Linux Mint 22.3: Who Should Avoid It, and Why?

Linux Mint 22.3 is supported until 2029, but kernel and driver combinations, proprietary graphics setup, and software-source defaults may not suit every workflow.

Linux Mint is not a poor choice for everyone, but specific hardware, driver, software-source, or workflow needs can make it a frustrating fit. The project’s current release, Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena,” is an LTS release supported until 2029; whether it works well for you depends more on your actual devices and applications than on its modest minimum requirements.

The headline’s claim of a year spent using Mint and a personal decision to leave cannot be verified from the available evidence. The concrete concerns below are documented trade-offs and one user’s account—not proof that Mint is broadly unsuitable.

What Linux Mint 22.3 offers—and what that does not tell you

Linux Mint announced version 22.3 “Zena” on January 13, 2026, and says the release is supported until 2029. Its published requirements are 2 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended for comfortable use), 20 GB of disk space (100 GB recommended), and a 1024×768 screen resolution. These are project-stated requirements, not a guarantee of performance on every system. Linux Mint 22.3 release announcement.

Mint describes itself as a free Linux-based operating system for desktop and laptop computers. Its FAQ says LTS releases receive five years of support. Those facts make Mint a plausible long-term desktop option, but they cannot establish whether a particular peripheral, application, or work routine will behave as you need. Linux Mint FAQ.

When a kernel or driver mismatch can matter

Hardware compatibility can depend on the Mint point release, kernel, graphics card, and driver branch—not just on the Mint name. Mint’s release notes say versions 22.2 and 22.3 use the HWE 6.14 kernel to support newer AMD processors, while also noting issues with VirtualBox and older NVIDIA cards that depend on driver 470. For affected setups, Mint recommends trying version 22.1, which uses the LTS 6.8 kernel. The project also cautions that newer kernels can broaden hardware support while introducing regressions. Linux Mint 22 release notes.

This is a specific compatibility caveat, not evidence that Mint cannot run NVIDIA graphics or that it is incompatible with modern computers. If VirtualBox or a driver-470-dependent card is essential to your setup, check the release notes and test the relevant combination before committing to an installation.

Proprietary graphics drivers are a setup choice

Mint says proprietary graphics drivers are not installed by default, though they are easy to install. That means some users may need an additional setup step; it does not establish that driver installation is difficult for everyone. Linux Mint FAQ.

If your current graphics setup depends on a proprietary driver, identify the card and required driver branch before switching. The practical question is whether the driver your hardware needs is available and works with the kernel and Mint release you plan to use—not whether Mint includes every proprietary driver out of the box.

Mint’s software base favors selected forms of compatibility

Mint 22 is based on Ubuntu 24.04. The original Mint 22 release used kernel 6.8, while later 22.x releases use HWE kernels. Mint’s release materials describe decisions intended to preserve support for selected applications and desktop theming while adapting to upstream changes. Those choices reflect a balance; they do not, on their own, show that Mint is generally outdated. Linux Mint 22 release notes.

That balance may not suit someone whose priority is a different update cadence or a specific newer component. Judge the actual application and device requirements you rely on rather than treating the Ubuntu base as a complete measure of Mint’s freshness.

Unverified Flatpaks require an extra trust decision

Mint 22 disables unverified Flatpaks by default. If you enable them, Mint’s Software Manager marks those apps as unverified and does not show reviews or scores for them. The project presents this as a trust and safety measure. It can mean extra friction if an application you want is distributed that way, but it is not a claim that every Flatpak is unsafe. Linux Mint 22 release notes.

If your usual software is available through a source you are comfortable using, this default may be immaterial. If you depend on a particular unverified Flatpak, account for the additional choice and the missing in-app review information.

Individual troubleshooting stories are not failure-rate data

In a December 2025 r/linuxmint discussion, one user said they had spent roughly three weeks troubleshooting after switching to Mint 22.2, citing a Logitech mouse battery problem and Bluetooth connection and log issues. The user wrote, “I am actively considering switching back.” This is one person’s report: it does not establish that Mint caused the problems or how often other users encounter them. r/linuxmint discussion.

Use reports like this to identify questions worth checking on your own setup, especially if you rely on the same peripheral or Bluetooth functions. They are not a substitute for testing your exact device, and they do not show that the same issue will occur on your computer.

How to decide whether Mint is a bad fit for your setup

  • Check exact compatibility: Match your graphics card, driver branch, virtualization software, and essential peripherals against the release and kernel you intend to install.
  • List must-have applications: Confirm that your work tools are available in a suitable version and through a software source you are willing to use.
  • Consider update and trust preferences: Decide whether Mint’s balance of upstream changes and its default handling of unverified Flatpaks fits how you manage software.
  • Be honest about troubleshooting tolerance: A setup that needs a driver or kernel workaround may be acceptable to a tinkerer and a poor fit for someone who needs every component to work without intervention.
  • Try before replacing a working system: Test Mint with the hardware and applications that matter to you. For an installation image, use Mint’s official download and verification guidance; the project warns that fake ISO images can be produced and says users are responsible for checking they have official ones.
