A Costco employee who posts as Joce reportedly started at $14 an hour in 2018, treating the position as “just a summer job.” By 2025, she said she earned $37.90 an hour in optical work and $56.85 on Sundays. Those are figures from her personal account, relayed by Attack of the Fanboy; the article says they were not independently verified. They describe one worker’s reported experience, not a standard Costco wage.
What Joce says she earned
According to the account published by Attack of the Fanboy, Joce reported this progression:
| Year or pay circumstance | Reported hourly rate | What the report says |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | $14.00 | Her reported starting rate. |
| 2019 | $15.00 | Her reported rate the following year. |
| 2025, regular rate | $37.90 | The article describes this as a $31.90 base rate plus a premium. |
| Sundays | $56.85 | The article describes this as time-and-a-half on the reported $37.90 rate. |
The figures are attributed to Joce and were not independently verified, according to the article. The Sunday amount is a reported Sunday rate, not her ordinary hourly rate or evidence that every Costco employee receives the same premium. The article also notes that role, location, and premiums can affect pay.
How she moved into optical work
The article says Joce later moved into Costco’s optical department and became a licensed optician. She reportedly had no prior experience or training in the field. In a post quoted by the article, she said: “it’s all on the job training and they give you time to study while working.” The account describes Costco providing on-the-job learning and study time for exams; it does not establish that every location or employee follows the same arrangement.

The report identifies the ABO exam as part of her licensing path and gives a $225 fee, then describes the NCLE as a second exam. Those details come from Joce’s account as relayed in the article; they should not be treated as universal licensing requirements or current fees.

- Base rate and premiums: The account describes $31.90 as a base rate and $37.90 as a rate including a premium. A specialist role or location may change the comparison.
- Regular hours and Sunday hours: Joce’s reported $56.85 applies to Sundays in the article’s account, while $37.90 is her reported regular rate.
- Hourly pay and total compensation: Bonuses and benefits are separate from the hourly wage. Scheduled hours and any applicable premiums also affect pay.
Multiplying an hourly rate by a full-time schedule would produce only a hypothetical estimate, not Joce’s confirmed annual earnings. The article does not establish her actual hours or annual total.

Attack of the Fanboy also summarizes Reuters reporting based on an internal Costco memo: a $20 starting wage, a $30.20 top-of-scale hourly rate, and planned $1 increases in each of the next two years. This is a secondhand summary of Reuters’ account, not a company pay statement independently confirmed here. It is not directly comparable with Joce’s reported $37.90, which the article says includes a premium, or her Sunday rate.
