A Cheap Raspberry Pi Alternative Can Build a NAS—but the Board Is Only Half the Story

A cheaper single-board computer can anchor a DIY NAS, but the board alone does not determine whether the build is cheaper, compatible, or fast. The exact model, storage interface, drive power, networking, and the rest of the parts list matter. The available project details do not identify the rival SBC or document its price, transfer speeds, or the author’s build, so those first-person claims cannot be verified here.

What a small-board NAS needs

A network-attached storage system is a computer that makes its storage available over a network. At its simplest, it can be a small computer connected to an external USB drive and Ethernet. A multi-drive design needs a compatible storage interface, enough power for the drives, and a case or mounting arrangement that keeps the hardware secure and cool.

That is why a board’s purchase price is not a useful standalone comparison. A fair total includes the SBC and its memory, storage interface, drives, power supplies, cooling, enclosure, and any boot media the operating system requires.

External USB storage

USB storage is the straightforward route for a modest NAS: connect an external drive, configure the operating system and network sharing, and use Ethernet for the network link. Raspberry Pi’s official NAS tutorial uses a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB, Raspberry Pi OS Lite, Ethernet, external USB storage, and a powered USB hub. Raspberry Pi recommends a powered hub for consistent drive power and Ethernet for best performance in that setup. The tutorial also cautions that a microSD card is probably too small for NAS storage unless the files are very small. These are details of Raspberry Pi’s example, not evidence about the unidentified rival-board build. Raspberry Pi’s NAS tutorial

Before adapting any setup instructions that partition or format a drive, copy off data you need to keep: partitioning can erase the drive.

SATA expansion

For multiple SATA drives, Radxa’s Penta SATA HAT is documented for specific ROCK boards and Raspberry Pi 5; compatibility should not be assumed for another SBC. Radxa lists ROCK 2A/2F, ROCK 3A/3C, ROCK 4 variants, and ROCK 5A/5C. Its documentation describes high-speed PCIe on supported ROCK boards and up to five HDD or SSD connections: four SATA plus one eSATA. It also lists 12 V input, HDD suspend, an optional fan and OLED, and software RAID 0, 1, and 5. Radxa does not state a publication year on the documentation page. Check the board revision, HAT kit, cabling, operating system, kernel, power arrangement, and enclosure against the actual build before buying parts. Radxa Penta SATA HAT documentation

  • Big Upgrade: Boost your system to an amazing speed by upgrading memory card (SDR104: 104 MB/s max) to SSD (PCIe 2.0: 500 MB/s max) (The write speed of SSD is much faster than that of memory card) (Note: The max speed is declared by the Raspberry Pi documentation, usually unable to achieve)
  • Quad M.2 Slots: Install 1 to 4 SSDs, used as system disk, regular hard drive or bulid a NAS / RAID. Provide detailed tutorial for Raspberry Pi OS (The tutorial link can be found on the product box, no paper tutorial)
  • AI Accelerator: Compatible with M.2 Hailo AI accelerator module, so you can integrate high-performance AI (AI module operates only when installed alone and NOT with any SSD on quad-slot adapter)
  • Easy to Use: Just tighten the screws and connect the ribbon cable to install it on the top or bottom (Some SSDs may require connecting the power cable)
  • Compatible SSDs: M.2 NVMe SSDs, compatible with PCIe 2.0, size 2230 / 2242 / 2260 / 2280 (Note: NOT compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs) (This adapter can be shortened to be shorter than Raspberry Pi, but will not be able to install 2280 size)

Drive power is a design constraint

A drive can demand more current at startup than during ordinary operation. Radxa advises checking the peak current of large 3.5-inch drives and recommends less than 1.7 A for drives used with the Penta SATA HAT. That is Radxa’s product guidance, not a measurement of every drive or a guarantee that a given power supply is sufficient. Match the supply and wiring to the board and connected drives, and account for the board’s own power needs as well. Radxa Penta SATA HAT documentation

How to compare a Raspberry Pi with a rival SBC

Compare complete, working configurations rather than bare-board prices. Record the specific board and memory variant, the storage interface and drive count, and whether each quoted price includes drives, boot media, power, cooling, and a case. Then compare how each system connects to the network and which operating system and kernel the storage hardware supports.

  • Lighting System: The color and brightness of all the 5 ARGB fans and 12 case ARGB LEDs are controllable. Provide multiple dynamic (rainbow, breathing, flowing) and static (fixed color) lighting effects, supports custom programming (Python)
  • Cooling System: The speed of all the 4 case fans and 1 CPU fan with tower cooler is controllable. Provide multiple dynamic (CPU temperature control, case temperature control) and static (fixed speed) cooling modes, supports custom programming (Python)
  • Media System: Built-in 4.3 inch IPS touchscreen (800 x 480 pixel, 5-point capacitive touch), 0.96 inch OLED screen (128 x 64 pixel, single-color), stereo speakers, 3.5 mm audio output, dual standard HDMI outputs

Speed claims need a reproducible file-transfer test. Report the drive, filesystem, network link, test file sizes, software and settings, and whether the result is a read or write. No matched price comparison or head-to-head transfer benchmark is established for the unnamed build, so there is no defensible basis here to call one option cheaper overall or faster.

RAID is not a backup plan

The Penta SATA HAT documentation lists software RAID 0, 1, and 5 support, but that does not establish that an unidentified build uses RAID or explain its data-protection setup. RAID and backup solve different problems: a redundancy arrangement may help keep data available after a drive failure, depending on its configuration, but it does not by itself protect against accidental deletion, theft, or loss of the whole NAS. Describe the actual redundancy and independent backup arrangements separately; do not infer either from the number of drives.

What the project details still need to establish

To substantiate a specific “ditched the Pi” build story, the account needs the rival board and its RAM or storage variant, an as-built parts list with purchase date and region-specific prices, and the exact drive, power, enclosure, operating system, kernel, filesystem, and network link. Any cost or performance verdict depends on those details. Without them, the available evidence supports the design choices above, not a claim about what the author bought or experienced.

For context on another compact storage-oriented system, Zima describes ZimaBoard 2 as a “PCIe x4, Dual 2.5G & SATA” single-board server. That product listing does not identify the rival SBC in this build or provide a matched comparison with Raspberry Pi. ZimaBoard 2 product listing
