A Deshelled PS5 Pro in a Cardboard Box? One Redditor Says It’s Still Running After a Year

One Reddit poster says a deshelled PlayStation 5 Pro has kept working for more than a year inside a cardboard box with an external fan. That is an intriguing anecdote, not a verified endurance test—and it does not show that a bare PS5 Pro can safely run without cooling or that dust is harmless.

What the Reddit poster says happened

In a post dated October 3, 2026, the poster says they run a pawn shop and acquired PS5 Pro electronics after a customer removed the console’s components and returned its empty shell. The poster says they placed the components in a cardboard box, added an external fan, and used the system daily with PlayStation VR2. In an update, they said it had been running for more than a year. The Reddit post does not include an independent inspection, operating logs, or measurements that verify the account or the console’s current condition.

Wccftech also reported the story, but repeating the poster’s account does not independently establish the machine’s condition, runtime, or reliability.

Why this is not proof that a bare PS5 Pro needs no cooling

The described setup was not simply a bare console left without cooling: the poster says the electronics were housed in a cardboard box and used with an external fan. No airflow measurements or controlled comparison are available, so the account cannot show how that arrangement performs against a factory-configured PS5 Pro.

Sony’s official PS5 Pro teardown explains that the console has a top-side dust catcher and a fan designed to move air more efficiently. PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida said, “the PS5 Pro requires more air for cooling.” Sony’s explanation describes the engineered console; it does not approve the cardboard enclosure, deshelling, or an unspecified external fan.

What Sony says about dust and covers

Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide advises users not to let dust build up on the vents and to disconnect the console before cleaning. The one Reddit account does not overturn that routine maintenance guidance, and it provides no measurements of dust buildup.

Sony’s PS5 Pro Console Covers manual gives instructions for removing and attaching compatible covers: switch off and unplug the console, then wait for it to cool. It documents cover handling, not a recommendation to remove the console’s exterior for operation. The post does not establish whether compatible covers were used or needed in that build.

Can a PS5 Pro run without its shell?

The careful answer is that one poster reports a working modified configuration: electronics in a cardboard box with an external fan. The account is not independent evidence that deshelling is safe, that this setup is reliable, or that another unit will behave the same way. Sony’s available guidance describes the PS5 Pro’s designed airflow and ordinary dust and cover care, but does not endorse operating it in this modified arrangement. There are no reported temperature, noise, dust, or failure-rate measurements for a comparison.

What PS5 Pro owners should take from the story

  • Treat the year-plus runtime as the Reddit poster’s claim, not a verified reliability result.
  • Do not read “still running” as evidence that dust cannot damage a PS5 Pro; Sony advises preventing dust from accumulating on its vents.
  • Do not assume that an external fan or cardboard enclosure reproduces Sony’s airflow design. The post gives no specifications or performance data for either.
  • For routine care or cover handling, follow Sony’s safety and cover instructions rather than extrapolating from a single modified build.
