If you’re new to programming and don’t have a specific technical goal yet, start with Python. Its compact syntax and quick feedback make it easier to focus on core ideas such as variables, loops, functions, and problem-solving. Choose C++ first if you already know you want to work on areas such as game engines, embedded systems, robotics, or performance-sensitive software. Either choice leaves the other open.
How to choose between Python and C++
Use the program you want to build as the tiebreaker, not a claim that one language is universally better. Python is a broad starting point for general programming, scripting, automation, rapid application development, data work, and back-end projects. C++ is a more direct route when your goal calls for systems-oriented or performance-sensitive work.
Python’s official tutorial describes it as “an easy to learn, powerful programming language,” but that does not mean its official tutorial is designed for people who have never programmed. The practical distinction is between a language that can be approachable for beginners and a particular course that assumes prior knowledge.
What learning each language feels like
Python: focus on the program first
Python uses compact syntax, dynamic typing, an interpreter, and high-level data structures. For many early exercises, that means less attention to setup and syntax and more to the behavior you are trying to express. The official tutorial describes Python as useful for scripting and rapid application development. Python.org also lists web and internet development, databases, desktop interfaces, scientific and numeric work, education, networking, and software development among its application areas.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
C++: learn the language alongside its toolchain
C++ is statically typed and commonly compiled to native machine code. In a typical beginner path, you may encounter compiler and build workflows, headers, references, object lifetimes, and memory management earlier than you would in a first Python project. That can be worthwhile when those concepts and the resulting control are part of your goal; it can also add overhead when you are still learning what a loop or function does. These are broad tendencies, not rules for every program or toolchain.
Which language fits your goal?
| Choose Python first when… | Choose C++ first when… |
|---|---|
| You want to learn general programming, automate tasks, write scripts, or build a quick application. | You have a specific aim in game-engine programming, embedded systems, robotics, or performance-sensitive systems work. |
| You want to explore areas including web development, databases, scientific computing, or networking; Python.org lists these among Python’s application areas. | You are prepared to learn a compiler and build workflow as part of learning to program. |
| You want fast iteration while getting comfortable with programming fundamentals. | You want early experience with a statically typed language and lower-level program concerns relevant to your target work. |
Performance alone is not a good reason to pick C++ without a defined workload. C++ is usually faster for comparable CPU-bound code, but the result depends on what the program does and how it is implemented. Python programs can also call optimized native libraries, so a Python application may rely on compiled components where they matter. There is no useful universal speed ratio to apply to every project.

A practical learning path
If you are completely new to programming
- Start with beginner-oriented lessons that teach general programming concepts, not only Python syntax.
- Run small programs often and practice changing them to see how the result changes.
- Build a simple project that interests you, such as a small utility or basic game, and use the experience to choose what to study next.
Python.org’s Beginner’s Guide distinguishes people who are new to programming from people who already have experience. The Python wiki says it is being archived, so check linked materials before relying on them for current setup instructions: Beginner’s Guide to Python.
If you already know another language
The official Python Tutorial is a useful language introduction if you already understand basic programming. It explicitly says: “This tutorial is designed for programmers that are new to the Python language, not beginners who are new to programming.” It covers language basics and points readers toward the standard library and formal language reference.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
If C++ is your target
Start with a concrete project reason, then expect to learn the compiler and build workflow alongside programming fundamentals. For a game engine, embedded device, robotics project, or performance-sensitive component, that additional learning can be directly relevant rather than a detour. The specific demands vary by project and toolchain.
If you are still torn
Build the same small project in either language, then ask what you want to do next: use Python’s broad ecosystem and quick iteration, or pursue C++’s control and target-specific requirements. This is a practical way to test your interest, not a guarantee that one language will feel easy or produce a particular performance result.

Does learning one make the other unnecessary?
No. The programming fundamentals you learn in one language—such as variables, control flow, functions, and decomposition—can help when you study another, even though syntax and tools differ. You can also combine them: Python’s official documentation explains that its interpreter can be extended with functions and types implemented in C or C++, while a project may use Python for higher-level logic and C++ for performance-sensitive components.
Where to learn next
- Python.org’s Beginner’s Guide points first-time programmers toward beginner-specific instruction and simple interpreter experiments. As the wiki notes that it is being archived, verify linked learning and setup materials before following them.
- The official Python Tutorial is better suited to readers who already know basic programming.
- Python.org’s About Python page describes Python’s application areas and ecosystem, including the Python Package Index.
A book can be a useful optional companion if you prefer a structured print resource, but it is not required; start with free beginner-oriented instruction and practice.
