal glands. She recalled being told: “Then he said, ‘I’m really sorry, but it’s terminal. There’s nothing we can do to treat this’, and I just screamed. Ben was holding me and I was wailing.”

Anita told The Independent that the family had been given a prognosis of 12 to 18 months. That was the estimate reported to them at the time, not a general survival figure. Ben received chemotherapy, which Anita said helped relieve his pain, as well as immunotherapy.

What happened after the terminal diagnosis?

Ben’s condition deteriorated in June 2021. Anita and Ben renewed their vows in August as his health worsened. He later lost the ability to swallow, walk, urinate and speak, and was admitted to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. There, he was diagnosed with leptomeningeal cancer: cancer cells spreading to the thin tissue layers covering the brain and spinal cord.

Ben died in July 2021, about six months after his diagnosis and after around four weeks in hospice, with Anita by his side. He was 38. The Independent’s account is the basis for this chronology; another report by UNILAD contains inconsistent wording about the month of his death, so July is used here.

How did Anita and the children live with the loss?

Ben and Anita had three children: Kieran, Ella and Emilie. In the September 2026 report, they were 22, 19 and seven. Anita described the difficulty of telling them about their father’s terminal diagnosis and then supporting them through school, exams, university and other milestones while grieving.

Anita received trauma therapy for PTSD connected with witnessing Ben’s death. She said grief remained a struggle five years later, and described the importance of taking things “hour by hour, day by day.” She also found comfort in Widowed and Young, a peer-support group for people who have been widowed.

Paul Madden, head of grief and bereavement quality and governance at Sue Ryder, told The Independent: “There is no set timeline for grief, nor a ‘correct’ way to navigate it. It can come in waves, often when least expected.” Anita likewise said: “I think the most important thing that people should understand about grief is that, yes, I might be five years in, but that doesn’t mean I’m OK.”

Why did Anita create A Box from Ben?

After Ben’s death, Anita wished the family had captured more of his presence: his fingerprints or handprints, voice, handwriting and things he wanted to say. She created A Box from Ben, a memory-box project intended to help families facing terminal illness preserve keepsakes and memories.

What did Anita say to people supporting someone who is grieving?

Anita’s advice was simple: “And finally, I think I’d say to anyone who’s dealing with someone who’s grieving, be kind.” Her account makes clear that support is not a matter of expecting grief to follow a timetable; it is about being present and allowing the bereaved person to say what they need.
