Apple’s current specifications list up to two external displays for M5 and M4/M4 Pro models, three for M5 Pro, and four for M5 Max and M4 Max. Older models have different limits, so check the specifications for your exact Mac before choosing displays or a dock.
How many monitors can your MacBook Pro support?
Apple’s external-display compatibility guide lists supported configurations by chip and model. The figures below are maximum external-display counts, not a promise that every screen can run at its highest advertised resolution and refresh rate at the same time. Apple specifies separate combinations for each Mac.
| MacBook Pro chip | Maximum external displays | Configuration details |
|---|---|---|
| M5 | Two | Two displays can each run at up to 6K/60 Hz or 4K/144 Hz. With one external display, Apple lists up to 8K/60 Hz, 5K/120 Hz, or 4K/240 Hz. The 14-inch M5 model can use its built-in display at the same time (Apple technical specifications). |
| M5 Pro | Three | Three displays can each reach up to 6K/60 Hz or 4K/144 Hz; other display counts have their own limits. |
| M5 Max | Four | Apple lists up to four displays at 6K/60 Hz or 4K/144 Hz; supported combinations vary with display count and settings. |
| M4 or M4 Pro | Two | Listed two-display configurations include up to 6K/60 Hz or 4K/144 Hz per display. A single external display may support higher listed modes. |
| M4 Max | Four | Limits vary by the number of displays and their resolution and refresh settings. |
| M3 (base chip) | Two, with the lid closed | Apple lists one Thunderbolt display up to 6K/60 Hz plus either a Thunderbolt display up to 5K/60 Hz or an HDMI display up to 4K/100 Hz. |
| M2 Pro or M3 Pro | Two | Listed combinations include two Thunderbolt displays up to 6K/60 Hz, or one Thunderbolt display up to 6K/60 Hz and one HDMI display up to 4K/144 Hz. |
| M2 Max or M3 Max | Four | Resolution and refresh-rate combinations depend on the specific model and display setup. |
| Older Intel or other Apple silicon models | Check the exact model | Apple directs owners to the technical specifications for the individual Mac; the family name alone does not establish its display limit. |
Chip names within one generation are not interchangeable: M5 supports up to two external screens, M5 Pro up to three, and M5 Max up to four under Apple’s listed configurations. For M4 and M5 models, closing the lid does not raise the listed external-display maximum. The base M3 is a specific exception: Apple lists its two-screen configuration with the lid closed.
What to check before connecting two screens
- Exact Mac model and chip: Find the model and chip in About This Mac, then match them to Apple’s compatibility guide or the Mac’s technical specifications.
- Both displays’ resolution and refresh rate: Check the supported two-display combination for your Mac. A single-screen maximum may not apply when a second screen is connected.
- Available video ports: MacBook Pro video connections include Thunderbolt and, on models equipped with it, HDMI. HDMI availability depends on model year and size. Apple lists HDMI on 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, and on 13- and 15-inch models from 2012–2015 (Apple’s port guide).
- Display inputs and cables: Match each monitor’s input to a Mac port. If the connectors differ, Apple says a suitable adapter may be used; check the display maker’s documentation for compatibility.
- Dock or hub support: Confirm that the specific configuration supports the screens you want. A hub or daisy-chain can route multiple screens through one Thunderbolt port in supported setups, but it does not increase the Mac’s total display limit.
How to connect and arrange two external displays
- Confirm the Mac’s display limit. Identify its exact chip and model, then check Apple’s supported external-display configurations.
- Verify the pair of screens. Compare each display’s resolution and refresh rate against the two-display configuration for that Mac—not just the one-display maximum.
- Choose ports and cables. Use the Mac’s available Thunderbolt or HDMI video ports and suitable display cables. If a connector does not match, use a compatible adapter and verify the display maker’s requirements.
- Connect the highest-resolution display first. Apple recommends this when setting up multiple displays.
- Set the desktop arrangement. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays to arrange the screens and choose whether to extend or mirror the desktop, following Apple’s connection instructions.
- Check one-port setups separately. If you want both monitors connected through one Thunderbolt port, verify that the Mac, dock or daisy-chain method, and displays support that exact arrangement. Routing through one port does not change the Mac’s maximum screen count.
Does closing the MacBook Pro lid change dual-monitor support?
It can affect how you use the built-in screen, but it does not generally add external-display capacity. Apple’s configurations list no increase in the external-display maximum when the lid is closed for M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max, M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max MacBook Pro models. The base M3 configuration is specifically listed for two external displays with the lid closed. In every case, follow the display limit for the exact chip and model.

Do you need a dock for two monitors?
Not necessarily. If your Mac has suitable video ports for both monitors and the supported resolution-and-refresh combination, you can connect them directly. A dock or hub is useful when you need to route displays through one port or consolidate peripherals, but it must support the required display configuration. It cannot make a Mac drive more screens than Apple specifies.
Before buying an accessory, check the Mac’s chip and model, the number of external screens, each screen’s native resolution and refresh rate, the monitors’ input connectors, and whether the proposed one-port arrangement is supported. Do not assume that any USB-C hub will provide two extended displays.
