The identification and age estimate were reported by CRBC News, which says the tooth was found on September 14, 2026.
What did the camper find?
CRBC News reported that Kamloops camper Ron Storie picked up the dark object at Adams Lake and initially thought it might be a discarded flip-flop. On closer inspection, it looked like a dense block of teeth. The outlet quoted Storie describing the moment as a “holy s— moment” and calling it “a freaking block of teeth.”

The report says Royal BC Museum paleontology researcher Derek Larson identified it as a mastodon molar. That identification is attributed to the news report; no separate museum announcement or specimen record for the Adams Lake find was located.
Where and when was it found?
Storie, a camper from Kamloops, reportedly found the tooth at Adams Lake in British Columbia on September 14, 2026. CRBC News published its account on September 27, 2026.
How old is the mastodon tooth?
CRBC News attributed a preliminary age estimate of roughly 75,000 to 125,000 years to Larson. That is an estimate reported by the outlet, not a confirmed specimen-specific date or evidence that the tooth has been formally dated.
What is known about its weight and significance?
The news report puts the tooth’s weight at about 2.2 pounds and describes it as the third mastodon specimen documented in British Columbia. Both details come from CRBC News; neither was independently confirmed by a museum record or primary announcement located for this account.

What should you do if you find a fossil in British Columbia?
The Province of British Columbia asks people to report fossil discoveries to the BC Fossil Management Office, the Royal BC Museum, or a local museum. Its guidance says vertebrate fossil sites and unusual or rare specimens must be reported. Recreationally collected common fossils are for personal use and cannot be sold or removed from B.C. Rules can depend on the land’s jurisdiction, so check the relevant permissions before collecting anything. The province’s collection and use guidance was updated May 1, 2026.
