IBM lists Guardium Data Protection 12.2 as affected by CVE-2026-81657, a critical unauthenticated remote-code-execution vulnerability. Administrators should identify 12.2 deployments, assess their network reachability and patch state, then verify the applicable IBM Fix Central update and install it using IBM’s instructions. IBM lists no workaround.

What CVE-2026-81657 means for Guardium administrators

IBM describes CVE-2026-81657 as a deserialization-of-untrusted-data vulnerability that could let a remote attacker without authentication execute arbitrary code on the system. The CVE record classifies it as CWE-502. IBM assigns a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8, with vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. In practical terms, the score reflects network access, low attack complexity, no required privileges or user interaction, and high potential impact to confidentiality, integrity and availability. IBM notes that environmental scoring is customer-specific, so use the base score as a severity baseline rather than a substitute for local risk assessment. IBM’s security bulletin

Check whether your deployment is in scope

  1. Inventory Guardium Data Protection installations. Use your organization’s asset and configuration records to identify product versions and the appliances running them.
  2. Flag version 12.2. IBM identifies version 12.2 as affected. Its affected-version entries cover supported versions; if your installation is on an omitted unsupported or extended-support version, do not assume it is safe. Ask IBM Support to confirm its status.
  3. Assess reachability and patch state per appliance. Review your own network and asset records to determine whether each system is reachable from relevant networks and whether the IBM fix is already installed. The bulletin cannot determine exposure or patch status in your environment.

Keep the assessment at the appliance level: installations on the same product version can have different reachability and update status.

Apply IBM’s fix

IBM says the vulnerability is addressed in an update and lists Fix Central package identifier SqlGuard_12.0p233_FixPack for Guardium Data Protection 12.2. Check the current IBM bulletin and the corresponding IBM Fix Central entry to confirm that the package applies to your installation and to follow IBM’s installation instructions. IBM encourages customers to update promptly.

IBM lists “None” for workarounds and mitigations. Do not substitute an undocumented configuration change or assume that reducing reachability resolves the vulnerability; use IBM’s fix instructions for remediation.

Track the change and verify the outcome

As operational guidance, record the appliance, version, owner, reachability assessment, fix package or version applied, change time and post-change verification in your normal change-management process. Confirm the resulting patch state against IBM’s instructions and your organization’s records. This creates a clear basis for follow-up if an appliance was missed or the update did not complete as expected.

What is known about exploitation

CISA’s enrichment in the CVE record, dated September 22, 2026, listed exploitation as none, automatable as yes, and technical impact as total. That is a dated assessment, not confirmation of current threat activity. Check the CVE-2026-81657 record and IBM’s bulletin for updates; the available advisory information does not establish exploitation in your environment.
