A 2026 study argues that migrant potters brought northern craft knowledge and material traditions south and made the pots in Tampa Bay. It offers a strong explanation for the evidence—not proof of who made every vessel or a final answer to every question.
What was the Florida pottery mystery?
For roughly a century, archaeologists have debated how pottery with northern Mississippian-style designs came to be found around Tampa Bay. Were finished pots traded south, were local potters copying northern designs, or did potters from the north move into the region and continue their craft there?

The question matters because Tampa Bay’s Safety Harbor communities had their own coastal history and economy. They relied on fishing and other marine resources. They shared some traits with Mississippian communities farther north, including platform mound-village complexes and iconography, but lacked other characteristic features such as maize agriculture and shell-tempered pottery. The Florida Museum account identifies Tocobaga as the area’s largest chiefdom and also names Mocoso, Pohoy and Uzita.
The new study focuses on pottery associated with Mississippian activity dated approximately A.D. 1000–1600. Its authors are C. Trevor Duke, Andrea Torvinen and Neill Wallis.

What did the researchers analyze?
Duke, Torvinen and Wallis examined pottery fragments using chemical and microscopic methods. The Florida Museum of Natural History reports that the team studied 58 plain and decorated fragments. Their article, “Secret Recipes: Potting Knowledge and Migration in Mississippian (ca. AD 1000–1600) Tampa Bay, Florida, USA,” appeared online in American Antiquity on September 18, 2026.
Chemistry pointed to local clay
Neutron activation analysis compared the pottery’s chemical composition with raw clay sources around Tampa Bay. The reported matching profiles indicate that the sampled vessels were made locally. That makes the idea that the decorated pots arrived as finished imports less likely, although the result applies to the analyzed sample rather than every decorated vessel from the region.

Thin sections revealed a different recipe
Petrographic analysis examines thin slices of pottery to identify minerals and other inclusions. The Florida Museum reports that grog—crushed pottery mixed into new clay—appeared in 80% of decorated samples and in none of the plain samples. The grog also contained mica, which is common in Florida’s Panhandle but is not typically found in peninsular Florida.

The museum account places the Tallahassee Hills about 200 miles from Tampa Bay. That is an approximate distance given by the account, not a measured route taken by any particular potter.

How do the findings distinguish trade, imitation and migration?
| Explanation | How it fits the evidence |
|---|---|
| Finished pots were traded south | The reported chemical matches between the sampled vessels and Tampa Bay-area clays weigh against this explanation for those vessels. |
| Local potters copied northern designs | Visual imitation could explain the designs, but the reported grog containing mica associated with the Panhandle, alongside differences in production, points to a connection involving more than appearance alone. |
| Migrant potters made vessels locally | This interpretation accommodates both the local clay chemistry and the northern-associated material and technical traditions identified in decorated pottery. |
The researchers also report a contrast in how vessels were made: plain pots were molded, while decorated pots were coiled. The decorated examples show more consistent clay mixtures and higher-quality clay, according to the museum account. Together with the grog findings, those differences support the authors’ interpretation that specialized knowledge was carried into Tampa Bay and used in local production.
What does “public secrecy” mean in the study?
The article’s abstract argues for a migrant-founded “community of practice” that safeguarded access to decorated-pottery production. In other words, the authors propose that making these vessels involved learned craft knowledge that was not equally available to everyone. They describe this social arrangement as “public secrecy.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The repeated reuse of decorated pottery may also have connected makers to ancestral materials and craft knowledge. Neill Wallis compares the sequence to “Russian nesting dolls” because grog in a pot could itself contain older pottery fragments, potentially linking several generations of vessels. These patterns can support an interpretation about how knowledge and materials were valued; they do not directly reveal a rule of secrecy or identify individual makers.

Does the study solve the mystery?
It gives archaeologists a supported explanation: migrant artisans likely made at least some Mississippian-style decorated pottery locally, using Tampa Bay clay and carrying northern-associated techniques or material traditions. That is more consistent with the combined chemical and petrographic evidence than either finished-pot imports or design imitation alone.

The conclusion remains an interpretation based on a sample, not a census of all Tampa Bay pottery. Material evidence cannot establish the identity or migration story of each potter, and the study does not show that all decorated pottery in the region came from migrants. The authors’ claim about restricted craft access and “public secrecy” is likewise an interpretation of production patterns and social organization, not something directly observed in the archaeological record.
