A Disc Burner Wasn’t Found When Burning an Image: Windows Fixes

“A disc burner wasn’t found” means Windows’ built-in ISO image burner cannot see an available, writable optical drive. First confirm that the computer has a CD/DVD/Blu-ray writer rather than a read-only drive. If the hardware is writable, restart Windows Explorer and then reinstall or update the drive in Device Manager. If you actually need bootable installation media on a USB stick, do not use the optical-disc workflow: write the ISO to USB with an ISO-to-USB utility such as Rufus instead.

What the message means

When you right-click an ISO file and choose Burn Disk Image, Windows launches its optical-image burner (the isoburn.exe workflow). That workflow requires a physical optical drive that Windows can access and that reports write capability. The message appears when no such drive is exposed to Windows.

A drive can be present and still fail this test. A DVD-ROM drive may read discs but cannot record them. A writer may be disconnected, disabled in firmware, hidden by a driver problem, or unavailable because Windows is running in a virtual machine or Remote Desktop session without access to the host’s physical hardware.

The wording does not indicate that the ISO file itself is necessarily damaged. It describes a missing or unusable burner from Windows’ point of view.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

Choose the correct path: disc or USB

Decide what you want to create before changing drivers. The two jobs use different hardware and software.

Aspect Physical-disc route Bootable-USB route
Required hardware A writable optical drive and a blank writable disc A suitable USB flash drive
Software path Windows’ image burner (isoburn.exe) Rufus or another ISO-to-USB utility
Typical failure behind this message The drive is read-only, absent, hidden, disconnected, or inaccessible The USB target is unsuitable, boot settings are wrong, or the ISO-writing configuration is incorrect
Best fit Older computers or equipment that specifically requires optical media Modern PCs and systems without an optical drive

Windows’ native image-burner path writes to optical media; it does not turn an ISO into bootable USB media. If the end result is a USB installer, skip the burner troubleshooting unless you also need to make a disc.

1. Verify that the installed drive can write

Start with the capability check because software cannot add recording hardware to a read-only drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Look at the optical-drive label. A model name containing RW is an indication that it supports writing. Labels such as DVD-ROM generally identify read-only hardware.
  3. Check the drive’s specifications or the computer’s documentation if the label is unclear. A “combo” drive may write CDs but only read DVDs, so verify that it supports the medium you intend to use.

If the device is ROM-only, stop trying Windows repair steps. Use a computer with a writable drive, replace the internal unit, or connect an external USB DVD writer. You will also need blank writable media that matches the writer (for example, a DVD writer and blank DVD media).

Please verify your device type before purchasing

If no optical drive appears under This PC, continue with the visibility checks below. Do not assume that the drive is absent until you check Device Manager and the machine’s firmware settings.

2. Rule out virtual, remote, and connection limits

A Remote Desktop session or virtual machine may not expose the host computer’s physical burner. In that case, Windows inside the session cannot use the writer even though one is installed in the host.

  • Run the burn operation directly on the physical computer that contains the writer.
  • For a virtual machine, configure approved physical-device passthrough or attach a USB writer directly to the computer running the guest. The exact option depends on the virtualization software.
  • For an external writer, unplug it, reconnect it directly to the active computer rather than through an unpowered hub, and try another USB port.
  • For an internal drive, power the computer off and check that its data and power connections are firmly seated. Only open a desktop or remove a laptop panel if you are comfortable following the manufacturer’s service instructions.

A loose cable, failed USB port, or disabled controller can make a previously working writer disappear from Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Restart Windows Explorer when recognition is stuck

If the drive is known to be writable and appears normally in Windows but the burn command still reports no burner, restart the shell. This refreshes recognition; it does not repair failed hardware.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. In the process list, select Windows Explorer.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. The taskbar and open folder windows may briefly disappear and return.
  4. Close and reopen File Explorer, right-click the ISO, and choose Burn Disk Image again.

If the error returns, proceed to the driver and firmware checks instead of repeatedly restarting Explorer.

4. Reinstall or update the DVD/CD driver

Windows 10 and Windows 11 can reinstall a device driver during the next restart. Microsoft’s documented uninstall-and-restart procedure is the least disruptive driver repair to try first.

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. If the category is missing, also look for an unknown device or a warning icon under another category.
  3. Right-click the optical drive and choose Uninstall device.
  4. Confirm the removal. Do not select unrelated storage devices.
  5. Restart Windows. During startup, Windows attempts to detect the drive and reinstall an appropriate driver.
  6. After the desktop loads, return to Device Manager and check whether the drive appears without a warning icon. Test Burn Disk Image again.

If Windows does not restore the device, open Device Manager, right-click the drive (if listed), choose Update driver, and try Search automatically for drivers. For a manual installation, obtain the driver from the optical-drive or computer manufacturer’s official support site, then use Browse my computer for drivers. Avoid driver packages from unidentified download sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A driver update may not help when the drive is electrically disconnected or physically incapable of writing. Treat a persistent absence after a restart as a hardware, firmware, or environment problem rather than an ISO problem.

5. Check BIOS or UEFI visibility

Some systems allow the optical drive or its storage controller to be disabled in BIOS/UEFI. If the drive is missing from both File Explorer and Device Manager, restart the computer and enter firmware setup using the key shown on the manufacturer’s startup screen (commonly F2, Delete, or Esc).

  • Look for a storage, SATA, optical-drive, or onboard-device setting and ensure the relevant controller is enabled.
  • Save changes and restart Windows.
  • If the firmware does not list an internal drive that is connected, power off and recheck the cables or have the hardware serviced.

Firmware menus differ by manufacturer, so do not change boot, RAID, or security settings that are unrelated to the optical device.

6. Burn the ISO to a physical disc

Once Windows shows a writable drive and you have suitable blank media, use the built-in image command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert a blank writable CD, DVD, or Blu-ray disc that your drive supports.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click the ISO file and select Burn Disk Image.
  3. Choose the confirmed writable drive in the Disc burner field.
  4. Enable the option to verify the disc after burning if it is offered. Verification adds time but can reveal bad media or a failing writer.
  5. Select Burn and wait for Windows to finish before ejecting the disc.

An ISO is a disc image. Copying the single .iso file onto a data disc is not the same as writing the image; use Burn Disk Image so the disc contains the expected boot and file structure. Rewritable media can be erased and reused, while write-once media cannot be cleared after recording.

7. Create bootable USB media instead

If your target computer has no optical drive, or the installer is intended for USB, use an ISO-to-USB utility. Rufus’ official site describes creating bootable USB flash drives from ISO images and lists support for Windows 8 or later. The site lists Rufus version 4.15 with a release date of June 30, 2026.

  1. Obtain the correct ISO for the operating system or recovery environment you intend to install.
  2. Connect a USB flash drive with enough capacity for that ISO. Copy any important files elsewhere first; writing the image normally erases the selected USB drive.
  3. Open Rufus and confirm that the Device field names the USB drive you intend to overwrite.
  4. Use the boot-selection control to choose the ISO, then review the partition and target-system options Rufus proposes. Match them to the destination computer’s firmware mode when the utility asks.
  5. Start the write operation and accept the erase warning only after checking the drive letter or device name.
  6. Safely eject the USB drive when Rufus reports completion, then select that USB device in the destination computer’s boot menu.

If the computer does not boot from the USB, check that the image finished successfully, try another USB port, and review the computer’s UEFI/BIOS boot order and Secure Boot requirements for that particular installer. Those settings are separate from the optical-burner error.

Common symptoms and the next action

The drive label says DVD-ROM or has no write specification Read-only hardware Use an internal replacement or external USB DVD writer; obtain compatible blank media.
The drive is visible in This PC but Burn Disk Image says no burner Explorer recognition issue, driver fault, or the device is not actually writable Confirm RW capability, restart Windows Explorer, then reinstall or update the Device Manager entry.
The drive is missing from This PC and Device Manager Disconnected hardware, disabled firmware setting, failed device, or unsupported environment Check direct connections, BIOS/UEFI visibility, and whether you are using a VM or Remote Desktop session.
The drive works on the host but not in a virtual or remote session The session does not expose the physical writer Run the operation on the physical host or attach a writer directly to the active computer.
You only need installation media on a USB stick The optical workflow is the wrong tool Use Rufus or an equivalent ISO-to-USB utility and verify USB boot settings.
A burn starts but fails with different errors Unsupported media, damaged blank disc, or a failing writer Confirm media compatibility, try a new disc, and test the drive with another known-good image.

What cannot solve this error

  • Installing software cannot make a CD/DVD-ROM drive record discs.
  • Restarting Explorer cannot repair a disconnected cable, failed laser, or disabled firmware controller.
  • Windows’ isoburn.exe workflow cannot write an ISO directly to a USB flash drive.
  • Repeated driver removal will not provide access to a burner that a virtual or Remote Desktop session does not expose.

Use the simplest route that matches the required output: a confirmed writable optical drive plus blank compatible media for a disc, or a USB flash drive plus an ISO-writing utility for bootable USB media.
