For a working component, use a capitalized function that returns JSX and export the root component when the sandbox expects one.
Render a React component in React’s online sandbox
-
Open React’s Installation guide and go to the “Try React” section.
-
Open the editable sandbox. React says you can edit it directly or fork it into a new tab; no local installation is required for this experiment.
-
Replace the example with a component such as:
export default function App() { return <h1>Hello, world</h1>; } -
Make edits to the component and inspect the browser preview. The sandbox exercise expects the root component to be exported; without that export, its preview setup will not work.

React components are JavaScript functions that return JSX, a syntax for describing markup within JavaScript. Component names must begin with a capital letter, which distinguishes them from built-in lowercase HTML tags. See Your First Component for the component basics.
Choose another online React editor if needed
React’s installation guide also names CodeSandbox, StackBlitz, and CodePen as online sandboxes that support React. You can also consider the Playcode React Playground; Playcode describes it as an online editor with live preview, hot reloading, npm packages, multiple files, and project sharing or deployment.
The available documentation establishes that these are options, but does not provide a like-for-like comparison of current pricing, account requirements, package support, collaboration features, or access limits. For a quick component experiment, start with React’s own sandbox. For a larger project, check the editor’s current documentation for the specific features and limits you need before choosing it.
Keep browser preview separate from server rendering
An online playground typically shows a client-rendered preview in the browser. That is different from rendering a React component to HTML on a server or generating static HTML. React documents these separately: react-dom/client APIs render in the browser, react-dom/server APIs render components to HTML on a server, and its static APIs generate static HTML. See the React Reference Overview.

If you only want to see how a component looks or behaves in a browser, the sandbox preview is the relevant path. If your goal is to produce HTML outside the browser, consult the server or static rendering APIs instead.

A sandbox is enough for trying a component; it does not require setting up a local project. If you move on to building a complete application, follow React’s current installation guidance for recommended approaches. React’s guide says Create React App is deprecated and points new projects toward recommended frameworks.
