A standard 16:9 55-inch TV screen is about 47.94 inches wide and 26.96 inches tall. Those figures describe the screen, not the television’s full exterior. For a cabinet, stand, or wall installation, check the exact model’s outer dimensions and mounting details.
What does “55-inch TV” measure?
The 55-inch figure is the screen’s diagonal, measured from one corner of the active display to the opposite corner. It is not the screen’s horizontal width, and it does not include the bezel or the rest of the TV chassis. How wide and tall is a 55-inch screen?
For a 16:9 screen, width equals the diagonal multiplied by 16 and divided by √(16² + 9²); height equals the diagonal multiplied by 9 and divided by the same denominator. Using a 55-inch diagonal gives approximately:

- Screen width: 47.94 inches, or roughly 48 inches.
- Screen height: 26.96 inches, or roughly 27 inches.
These are geometric calculations for a 16:9 rectangle, not the outside dimensions of a particular TV model. The Panasonic 55-inch-class display specification, for example, lists the diagonal and 16:9 aspect ratio separately from bezel information.

Will a 55-inch TV fit your space?
Do not use the 47.94-inch screen width alone to decide whether a TV will fit. The bezel and chassis add to the exterior width, while the stand can affect the footprint and depth. Those measurements vary by model; the diagonal calculation cannot establish a TV’s feet spacing, stand dimensions, or wall-mount support.
- For a cabinet or console: Check the model’s listed outer width, height, and depth, then compare them with the usable space. If the TV will sit on its feet, also check the stand footprint or feet spacing.
- For a wall installation: Confirm the exact model’s mounting support and requirements in its current specification. Do not infer mount compatibility or required clearance from screen size.
- Before choosing between models: Compare each exact model using the same measurements: outer width, height and depth; stand footprint or feet spacing; and supported wall-mount details.
There is no universal exterior size or clearance established by the 55-inch label. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for the specific TV you are considering.
