Pharos: A Static Binary Analysis Framework for Reverse Engineers

Pharos is a CMU SEI research framework for static analysis of binary programs, with tools for API patterns, function characterization and limited C++ structure recovery.

Pharos is a CMU Software Engineering Institute (SEI) research framework for automated static analysis of binary programs. Built on Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s ROSE infrastructure, it provides separate tools for tasks such as finding API-call patterns, characterizing functions, and recovering selected object-oriented structures. Its capabilities are specific rather than universal: notably, the repository documents OOAnalyzer support for 32-bit x86 executables compiled with Microsoft Visual C++, and describes the project as research software with incomplete documentation and untested portability.

What Pharos analyzes—and how

Pharos works with compiled binary programs rather than source code. It uses ROSE for foundational analysis, including disassembly, control-flow analysis, and instruction semantics. That foundation lets its tools reason about relationships in machine code, such as how calls are arranged or how data may flow through a program.

A 2020 SEI presentation depicts a broader historical component set, including a function partitioner, emulation framework, use-definition chains, XSB Prolog integration, variable-type analysis, an API parameter database, and call-parameter analysis. Treat that presentation as a snapshot of the framework at the time, not confirmation that every component remains supported in the current repository.

Which tools are included?

Tool Purpose Important qualification
ApiAnalyzer Searches for sequences of API calls with specified data and control relationships. One example is a file-opening, writing, and closing pattern—an operating-system interaction that may interest reverse engineers or malware analysts. Finds patterns of interest; a match is an analysis result, not proof of the program’s complete behavior.
OOAnalyzer Attempts to recover object-oriented constructs by tracking object pointers across functions and applying Prolog rules to recover object attributes. The repository documents support for 32-bit x86 executables compiled by Microsoft Visual C++. Do not assume that this scope extends to other architectures or compilers.
CallAnalyzer Reports statically analyzed parameters to API calls and demonstrates calling-convention, parameter-analysis, and type-detection capabilities. Its reports describe static analysis; they do not establish all values or effects that may occur at runtime.
FN2Yara Generates YARA signatures for functions. The repository presents function signatures as useful for binary similarity analysis and machine-learning features; it does not establish universal detection effectiveness.
FN2Hash Generates hashes and other descriptive properties of functions. These are function-characterization outputs, not a guarantee that similar binaries will always be identified.
DumpMASM Dumps disassembly listings. The repository says it has not been actively maintained and suggests considering ROSE’s standard recursiveDisassemble tool instead.

What static analysis can—and cannot—tell you

Static analysis examines code structure and relationships in a binary without, by itself, demonstrating what happens during a particular execution. Control-flow and data-flow analyses can help characterize possible paths, calls, and relationships, but their results should not be treated as proof of every runtime behavior, a guarantee of complete class recovery, or detection of every malicious action.

Use Pharos outputs as evidence to guide further investigation. A pattern match, inferred parameter, or recovered object structure can help a reverse engineer form and test hypotheses; the sources do not establish that Pharos replaces dynamic analysis or works equally well across all binaries.

Compatibility and project maturity

Compatibility depends on the particular tool and target, not just on whether a file is a binary. OOAnalyzer’s documented compiler and architecture constraints are especially important if your goal is C++ structure recovery. The project’s repository describes Pharos as research software, warns that documentation is incomplete, says only selected build configurations have been tested, and notes that source portability has not been actively tested. It also provides no warranty of fitness for a particular purpose.

Before adopting it, check the official repository for current installation guidance, supported configurations, and the state of the tool you intend to use. The package specification identifies version 20190807, but that historical package metadata does not establish the latest release. SEI’s project page and its 2017 release announcement provide background, not a substitute for checking the current repository.

The repository also says its former Ghidra plugin for importing OOAnalyzer output has been superseded for that functionality by the Kaiju Ghidra plugin. Check the current Kaiju project documentation if that integration is central to your workflow.

License and attribution

The package specification labels Pharos BSD-3-Clause, while the project license file describes the release as BSD (SEI), sets out redistribution conditions, and notes that third-party components have their own applicable terms. Review the project license and relevant dependency notices before redistributing or incorporating a build; do not assume the entire installation is governed by one unqualified license.

When Pharos may be a fit

  • Consider it if you need research-oriented tools for static binary analysis, especially API-pattern searches, function characterization, or the narrowly documented OOAnalyzer target.
  • Check carefully first if your target differs from OOAnalyzer’s supported architecture and compiler, or if a dependable, well-documented build is a hard requirement.
  • Use results with appropriate caution when making claims about runtime behavior or completeness; static findings can inform investigation but do not establish every possible execution.
