Battery usage can point to unusually active apps; the Privacy dashboard can show recent permission access; Safe mode can narrow a phone-wide issue to downloaded apps. None of these clues alone proves an app is malicious or identifies it as the cause.
Start with the symptom, not a suspect
Before uninstalling anything, write down what is happening, when it started, how often it occurs, and what you were doing when it happened. Note recent app installations and updates, too. For intermittent freezes or crashes, several observations can reveal a pattern that one incident cannot. Google recommends keeping a list of apps that you force-stop during troubleshooting (Google’s Android troubleshooting guide).
Choose a diagnostic based on the problem: battery usage for suspected drain, the Privacy dashboard for unexpected permission activity, and Safe mode for a broad issue such as freezing or crashing. These tools answer different questions; a high battery row or permission grant is a clue to investigate, not a verdict.
Choose the diagnostic that fits

Check battery use if the battery drains quickly
On Pixel phones, Google documents this route: Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps. Select an app to review or change its background battery use. The exact screens and available details differ on other manufacturers’ phones and across software versions; consult the phone maker’s instructions if this path does not match your device (Google Pixel battery guidance).

Look for a pattern over the relevant period rather than treating the top-ranked app as guilty. An app used for navigation, video, calls, or other sustained activity may use more battery for a legitimate reason. Compare the usage period with when the drain began and with any recent install or update. Avoid force-stopping or uninstalling system components based on a chart: Google says Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled on Pixel guidance because it is integrated with Android.
Review camera, microphone, location, and other access
See recent access in the Privacy dashboard
Open the Privacy dashboard, choose the permission you are concerned about, and check which apps accessed it and when. Google documents a seven-day history on Android 13 and a 24-hour history on Android 12; the history window and interface depend on Android version (Google’s Privacy dashboard instructions).

Unexpected timing is a reason to investigate, not proof of misuse. An app may need a permission for a feature you used. Check whether the access lines up with your activity and the app’s purpose.
Review or change an app’s permissions
Google’s general path is Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions. To review access by category instead, open Permission manager. Names and menu locations can vary by device and Android release (Google’s Android permissions guide).

For supported location, camera, and microphone permissions, Android may offer choices such as “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow.” Choose the narrowest access that still supports the feature you need. Denying a permission can disable that feature, so check the effect before treating the resulting change as a new problem.
Use Safe mode to test whether downloaded apps are involved
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. Google explains that if the problem goes away there, an app is likely causing it; the test narrows the search but does not identify the app (Google’s Safe mode troubleshooting steps). The entry sequence varies by manufacturer, so use the instructions for your exact phone model rather than assuming one button combination works everywhere.

- Restart into Safe mode. Follow the phone manufacturer’s directions. Confirm that the device indicates Safe mode before testing.
- Try to reproduce the symptom. Use the phone in a way that would normally trigger the freeze, crash, or other issue. Safe mode is useful only if you can make a meaningful comparison.
- If the symptom disappears, return to normal mode. Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Restart and check whether the problem returns after each removal.
- Keep testing one change at a time. If removing an app appears to resolve the issue, observe the phone before reinstalling or changing other apps. Avoid removing several apps together, because that makes the result harder to interpret.
- If the symptom remains in Safe mode, move on. Google’s guidance is to skip the app-removal sequence and continue with other troubleshooting.
If Safe mode does not resolve the problem
A symptom that persists in Safe mode redirects the investigation away from the downloaded-app removal sequence; it does not prove every possible app or software interaction is irrelevant. Check device-wide causes and follow the phone maker’s guidance.
- Storage: Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat this as a general troubleshooting clue, not a universal threshold or evidence against a particular app (Google’s restart and crash troubleshooting guide).
- Updates: Check for Android and app updates using the device’s usual update screens, then see whether the symptom changes.
- Accessories: Disconnect accessories or remove a case or external battery where relevant to the symptom; Google includes accessory checks in general troubleshooting.
- Manufacturer support: Contact the phone maker if the issue continues or Safe mode instructions are unclear for your model.
A factory reset is a last resort: it removes data and installed apps. Google advises backing up the phone before resetting it (Google’s troubleshooting guidance).

Check security warnings without overreading them
Review the phone’s Security & privacy page and any Play Protect warning. Google notes that security settings are organized differently across Android versions and devices (Google’s Android security guidance). A warning merits attention, but the absence of one does not guarantee that every app is safe. Likewise, a battery spike or permission grant by itself is not evidence of malicious behavior.
For developers, Android vitals defines excessive background mobile network usage as 50 MB combined sent and received per day in the background. That figure is a developer-reporting definition, not a consumer cutoff for deciding whether an app is problematic (Android Developers’ Android vitals documentation).
