A small, customizable 3D-printed label can make it easier to tell what your USB-C cables are capable of—but only after you identify each cable. USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed charging speed or data rate. A tag records what you have learned; it does not test, certify, or change the cable.
Why USB-C cables are hard to tell apart
Two cables with the same USB-C connectors can differ in both charging capability and data performance. Those are separate properties: knowing a cable’s data rate does not tell you its power capability, and a power rating does not establish its data rate. USB-IF describes Type-C as a reversible connector supporting scalable power and performance; the connector shape alone is not a complete specification (USB-IF’s Type-C specification page).
That makes a label useful as a personal filing system. It can help you pick the right cable later, but it is only as accurate as the information you put on it.
Identify the cable before labeling it
Check the cable’s packaging, your order history, or the manufacturer’s specifications for a cable supplied with a device. If those sources do not identify it, Tim Brookes’s How-To Geek article suggests inspection tools including USB Device Tree Viewer for Windows, WhatCable for Mac, and usbeehive for Linux. Those tools are suggestions from that article, not independently tested recommendations here.

Before marking a cable, establish its data rate and power capability separately. Also check that its connectors suit the devices and that its capabilities meet what those devices require. If you cannot verify a property, leave it off the tag rather than guessing.
Choose a label scheme you can read at a glance
Brookes describes a reusable 3D-printed label model with editable text. You can write the relevant data and power information on the label, use color to distinguish one property, or make another consistent key. The model is not limited to USB-specific wording: its text can be customized for your own cables.

In Brookes’s personal example scheme, colors indicate data-rate categories:

These are the article’s example labels and figures, not a USB-IF color standard or a complete map for every cable. If you adopt colors, define them somewhere you can refer back to, and include text so the label remains meaningful without relying on color alone.

Keep power markings distinct from data markings
USB-IF compliance guidance specifies 60W or 240W power-capability labels for applicable USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories. These official power markings communicate power capability, not the cable’s full data performance. Keep them separate from a personal color key, and do not treat a custom color as an official rating. The USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification landing page lists Release 2.5, dated April 8, 2026; consult the applicable specification and guidance for details (USB-IF Release 2.5; USB-IF cables and connectors compliance guidance).

A printer is optional. Handwritten notes or tape can do the same basic job if they stay legible and attached. A 3D-printed tag offers a reusable, customizable format for people with printer access; the source article suggests batch-printing labels to reduce filament waste, but does not specify a printer, filament type, or tested durability.

Brookes sums up the workflow: “Once you’ve tested a cable, print a label and file it away.” In practice, that means first verifying the cable’s known capabilities, then recording only those facts in a scheme you will understand later.
